Fucking awesome weekend. Saw some great bands and a few comedians, plus a couple of Ross Noble's 50 sets. Clear musical highlights for me were YACHT, Slow Club and Sigur Ros, which was one of the greatest things I've ever seen. It was too good when the marching band came on during Hufupukar.

Non musical highlights included Rich Hall in the comedy tent, Robin Ince's Book Club + Ross Noble on Thursday night (shame I couldn't see Ross' proper set but the tent was far far far too small) and Pappy's Fun Club who were shambolic as fuck but so funny.

  • Rich Hall..

... was great, best comedy act I saw on the weekend

    • He's really great ain't he.

I think I'm gonna get tickets for him in Norwich in December.

      • did you see otis lee crenshaw too?

        (hall's alter ego)

he had audience leaving that set as in his own. as usual, they got accosted by by crenshaw/hall when they left. the first one who tried to escape, when asked what their name was simply replied "dan"

        • Hahaha

          Genius.

        • Dan was at our campsite last night

He's like a Welsh version of Jesus.

          Rich Hall was immense.

          • oh yeah!

I tried to teach myself contact juggling with his MASSIVE BALL.

          • he ended up at ours as well

            nicest guy EVER. maybe.

  • I queued for tea behind Warren Ellis and Seasick Steve!

This may be a highlight of my life to date...

    • Really?

That's pretty fucking cool. Did they have some kind of beard off? Is it true Seasick Steve made racist comments during his set?

      • Didn't see his set so I don't know.

It was definitely the beardiest situation I've encountered though.

        • i saw him

          he didnt. no racism there.

he was ace, one of my weekend highlights i think.

      • Where did you hear

        that from?

    • I queued for a veggie burger

      behind Marcus Brigstocke!

  • was fun

rich hall and frankie boyle were fantastic, as were elbow, sigur ros, murder by death, blondie, grammatics and exploits of elaine. plus one of the irrepresebles songs was the most beautiful piece of music ive ever heard.
didnt make the DiS meet, passed out around 5:30pm on Friday and when i awoke it was 12:15 and raining. wonion.

  • Sigur ros.

    That was WOW.

The marching band coming on, the whole of hoppipolla, and the explosions of confetti during gobbledigook are things I will never forget. Truly stunning.

Pretty much everything musical on Sunday seemed pointless after that....except Blondie's fantastic performance (ignoring Debbie Harry's attempt at dancing)

    • Yes Yes Yes!

The marching band coming on in Hufupukar is the defining moment of that festival for me.

      • brass band

i thought they entered during the end of Se Lest?

        • Pretty sure it was Hufupukar.

          • Oh how hilarious!

It turns out that they are both the same song!

            • hahahaah

i was going to say i had no idea what hufapukar was!

    • I thought

the dancing was just alzheimers kicking in ^_^

Best festival/weekend of my life so far

      x

  • I was watching the twilight sad (who ruled)

while leaning against the fence at the side of the main stage and then seasick steve wandered out of nowhere and sat down against the fence about 10 feet away from me. I would have said something to him but i've already met the guy before and he looked pretty tired. He still had quite a few people go and say hello to him though.

Rich Hall was the only comedy act I bothered to see because that tent is stupidly still far too small (what happened to them apparently making it bigger this year) and he was funny as hell. That whole audience love arc thing he had going on was great.

Sigur Ros, Okkervil River, Interpol, Broken Records, Slow Club - all pretty amazing

    • oh another thing

I kept overhearing people talking about how great Joanna Newsom was but she kept forgetting the words which I thought was kinda rubbish. I guess i'm prejudiced though since I don't get what makes Ys so great.

      • i slept through joanna newsom

woke up at half 1 and could've punched myself in the face for such negligence.

        • Moron

By far the best thing all weekend - new songs were amazing too

  • interpol set

    anyone?

    • Off the top of my head

      Pioneer
      Slow Hands
      PDA
      NARC
      C'Mere
      No I In Threesome
      The Lighthouse
      Not Even Jail
      Mammoth
      Rest My Chemistry
      Obstacle 1
      Evil
      Roland
      ---
      NYC
      Heinrich
      Stella

So basically, by a long way the best thing to ever happen ever. The rain during Roland made it.

      • bah

they pretty much played everything except the encore at the T in the Park last week.

actually crying about missing NYC and Stella at a festival 20 minutes from my house but people fucked me over so I couldn;t go.

  • that was awesome...

    i'm so tired now...

    highlights:

    ross sutherland (poet)
    Arnab Chanda (comedian)
    disco shed
    the aliens
    yacht
    thomas tantrum
    breeders
    black lips
    okkervil river
    interpol

    annoyances:

    kids during volta. fucking idiots.
    tellier's v.short set.

    best thing ever:

jack getting yannis to do a shout out for me during foals. fucking awesome.

  • i thought black lips were amazing, even though my fucking useless phone wouldnt let me get my pictur

Okkervil river were also very good.
Glasvegas were very disappointing and seemed totally tuneless.
Beggars were brilliant and they are probably the sexiest band ever.

    • Glad

I didn't waste my time seeing Glasvegas, they're just so uninspiring

  • who got to see

the irrepresibles? 'In This Shirt' was the highlight of my festival, and maybe any festival ever. walking past at random to see them playing on the lake, i nearly teared up. the recorded version doesnt really do it justice, but still:
    http://www.myspace.com/theirrepressibles

    • Yes

      They were great, really beautiful.

