Becoming vegetarian

Can someone give me a list of pros and cons. I am seriously considering it because I have recently met someone who has really made me reconsider my opinions on such things. I currently only eat free range meat, lovely fish and game, in small quantities.

Also, I really like lentils, chick peas and kidney beans.

yep

but that doesn't mean i'm pro-animal rights. i'd never deny that fox hunting is horrible, i see it more as a necessary evil.

Did you mean 'anti-animal rights' there?

Otherwise I'm confused.

that's crap

if there is a problem with the fox population for farmers, they should set traps or go out and shoot them in the head, not have the things pulled to pieces by dogs in what can only be the most horrific, prolonged way to die imaginable.

why don't you just try being vegetarian for a month, say

and see if the glove fits, so to speak?

^

or eat some really really bad meat.

I think I'm slowly going this way

unintentionally

Vegetarian food- nice

Vegan food- nice
Deliberately limiting yr own options- yawnfest

Although the best argument I've heard against this:

"well, are you bisexual?" Lol.

Well I know YOU are

so it probably doesn't work against you. Er...

I'm lost.

How does being bisexual influence what you eat?

not really

i don't think it's necessary to eat meat or even animal products in this day and age. limiting yourself makes you experiment more with the things you can eat, if you see what i mean.

(we just have vegetable stew/stir fry/roast vegetables every day because it's all we can afford innit)

Like I said, the food is really nice

I could eat it every day, probably wouldn't miss meat, least not in a "I MUST have meat" sort of way.

But then I'd see one of those really nice cheese crust pork pies in Manchester Markets and be all like: "well why NOT have one?" But I guess thats because I'm not invested in animal rights and/or eating the same food as my partner.

true

i like going past fish stalls and smelling them, but never really feel any great urge to buy any of it. this is probably because i couldn't be bothered to cook it though.

You'll never sit in the Sainsburys car park

Eating pre-roasted chicken. :(

:D

i've got a mid-life crisis to come yet. no fast cars for me, just a two month long meat binge.

Man...

those were the days. After they invent a veggie version of that I might as well give up on life because no-one will want to touch me given i've got veggie chicken juice all running down my face and body.

I have found it easy to avoid meat

Bean burgers are nicer anyways ANNNNNNND its an excuse for me to indulge in cheese more :D I feel a lot healthier and am liking saalallllalalalallalalalalalalaads more!

OOOO would this person u met happen to be a girl, if it is and your doing it to get off with her then you shouldnt become one because your heart wont be in it... just your winky dinky ;)

:)

Is it me?

:)

is it me?

i always consider it

i could go without pork, beef and lamb, but i do eat quite a lot of chicken.

i love lentials, chick peas, beans, salad, fruit and bread as well.

you can eat eggs and cheese as a veggie cant you? i eat so much cheese.

you could always give it a try

that's probably the best way to find out if it's for you, you know

I'm not vegetarian,

but probably around 80% of all the meals I eat are. And I've never eaten better. Going out with a vegetarian has turned me into a half-decent cook.

Con: it's all too easy to overdose on cheese

Who'da thunk it?

thatwarn*

what

but his name is thewarn

what you said makes no sense

i have to agree

that's one of your least sensical posts in a while, ducky

Only that I've run out of cheese.

But then I wake up and I haven't, so that's ok.

My mate Jimmy once ate a huge chunk of cheddar before bed in an attempt to induce nightmares. Didn't work. Poor Jimmy.

:D

in my experience

you just get laughed or taken pity on!

laughed at**

It's fine

there aren't pros and cons as such, unless you go on holiday somewhere where there aren't many vegetarians, then it's a pain in the arse. If you want to do it, it's not difficult.

How many vegans are there on DiS?

Is it just me, dash_and_blast, scarlet_apples and laura_wolf?

charlotte's a vegan now?

when did this happen? she never tells me anything.

i'm vegan! i guess. COOL.

Unless she's been lying to me.

Which, to be honest, is perfectly feasible.

she said she was being vegan at atp

and then didn't eat because of it. idiot. i think she probably did tell me actually, but she's too busy to see me these days so she could be dead for all i know.

I managed

to stay vegan at atp...

me too

but it's not the best time to decide you're going to be vegan.

yes.

golden blue is in our club.

