black metal

Just been dusting off the collection: good stuff!!

What are the MUST HAVE black metal albums, those more knowledgeable than myself? My favourites (that i own) are:

* Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia

* Satyricon - Volcano

* Cradle of Filth - Cruelty & The Beats / Midian

* Thorns - S/T

* Emperor - Equilibrium / Prometheus

* Zyklon - World Ov Worms

* Mayhem - Chimera

WHAT NEXT?!?

  • Beast*

    • Venom

      'Black Metal' obviously...

The first two Dissection albums are pretty rockin'.

'Scream Bloody Gore' by Death is also amazing.

      • death aren't

really black metal so to speak

        get Satyricon- Nemesis Devina

        • ^ Agreed

But it's such a belter, I never get tired of recommending it!

  • Arcturus!

I'd recommend La Masquerade Infernale - preposterous, operatic left-of-centre black metal pomposity

  • The new Nachtmystium album is good

    Get that...

    • Agreed

I was actually surprised at how good this record was

  • get some classics...

    Darkthrone- Under A Funeral Moon
    Burzum- Filosofem
Carpathian Forest- Through Chasm, Caves and Titan Woods
Ulver- Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitler

^^ All amazing, and, with the case of the Ulver and Burzum albums, some of the best of any genre.

    Some weirder stuff...

Abruptum- Casus Luciferi (basically a dark ambient album, but it's amazing)
Krieg- The Black House (it has a cover of 'Venus in Furs'!)
    Krohm- The Haunting Presence
    Lurker of Chalice- s/t
Make a Change... Kill Yourself- s/t (amazing Danish suicidel BM)
Nattefrost- Blood and Vomit (incredibly brutal BM with a lot of humour, from one of the Carpathian Forest guys)
    Nachtmystium- Instinct: Decay

ALSO: Wolves in The Throne Room, Striborg, Alcest and Xasthur are well worth your time and money.

Black metal is an amazing genre, enjoy!

    • Burzum

      no?

      • no?

he's an awful person but considering i've never paid for any of his albums i've got no reason to feel guilty about enjoying them.

Wagner was an awful person too, should people feel bad about enjoying his music?

        • burzums music

isnt so good, but the burzum story is black metal to the core,
if youre gonna go for anything by him, go for 'Filosofem' mainly cos of the song 'dunkelheit'

          go gorgoroth!
probly my favourite album of theirs is 'ad majorem sathanas gloriam'
          or
try the jotunspor album, 'gelipnirs smeder',
          a gorgoroth member/ex member alubm,

          • yah

'Filosofem' is actually his only good album, but it's amazingly good. 'Dunkelheit' is an incredible piece of music, yeah, but the song after it 'Jesus' Dod' (basically 'the death of Jesus') is the most intense thing EVER. It IS black metal. Fast, raw, ugly but at the same time beautiful, and full of atmosphere.

    • i've been digging Xastur recently

      • I think

Xsathur is mostly excellent - he really does know how to produce the darkest, most emotionally affecting sounds with the most minimal set up...the horrible, scabby production compliments his composition styke so well: I'd recommend the Xsathur/Leviathan split out of all of his records.

  • Hmmm

Teen Cthulhu: Old school Hardcore with a huge black metal influence; their album's OoP, but easy to, ahem, acquire.

Book of Black Earth: Ballsy Black/Death, with an excellent sense of melody.

Agalloch: I'm surprised these guys haven't been mentioned on here before - epic black metal, with plenty of post-rock atmospherics. Check out 'Limbs' on their myspace.

Solefald: Avant-garde BM, with a sprinkling of folk and viking. Kinda sound like Patton fronting Arcturus.

    www.myspace.com/solefaldofficial

Leviathan: Lovecraftian Doom 'n' gloom from america's finest. Along the lines of Xasthur, but, in my opinion, far far superior.

Enslaved: Raw BM that dabbles in prog and psychedelia. Norway's finest, without a doubt.

    http://www.myspace.com/enslaved

Anaal Nathrakh: Britain's premier exponents of all that is grim.

    • Also on a UK tip...

I'm possibly the only person who genuinely loves Hecate Enthroned, but Medulla, if you like early-mid CoF you should check them out.

Also early Akercocke (the later stuff is poor) - not black as such but suitably grimmmm and with large bm influence.

  • GORGOROTH!

and lots more mayhem. also, immortal are good, they just look stupid

  • thanks everyone =)=)

Found me some bargains by coincidence yesterday in Virgin:

Dimmu Borgir: Spiritual... / Enthrone Darkness...
    Satyricon - Now, Diabolical

Now i'm off to scout amazon for some of these recommendations

  • Lads from Manchester...

Bisonhammer are supporting Gutworm in a few weeks.

    Check em out. www.myspace.com/bisonhammer

    • i was told about a polish guy

      called

      IGOR

      possibly spelt EYEGORE

or some variation on this, by a big metal fan. i haven't been able to find anything though... anyone know the right name/can help me in my search? google's useless, true knowledge will win the day.