    • Saw them

twice, no less :] How right you are!

    • saw them in the woods

and by the lake. great both times.

  • SUPER HIGHLIGHTS

    Sigur Ros
    Rich Hall / Otis Crenshaw
    Blondie
    Errors
    Howling Bells
    Elbow
    Disco Shed
    Joanna Newsom
    Lykke Li
    Tim & Sam

Pretty awesome all round. Met some lovely people and had a grand time.

  • was it just me...

or did TMV not play a single track from their first LP? WTF?

    • you fucking idiot

so what? Where's the law that says they should? They're on the verge of their 5th album, not surprising they don't play earlier stuff. People who make comments like this fuck me off so much.

Actually though, they do usually play drunkship of lanterns at the end but the set was about an hour less than they usually have. (and it was fucking amazing)

      • so what?

It's one of my favourite albums of all time. I saw them play it back-to-back at the Electric Ballroom, one of the four times I saw them in a year.

I was demanding that they played anything, I just thought it was strange, for a headlining band not to play a SINGLE song from their first record. Especially as it's regarded their greatest achievent.

        Apology accepted you fucking cunt.

        • what apology?

people who make complaints like you just did are morons, full stop. Its one of my favourites ever too, but they have made alot of music since then.

          • Well,

The Mars Volta are shit and you're both wrong. Now both of you can be happy :]

          • Why am I a moron for pointing out..

..something I was a little dissapointed by. I really enjoyed the set. If you read my other post, it was in my highlights of my festival.

I was just pointing out a FACT about the set. In actualy fact, I didn't even pass judgement, or complain.

Get off your high horse you fool. You must be such a prick if you react like that to a simple statement about a bands set.

  • that was so much fun

Sigur Ros were definitely my highlight. I'd never heard them before, they were on after Elbow so I thought I'd just hang around and listen for a few songs but my friend and I were transfixed. Can anyone tell me what the first song was? Loved it. The whole thing was just magical, and the confetti at the end, the marching band...awesome.

Blondie were awesome, nice to see Okkervil River and Elbow, and I thought Nada Surf were great - maybe not the most exciting, original musical highlight but I thought it was just good, unpretentious, enjoyable music played by some pretty nice guys. And they played Inside Of Love, which was pretty ace.

Franz Ferdinand were pretty meh, the friend I was with is a huge fan so we went, but I found them really pretty unexciting. I heard lots of people after saying they weren't impressed either.

I found quite a lot of the smaller bands kind of disappointing. I know there were some great ones, but there just seemed to be such a multitude of cut-copy indie twee cutesy boy-girl duos and the like...didn't do a lot for me.

Non-musical: LUKE WRIGHT. Every morning in the poetry tent. I was absolutely blown away. He was...incredible, really, such amazing poetry and performance. Usually I hate hearing people read their own poetry aloud, but he was something else. Anyone else catch him?

Tim Minchin was the comedy highlight, the ginger song was fantastic. Bill Bailey was a bit shite though.

    Great weekend generally :D

    • oh also: new york fund

      seemed pretty cool.

      • AND AND

"Transatlanticism" at the end of Death Cab's set. Ben Gibbard seemed plagued with sound problems which (fair enough) seemed to piss him off quite a bit, but by the end...what a gorgeous way to close.

    • first song=

svefn g englar, from the album agaetis byrjun.
Nada Surfs setlist was INCREDIBLE. i thought it would be all new stuff

      • did no one watch Grinderman?

        fucking awesome

        great weekend

        • oh man yeah

I was only there so I could get near the front for Sigur Ros (mission: SUCCESSFUL!) but they totally ruled. Nick Cave is ace, i'm going to have to check out their album.

          • Grinderman

weren't on before Sigur Ros. They weren't even on the same day; Elbow played directly before Sigur Ros!

            • ok interpol then

that mission to get to the front was also succesful

I was bored out of my mind waiting through Elbow. The lead singer reminds me of a darts player

              • Ricky Gervais

with a Mancunian accent. Not a fan of them on record but enjoyed them nuchly here.
Also surprised not to see any love here for Gravenhurst, Murder By Death, Glasvegas and Those Dancing Days, who all played quite immense sets, as did the Twilight Sad on the main stage yesterday.

                • muchly

                • Was looking forward to Gravenhurst

but was disappointed that he wasn't with a band.

                • thats probably because

murder by death and glasvegas sucked

              • We thought he was a bit Johnny Vegas

          • Lucky

            man :]

I swear I was just surrounded by children and middle aged people insistant on talking about their jobs "back in real life"... SIGUR made me cry though... the marching band seems to be everyone's favourite Latitude moment :]

      • damn you!

did nada surf play stuff off let go? paper boats? that may have reduced me to tears if id been there

    • re sigur ros

      setlist found on their messageboard:

      Svefn-g-englar
      Glosoli
      Se Lest
      Vid Spilum Endalaust
      Hoppipolla
      Med Blodnasir
      Festival
      Saeglopur
      Inní mér syngur vitleysingur
      Hafsol
      Gobbledigook
      ----
      Popplagio

      AMAZING basically.

joanna newsom, elbow and johnny foreigner all fantastic too.

    • yeah

luke wright's amazing. Did you see him do that Camping Dad poem? Cracks me up every time.

      • hah, yeah

that was brilliant. All of his stuff was just absolutely ace.

  • just got back

So much fun, easily one of the best UK festival.