....

should we make badges?

^ i'm trying.

not quite got there yet, but my heart's in the right place and i'll manage it soonish.

that was quite the jump.

straight from carnivore to vegan?

not quite, but small steps and all that.

I keep falling off the waggon, so to speak, i'm trying to convince my friend to do it with me, i need the moral support.

I reckon go vege first for a bit.

And don't stop eating meat or whatever right away. If you have meat in the house then eat it, just say you're not gonna buy anymore, and go from there.

I'm vegan

*a moron.

OUCH

Why do you hate me? :'(

Oh, and

Charlotte's telling you she's vegan? Lol.

pshhh

et moi! are you forgetting that amazing vegan cake recipe i made for you?

i've been vegan for all of 12 hours now

it's going pretty well, since all i've eaten is a banana.

aside from the ethical reasons..

the british medical association says "vegetarians have lower rates of obesity, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, large bowel disorders, cancers and gall stones. cholesterol levels tend to be lower in vegetarians"

and the world cancer research fund says "vegetarian groups have been shown to have lower risk of cardiovascular disease, lower rates of obesity and longer life expectancy than meat-eaters"

can't argue with longer life!

vegetarianism is also much better for the environment. growing crops uses less water and is much less polluting than meat production.

how do they account for all the countries

where vegetarianism basically non-existant where people have much higher life expectancy than people in britain

Many other factors

DOY

the implication of whats quoted above is that meat is the root cause of these things

yet there are a lot of countries in which meat-eating is far more central to what people eat than it is in britain, in these countries (in an apparent paradox) people in general live longer lives than in britain

what are the other factors which cancel out meat being this bad for you, could people not just do them instead and not worry about vegetarianism

meat eating itself is not the cause of this

it's the eating of meat-based unhealthy products, particularly, like i said, from fast food restaurants (in terms of the figures, anyway). you can be healthy and eat meat, you can be unhealthy and be vegetarian. it's just easier to be unhealthy if you eat meat

absolutely none

except the occasional fish and chips LOL

i haven't ever had a macdonalds/burger king etc etc etc EVER in my life

You haven't lived.

Make sure you have a bigmac before going vegetarian.

no thanks

the thought of it makes me feel disgustingly sick. although looking at the cheese in addition, it would probably put me off ever eating animal products ever again

eh?

the implication of what's quoted above is not that meat is the root cause of those things. where do you get that from? it just says that vegetarians tend to have lower rates etc...

yeah

it's easier to be healthy as a vegetarian

or, it's easier to be unhealthy as a meat-eater

it doesn't mean you'll be either

see, the obesity thing

the figures are probably that way to an extent because the vast majority of fast food - certainly most of the more unhealthy fast food - is meat-based. people who consume huge amounts of fast food are going to skew the figures that way because there tend to much much fewer, say, vegetarians who consume vast amounts of fast food

which isn't to say being vegetarian is a bad thing, i'd probably just stay overweight by porking out (no pun intended) on houmous.

Still,

somebody who is fat from burgers is going to be less healthy than someone who is fat from hummus/houmous/houmus/humous.

yes

particularly because they'll have less saturated fat intake

but they'll still be fat

oh dear

Hey

can you see my tongue? Notice it's placement relative to my cheek. You may be surprised to note it is firmly in it.

okay

because i was being 1000% serious with my character judgement when i said "oh dear"

not as good as vegans.

:)

i can't think of any cons

but i don't like the taste of meat and you do. if you are ok at cooking and live in an area with good shops then it's not difficult at all.

Yeah!

pros - Better for the environment, makes you cooler, makes you healthier, superiority complex
cons - NONE!

also

cheaper to feed yourself and you'll actually find yourself eating more adventurously when you don't rely on The Meat being The Focus of The Meal.

India is a brilliant country for vegetarians in terms of cuisine.

That's a brilliant idea

All the vegetarians should go to India :D

For joking?

It's self-deprecating as much as anything else. I have no more problem with veganism or vegetarianism than I have with Christianity.

What are your problems with christianity?

Go on, explain, heretic.

fine

we'll have a better time away from all this RELENTLESS PERSECUTION.

yeah,

and look where that's got them!
As opposed to France,Germany(especially Gemany),and so on