    Highlights for me were:

    Interpol
    Blondie
    Johnny Flynn
    White Lies

  • Amongst other highlights, one of them for me was seeing

Paul Hawkins walking up the main stage field, whilst chatting to Alex in ciderland (dis namedropping), and then catching Pauls set at the Lake Stage.

    • heh!

Wish Stewart Lee hadn't been running late so I could've seen more. Singing from within the audience is always a nice touch I think!

      • Hai,

It was damn funny wasn't it!

        Had a great time.

What time did you get back then?

        • well

some total fuck packet strolled over my tent at about 5 in the morning which knackered it up real good. I left site shortly after and got home about 9 I guess. I love driving when I'm sleep deprived.

But I had such a good time. Excellent festival.

          • There were a few dickheads there.

We spent 2 hours queueing up for the coach next to four of them. Seriously the most annoying bunch of subhuman scum I have ever layed eyes on.

            Sorry you had trouble dude!

            Twas a great festival though.

            • Certainly were

Since when did Interpol attract a "lads" folowing? They did at Latitude. Same with Franz Ferdinand, although maybe that's to be expected...

    • What a great festival that was!

Highlights for me (though i didnt see many bands) were Sigur Ros, Elbow, Deatch Cab, Interpol and the cider house and the woods. Low points were The Breeders who were just fucking awful!

Really great festival atmosphere I thought. No one shouting "bollocks" and everyone ws just amazingly friendly, which is the way it should be.

      • I heard a bit of bollocks chanting

Not good enough. I was going to find whoever was doing it and ram a tent peg down their throats but I couldn't be bothered getting up.

        • Really?

Perhaps they were shouting it just to be ironic. In a way of trying to point out how different it is from Reading Festival or something.

Nah, perhaps not. Ah well, it was certainly not as prevelant than at other places and in comparison to other festivals it was very good value for money with great attention to detail.

      • Breeders? Awful?

Sure you were watching the right band?

        • It was just dirge!

Really really dull stuff, to my ears anyway.

        • I'm not a massive Breeders fan, but I did

          enjoy the set.

          • Same here

I thought they were quite playful and fun.

            • Yeah, I enjoyed it. I was surprised, I thought they would annoy me

but I found myself singing along to a couple of numers from the last splash. Even Cannonball!

    • It was a pleasure seeing all of you guys too!

We only found out we were playing on Thursday and didn't really get a chance to tell anyone before everyone had already gone to the festival so it was a relief to see some friendly faces in the audience!

      • I really enjoyed your set

I was at the front in a monkey hat, sunglasses and a green hood. I got some footage on my camera too.

    • alex in ciderland

was probably the most fmaous person I saw

  • Foals were awful

but not as awful as their fans. Getting stuck near the front for that was a terrifying experience.

  • My top five:

    1. Interpol [by a clear margin; it was the best I've ever seen them, the setlist was near-perfect and the crowd were very enthusiastic without ever becoming aggressive. Excellent.]
    2. Sigur Ros
    3. Grinderman
    4. Seasick Steve
    5. Wild Beasts

    • Agree on Interpol

Adored every second of their set, was fun being part of the pogoing crowd for the first few songs but then loved drawing back slightly and having a perfect view for songs like NYC. I really enjoyed Grinderman and Seasick Steve too but Mars Volta, Okkervil River, Truckers of Husk and Slow Club would all be in my top 5 before them. Ultimately lots of good music, some of which was exceptional in a great setting.

Did anyone watch 'Invasion' performing against the backdrop of those excellent short films prior to the Eraserhead showing? I thought it was a cool and exciting, if slightly over-stimulating change of pace! No-one appears to have mentioned it yet.

  • Sigur Ros,

Okkervil River, Twilight Sad, Stewart Lee, Death Cab, BSP, Dave Gorman, Johnny Foreigner, Jeremy Hardy, Joanna Newsom, Seasick Steve, Clinic, Sebastian Tellier, Early Edition, Noah & the Whale, and Robin Ince and Ross Noble's John Peel impressions last night.

    Pretty excellent really

    • Such a good fest

I had an amazing time. Sigur Ros were my highlight - just staggering. Aaaand Joanna Newsom, Grinderman, Broken Records, Truckers of Husk, Buzzcocks, Irrepressibles. Comedy wise Rich Hall and Russel Howard were grrrreat and Miles Jupp was ace as well. Poetry: Luke Wright and Aisle 16 were fucking great as was Mik Artistik. And i saw Hamlet. Ace.

  • The Mars Volta

my fave band of the weekend... Joanna would have had it if she hadn't forgotten the words to S&D.

    other highlights:

    Broken Records
    Jon Richardson (comedy)
    improvised theater thing (hilarious)
Okkervil River (always love them live)
THE WAVE PICTURES (hurrah for the nicest band ever)
    Errors
4 hours in the comedy tent on saturday
    Franz Ferdinand were good fun
    The Twilight Sad were fab

    Shit stuff:

    rain
    rain
    rain
Tim Minchin (fucking annoying comedy song guy who was in the middle of my 4 hr comedy marathon, idiot audience loved him for some reason)

    • rain, rain, rain

are you having a laff? that wasnt rain!

    • joanna

forgetting the words was the best part of her set

  • Did anyone have trouble getting their money

back on the plastic cup deposit at the end of the festival? I had a right arse of a man giving me stick for asking for a few quid back for my cups, then he handed me a load of 20p coins, shortchanging me in the process. Twat

On a brighter note - great mix of acts, top festival.
Enjoyed seeing Irvine Welsh on first night, Grinderman my highlight on Sunday. Did some dancing to Mars Volta's noodling Saturday night.

On other notes - Julian Cope set was a shitfest, full of grumpy old men; Cope came on much later than billed and had his stage wrapped in a sheet until all the band were there...for what reason exactly? He got all dad-rock after a few decent tracks so I left, but apparently they pulled the plug on him - this true/false?

Anyone else notice that the audience were most often not for dancing?

    • God!

I spent so much money on those fucking cups. I turned my back for one minute and some cunt poor young cunt stole it and half my drink. I left good few just lying around at the end of each night and as i was packing away I found another 3 that i couldn't be arsed to take back and return.

A good idea though i think. Just don't forget to take them back and don't take your eye off your drink for a second.

      • The amount of

"limited edition" Latitude cups I found just lying about... replenished my cup cupboard to the max. Can't believe someone actually took half a drink along with yours though... shows that even at the best festival in the world, you're still going to get some cunts.

      • I saw a 10 year old...

with a sizable cup snake cashing in, the girl at the bar said he'd earnt at least £50 already. thrifty little entrepreneur.

    • Cope only played three songs...

Two newer ones then Teardrop explodes "Sleeping Gas" which went into a 15 minuted monologue as he trashed his bas guitar "for the gods" it was one of the most exciting things to watch all weekend...

  • Never before...

has the marching of a brass band brought me to tears. They were absolutely, mind-alteringly immense. Oof.

Did anybody else catch The Little Ones? I've never seen a band look that happy whilst on stage, it was ace.
And Johnny Foreigner were highlights for me, as were Joanna Newsom, Johnny Flynn, Noah and the Whale and Those Dancing Days!
Who else participated in Ross Noble's fairly shambolic, but nevertheless hilariously epic conga line?

Oh, and did anybody else catch Dave Gorman last night? Had to sacrifice a few moments of Interpol for it, but he was well worth it.

    • i thought

noah and the whale were a bit toss really

      • Yeah

        short and not so sweet

    • i also

      enjoyed the Little Ones

    • I missed a bit of Interpol

for Dave Gorman was definitely worth it! Was going to get a book but the queue was a mile long by the time I got out!

  • i had the BEST weekend

    highlights:

death cab after the sound problems cleared up
    elbow
    YACHT
    malcolm middleton
    the sunrise stage in general
catching the impromtu performance of Hamlet in the woods
    HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON
    early edition in general
    cheese crepes
    pink sheep
    johnny foreigner
the bit at the start of Cranes & Cranes & Cranes & Cranes & Cranes & Cranes & Cranes when the audience sang the intro and alexei looked like he was about to explode with joy
    apatt
    bearsuit
    jonquil
getting bored of the foals and wandering over to the lake stage to see what was happening, only for huw stephens to announce that elle s'appelle had cancelled and that paul hawkins & thee awkward silences would be replacing them
    grinderman
    grinderman
    nick cave and grinderman
the toilets not being vile for most of the weekend
the Grey Man Goes To Latitude artwork in the woods
OKKERVIL RIVER despite the crowd being horrible where i was

    i really enjoyed myself thnx

    • The grey man was by Johnny Cole

Whom I met, although he admitted he could be someone pretending to be him.

  • Johnny Foreigner...

were a bit rubbish, especially after all the hyping from YOU LOT (yes, you). Just seemed like a bad Los Campesinos (no hooks).

Rich Hall was excellent, as were several other comedians I'd never heard of before. Frankie Boyle was funny, though I was disappointed in how much of own material he'd already used on Mock the Week, just seemed a bit lazy really.

Interpol are a very boring, soul-less band.

Franz Ferdinand were enjoyable, though hardly spectacular.

The Breeders managed to come across as not being able to play their instruments properly, yet were charming and fun to watch.

    Toilets weren't too bad.

I thought the sound quality on pretty much all the stages was very very good, only a few technical problems, so kudos to the sound engineers.

There was some excellent poetry, especially one piece about a shit home decorator who used to be a geography teacher. That was not something I was expecting to hear.

Okkervil River...the first half of their set was tedious, just seemed incredibly generic and boring indie, though it improved towards the end.

I thought Foals were good, though Yannis did sound rather tired (understandably so).

  • did anyone see A-Line Lake stage sunday?

i fear we may have fallen into the 'twee boy girl duos' category...

  • Highlights:

    Lykke Li

    • To note

The whole festival was awesome, but Lykke Li was SO good.

  • bands i liked...

sigur ros (capped the festival for me, i wasn't a huge fan before but it was just perfect)
    elbow
    broken records
    jonquil
    blondie
    truckers of husk

thought interpol were a bit flat, it all felt a little phoned in. joanna newsom was great in parts, but it was a bit of a messy set generally and her new material on the piano was pretty forgettable.

  • My highlights

    The Good Bits:
Dancing to Crystal Castles outside the Sunrise tent when high.
    Silly dancing to Franz Ferdinand.
Sitting outside Guilty Pleasures in a camping chair playing an inflatable guitar.
Nice people returning my property that was stolen.
Touching Cedric from the Mars Volta.
Paul Hawkins and the Awful Silences being really good and making up for not seeing Elle S’appelle.
    Interpol!

    The Bad Bits:
The scum who slashed my tent and stole all my cash/ phone/ train tickets as I slept on Thursday night.
    Unpredictable random weather.
2 hour wait for the shuttle bus back to Ipswich, missing my train and having to spent £30 on another ticket.
    It all went too quickly.

Will go again next year though.

    • scum ^^

apparently they arrested 2 lads early Friday.

All our neighbours got done - I woke up as they unzipped our door - everything was safe anyway.

Seems like the "rob everyone on the first night" mentioned at the big chill seems to be catching on :-(

    • second that....

Woken by intruder on Thurs night/morning but got rid as woke up when they shone a torch in face. The other 40 or so tents around us weren't so lucky.

The good news is they caught 4 of the theiving scumbags on the Friday morning. It seems they recovered loads of cash but I don't think anyone got any back.

Highlights - Sigur Ross & Breeders (the latter continuing to be shambolic but great at the same time)
Best new band - Bookhouse Boys. Top!

V disappointed with the introducing stage. I definitely expected better... Huw Stephens???!!!!

It is a great festival - others could learn a thing or two.

  • Highlight of the whole festival for me was by far

the 'compost toilets' by In The Woods stage, made Latitude by far the best fest I've ever been to... and then add Joanna Newsom, Blondie, Sigur Ros and Crystal Castles to the mix + pink sheep and a field dedicated to Pimm's (just about), mental. Everyone was genuinely lovely and NO bollocks chanting from where we were camped. So good.

LOVE LOVE LOVED it, even the wristbands are nice :]

  • Musical highlights:

Johnny Foreigner on fine form and as ever looking as though they were having the time of their lives. Made a change from the raft of identikit art school bands ('What's you favourite number? What does it mean? etc etc etc etc).

Seasick Steve was everything I'd hoped he'd be, a total entertainer, I enjoyed the anecdotes as much as the songs themselves.

D-Cab were pretty good, Interpol were pretty much note perfect.

Sigur Ros were excellent, but I wasn't really in a sufficiently transcendental ambient mood to fully enjoy their sonic stylings.

Who else? The Breeders slayed, good to see Kelley and Kim still having so much fun and naturally, Cannonball got the audience reaction of the weekend.

Joanna Newsome was sublime, the occasional forgotten lyrics only endeared her to me more.

Honourable mentions to Fields, dEUS and Polly Scattergood (MASSIVE next year? If there's any justice)...oh, also Rosie and the Goldbugs were a band I'd never previously heard of, but the singer (that'd be Rosie then) had the best voice I've ever heard in my life, even her normal speaking voice was like honey, it didn't hurt that she was beautiful either.

    Other stuff:

Hanging out with codswallop, guntrip, lofisongsaregreat, wireless_enthusiast, bundoz and marshwarbler for much of the weekend plus the DiS meat which after some confusion as to precisely which tree was being referred to got under way, present were a selection of the above plus tennesseelamb71, jook, danger, testicles, scrotum, jameslutley, freshspringroll and I think that's it....apologies to any I may have forgotten, but I was pretty 'refreshed' by this point in time.
It was a seminal moment in the history of DiS/Latitude and internet/3D world interaction anyway.

    Also:

'In the Woods', the Pimm's bus, the tug-of-war contest complete with posh compere, Bill Bailey, Milton Jones, Jeremy Hardy, Ross Noble's million and one sets in various tents throughout the course of the weekend, the Disco Shed and it's by now cultlike following, fine vegetarian food galore, BBQs in the campsite, lovely people with an absolute minimum level of Reading/Leeds style cunts and what was in general just the most aesthetically pleasing festival imaginable all combined to make it the best festival I have ever experienced......sort of the ethos of Truck combined with the setting/artistic
vibe of Secret Garden Party, but all underwritten by the financial clout/organisational prowess of Festival Republic. Killer, killer, killer loved it!

The one downside was the astonishingly high rate of tent thefts which is something that I just didn't expect at all. Our tent got raided at least twice as did most of those around us. We didn't get anything taken, but it still isn't very nice and just seemed totally strange at such a nice event. I am still frankly bedazzled at the tendency for some people to keep money in their tents though, to the people who had 200 quid taken...I feel bad for you, but you must be MENTAL.

Oh, finally to DiS user testicles' friend (and ocassional DiSer) 'Terry' (or Teri/Terri...some variation, sorry I don't know!) who was reportedly 'star struck', it was just the sweetest (and most baffling) thing ever! :D

I'm going to a greasy spoon for the full English to end them all now.

    Peace out.

    Alex x

    • Oh! P.S:

Spotting Paul Hawkins (plus assorted members of Thee Awkward Silences) walking past us whilst we were watching Nada Surf only to discover that they'd been drafted in as last minute replacements for Elle S'Appelle on the Lake Stage.

Upon attending the show the band proceeded to utterly slay with the usually mild mannered Paul Hawkins transforming into a rock monster, jumping from the stage, climbing the crowd barrier and proceeding to sing amongst the crowd like the Henry Rollins of his generation!

Suffice to say, the audience loved it and they must have got amongst the best crowd reactions that the stage saw throughout the course of the festival.

      Absolute triumph!

      • Thanks

It was a lot of fun. And very nice to see you again too!

      • do you remember

when I helped you buy those cigarettes? How ever would you have managed without me?

        • I do, you suggested that the cigarette girl wore nipple tassles!

I have to say it would have been a nice touch, you also informed her that she had a 'smokin' hot body' which was puntastic and also totally true!

          Nice to meet you Meg.

    • Highlights....

Buying Alex-in-Ciderland a pint of cider.

  • Best Weekend of Life.

Joanna Newsom (slip-ups or not), Elbow, Sigur Ros - these are easily my top three. I fell in love with Jo all over again, and Guy Garvey's voice literally broke my soul during Crane Driver. I was swaying alongside him, and yeah, I am so FUCKING glad I saw them at last.

Death Cab were good, as were Interpol.

Murder By Death marred by bad sound but otherwise rocking. Twilight Sad loud, however good. Wild Beasts fucking tits-out awesome.

Only regrets having watched the whole of a Grinderman set, the double-schedule of the Volta with Sigur, and no visits to the smaller lit/etc tents this year. Also not being un-stoned for more than an hour all weekend.

    • I spotted Alex from Franz just outside the Uncut Stage

I asked him if he would like a picture and when he said "Yeah sure!" I put my arm around my friend and said "Ok then. Have you got a camera phone?" and stood there with a big cheesey smile on my face.

Well, it kept me entertained anyway.

      • :D

        • Amadou

          Anyone catch amadou and mariam?

          • Can't really add to the good stuff that's already been said above;

but I'd agree that Interpol were superb (first time I've heard them play NYC, third time I've seen them); I thought they noticeably upped their game from The Lighthouse onwards.

Elbow were good, but were limited to playing quite a cheesy, anthemic festival set - although ...Tower Crane Driver was mindblowing. Garvey wasn't on his best form, thanking all and sundry and not cracking any jokes - also the gaps between the songs seemed as long as the songs themselves!

Franz were surprisingly good - confident, swaggering and underlining how much their first album is better than their other stuff.

Not a great fan of Sigur Ros, but hands up, THAT is how to headline a festival.

Thought British Sea Power were boring and The Aliens were fucking shite.

In terms of comedy, enjoyed the dad-jokes of Milton Jones, as well as Frankie Boyle and Otis Lee Crenshaw. Stewart Lee again struck me as smug, not as clever as he thinks he is, and a comedian who people think they should like.

Biggest let-don was Sebastien Tellier being cut after four songs. That was clearly building into a magnificent set; the guy is a star.

Also, did ANYONE else see Eli 'Paperboy' Reed and the True Loves in the Film and Music arena as part of teh Mark Lamarr night? What a voice!

            • aliens

were just embarrassing - if that guy is the robot man then we have nothing to fear from technology...

              • all of their songs seemed to go _______ MAN!

I remember Robot Man, there was DEFINITELY one called Magic Man, and there was another one that went ".... man!".

The fact that The Beta Band were so good just heightened their crapness

      • good work!

did your mate enjoy himself despite your lies?!!

        • Yeah he had a great time.

I think he was flattered that I had gone to such extremes to get him there. But I think it got to him a bit when he had to get the train back to London (a train I told him would take and hour and cost £12.50) and it took over 3 hours and cost him £50. Ah well, he lies when he's trying to cajoul me into doing stuff.

Cheers for sorting out the ticket. The revenge plan couldn't have worked without you ;)

          • glad to hear it

I find 'revenge plans' work rather well with innocent third party involvement!
Never fails to amaze me how much train companies get away with charging. ho-hum.

            • Choc full of highlights

              Here's my story.

              Thursday -

A killer of a seven hour journey with my mates Jim and Jo.

Meeting some lovely people from Wales in the bar by the Yellow campsite and talking about 'Mclusky do Dallas' for about 3 hours.

Sharing a campfire with a some very cool early thirties types from London - Ed, Emily and Andy. If they do post on here at all... Hello, we had some good times and looking forward to Emily's fantasy festival coming to fruition. Parking in Hackney eh? Shocking.

              Friday -

Discovering Kyte, Bearsuit and Errors on the Lake Stage. Gravenhurst in the Uncut Tent, as beautiful as anything I heard all weekend. Chilling out to the much derided Beth Orton who I thought was fantastic! Enjoying BSP on the main stage, but being a bit annoyed by the lack of crowd participation and the sound seemed a bit off. Johnny Foreigner being ace and getting kissed on the face by Alexei after he remembered me from the Wrexham gig. Seeing two half-naked women doing an interprative dance about Robert Mugabe. Talking to pink sheep and giving them nicknames. Getting bored of Franz Ferdinand after two songs and seeing Amadou and Mariam who made me dance the most all weekend! Going to the dis meet-up and scaring people nearly young enough to be the fruit of my loins. I remember thinkign it was like an AA meeting! Trying to dance in the woods to Queens of the Stone Age and failing miserably. Chainsmoking and getting pretty messed up with Alex in Ciderland and Marshwarbler until 5 in the morning.

              Saturday -

Got two hours sleep because of the toffs from Oxford Uni near us who decided it was funny to lay into people from the North at the top of their lungs, especially Liverpool, knowing full well that Jo was a scouser. Cunts. I hope you get head cancer. As a result lived off Red Bull for a few hours and suddenly got energy as the sun livened up!

Started by the lake stage and saw The Beep Seals (ace!), Wave Machines (shocking) and Truckers of Husk (fantastic!) After that, hit a bit of a low and went back to the tent to chill. Came back for Deus who were astounding, 'Suds & Soda' was the highlight. Seasick Steve was as amazing as I hoped. There's nothing quite like seeing a 70 year old man hitting a plank of wood on the main stage. 'It's alll good!' Jeremy Hardy was cracking in the comedy tent. Did noone see Sky Larkin? Not the best set of alltime, but pretty blinding and Katie looked like the cool girl doing the photography degree you've always wanted to get near to but would eat you alive. Hot basically. Met up with Alex and was introduced to the legend of Codswallop by the Pimms bus, went back for Sigur Ros, but couldn't really see much so ended up talking about Nathan Barley. 'Going down saaaaf, gonna use me maaaaf!'. Alex and I wondering off the woods afterwards and chatting for hours about the lack of 'clear blue water' in British politics. Rock n' Roll!

              Sunday -

Went down for Joanna Newsom and she mesmerised me to tears as I lay on the grass watching the clouds pass by. The harp songs were better, on piano she sounded too much like another Kate Bush wannabe.

Met up with Alex, Marshwarbler Ian and Codswallop again after Joanna and was introduced to WirelessEnthusiast, Bundoz and Guntrip. Watched Fields, The Twilight Sad and These New Puritans, the latter being the worst band I have the misfortune of coming anywhere near me in the history of my existence. It gets worse the more I think about it. *shudders*

Spent most of the afternoon from then watching comedy. Milton Jones, Otis Lee Crenshaw and the main man for me - Stewart Lee. Missed Lovvers, as the stage times seemed to be fucked up on Lake, Gay! After that decided to hang around the bar and drink large amounts of Tuborg before Grinderman, the one band I really HAD to see. Best band of the weekend HANDS DOWN. Highlight was 'No Pussy Blues' which included my only moshpit of the weekend and me being elbowed very hard on the head. Worth it though. After that met up with the dis crew AGAIN and watched Interpol, which I enjoyed more than I thought I was going too, despite being more monged out than at anytime previously.

And that, pretty much, is that. Next Year anyone? I wasn't talking to anyone who goes to Oxford Uni though.

              • Ey up!

What was the name of that Japanese author you mentioned again?

              • Ahhh...the memories are flooding back now!

                :D

              • lovvers were fucking INCREDIBLE

they actually started on time but they only played for about 15 minutes :D

                • I had to laugh at the singers opening gambit straight after they had finished their first song....

"Latitude with Attitude.....have a good weekend"?

  • ALSO

i totally wish i'd made it along to the DiS meetup on friday night. i stayed up drinking with alex until about 4am on thursday night and then spent an hour walking around the campsite in a drunken haze trying to find my tent and i was totally destroyed on friday as a result. sadface :(

    • loser

Alex tried to phone you and I was primed with some quality abuse, but then something distracted me and I forgot. you have a lucky escape.

      • P.S

Forgot about the Disco Shed, dancing to Drum and Bass and desperately hoping that he'd go on a hip hop binge and play J5. Sadly not.

      • you know where my PM inbox is!

    • I completely wish that I had gone as well.

      Gutted :(

      • Alright dude!

I saw you Sunday night, seemingly passed out in a chair? Might have been someone else. Haven't listened to your band yet, will put it on my MP3 player later and report back.

        • Yeah, was that whe the Breeders were playing?

Let me know what you think?

We are realy pleased with the first track, we onl recorded it a week ago on Sunday.

          How was your journey back?

          • May have been just after the Breeders

I wandered over to the bar and was gonna say hello, but I wasn't sure if it was.

Journey back was ok, I slept for half of it. Got back home just before four after leaving at 10. Probably the most amount of sleep I got in the whole weekend!

Look forward to hearing your stuff.

          • Kudo's

to Wild Beasts, Johnny Foreigner, Interpol, Elbow, Ross Noble, The Twilight Sad (who seemed unbelievably uncomfortable) and Death Cab For Cutie.

Joanna Newsom was captivating. I also got to watch a recording of 'Just A Minute' with Phil Jupitus, Ross Noble and Paul Merton :) Cool!

  • The amount of people on here

who saw Johnny Foreigner over the Go! Team is unbelievable.

    • The amount of people at Latitude who saw the Go! Team over JoFo....

      is even more incredible!

      • i like jofo

but i thought they where pathetic live, really really unimpressed

    • Despite the quietness of Ninja's vocal..

I thought the Go! Team were bloody great, as always.

      • I'm about to be grilled...

I found Sigur Ros a bit dull... I thought they were pretty lifeless, and they were the band I was most looking forward to seeing... :-(

Other than that disappointment I had a great weekend... Cheers those of you who came to The Exploits of Elaine, I really enjoyed playing and Performers passes are the best way to go!!!!!

      • the go! team

were actually pretty ace, I forgot to mention them in my initial summing up, but we were there for BSP/Death Cab/Franz and saw them in between. It was great, everyone round us was there to see Death Cab after but they got absolutely everyone dancing (except two exceptionally committed misery guts emos who spent them time either looking pissed off or making fun of everyone who was having fun and dancing). Ninja has THE most incredible amount of energy...

    • it was entirely worth it

for the look on alexei's face at the start of Cranes & Cranes & Cranes & Cranes.

      • Sigur Ros were good

but the amount of hyperbole on here is fucking irritating. It wasnt life changing, even on various substances. They try far too hard to be all ethereal and whatever, and there were lulls in the set. Mogwai pwnd them at the first Latitude.

        • I certainly wouldn't say it was life changing

but i actually saw people dancing and really enjoying themselves at a Sigur Ros gig. Usually there's just a shite boring silence and clapping in between songs. It was fun and that's not something i could say i've had at a Mogwai gig before (as much as i like mogwai).

          • Highlights for me:

Sigur Ros were absolutely gorgeous and all I expected from them

Interpol were the best I've ever seen them (I was standing right at the front for my favourite band and two minutes to go until they got on stage- and then realised I really needed the toilet....comical)

Grinderman were brilliant....No pussy blues was electrifying....how I imagine The Stooges to be like on form

Clinic were excellent and they're new stuff is great

Joanna Newsom was adorable and her voice and playing was entrancing

Others who were great: Breeders, Crystal Castles, Howling Bells, Foals, Deus, Gravenhurst, British Sea Power

Michael Nyman and The Heavy in the film tent were excellent, and there was an interesting interview with the director of the Joy Division documentary which I caught

Saw a couple of comedians who were alright but were pretty filthy, and one utterly shit one caled Tim Minchin, like Newton Faulkner with crap jokes.

Cunts of the festival award goes to the posh twats who pushed in front for Sigur Ros because their friends wanted to see the band, and proceeded to ignore the band, talk shit about Sigur Ros playing a "more dancey tune" and amusing themselves by taking photos of themselves over and over again. Almost ruined them for me.

Oh, and when I went to buy some pizza from the van I realised I was standing behind all four Arctic Monkeys. I reckon they saw the Thai food queue like me and decided to go for pizza.

            • the thai queue was ridiculous

but so tasty in the end...

And Tim Minchin was a legend. Not his best songs (apart from that new one, Racism - brilliant) but still, thought he was great. Helluva lot better than bloody Bill Bailey...

              • Well, that was just my opinion of Minchin.

I didn't like his voice or songs, they just seemed pretty uninspired and cliched. Like the one about the critic who gave him a bad review- the lyrics were just so weak- it wasn't even stupid funny, just stupid.

                • James Hunter

and The Buzzcocks were fucking amazing in the film and music area, especially as I didnt realise it was THE Buzzcocks playing until an hour before and thought it was a Never Mind The...show.

Saturday night won. I like Mark Lamarr a bit now, though he's still a twat, he winked at me for singing to Gang Of Four. Woop.

                  • What about Eli 'Paperboy' Reed?

                    He was awesome as well.

                    • missed him

well, was trying to get backstage when he was on

  • did anyone see...

the cow tent in the camp site?

    that was awesome

    • Which campsite?

We only had a 'kick-ass' Pimms tent on our campsite (yellow D) ;).

A big fuck you and i hope you die painfully & slowly, to the human excreta that slashed our tent whilst we slept in the early hours of Friday morning and stole my girlfriends bag. The bag and all of its contents (bar the cash) were recovered swiftly due to the kindness of strangers - thank you thank you thank you! :)

Apart from the above (and the bloody wait for the shuttle home and missing our train >:() we all had a fab time and i'll defo be going next year. Even the naff weather couldnt spoil the vibe. So despite a couple of baby scars, Lats is where its ats for me! :D

      • p.s.

It was also really great seeing Paul Hawkins & The Awkward Silences perform on the lake stage. They gave The Mars Volta a run for their monet alright!

Really good meeting Alex-in-ciderland and co too!

      • There was so much robbing at this festival

My friend camped next to me was robbed in her sleep Friday morning.
As were about 10 people around us the same night.

        • my friend had her bag robbed while she was sleeping

they took her purse but just abandoned the bag a few metres away. Dunno why since it had a sat nav and car keys in.

          • The key to this is....

to forget just about everything you need for a festival, only pack copious amounts of vodka and some spare pants, and end up having to use your bag as a pillow.

Having said that, thanks to the vodka, an intruder could probably have picked me up, put me outside the tent, stolen my stuff and slep in my tent without me noticing....

          • same happened to us

we were in the red campsite.

the wardens said they were only taking cash because if they took property then the owners could prove it belonged to them. this clearly isn't possible with cash.

apparently a job lot of fellas from manchester were caught and handed over to the police.

            • The police told my friend that the best thing to do

is to sign your bank notes, and if the thieves get caught you can claim the money back at the lost property.

              Theoretically anyway.

    • i was right beside it

made for a good marker when stumbling home

  • The disco shed.

    That is all.

    • highlights =

      sigur ros
      death cab for cutie
      dave gorman
      omid djalili
      johnny foreigner
      joanna newsom
      seasick steve
      james yuill
      soko
      interpol
film & music tent (particularly the b&w film with the barbarosa soundtrack)
      and yes, the Disco Shed.

      • Meant to see Dave Gorman, man-poo.

What stuff was he doing? The America Unchained thing or just general Gorman-ess?

  • fanfarlo

...were my surprise of the weekend, as I thought Ida Maria was on. They were excellent, although they did remind me a LOT of Beirut, I don't think you can really have too much of that kind of thing.

    • gorman

he read a v funny chapter from the america unchained book but also spouted off some general gorman-ness that was fantastic :) worth getting rained on for! he did overlap with interpol but still managed to catch most of their set.

  • Personal highlights

The piano. George Pringle (the most 'punk' performance I saw all weekend). Malcolm Middleton. Jonquil (although they have a couple of TERRIBLE TERRIBLE tracks they need to jettison). Errors. The Wave Pictures. Sigur Ros (best first half of a gig, ever, possibly). Oh, and I saw Pinback and Phosphorescent earlier that week. That doesn't count, but they were great too. Programs were dead cheap aye, giving them away almost.
