Beginner's guide to hip-hop

I've never really listened to much hip hop, but I really like cLOUDDEAD, Why?, Subtle and the Beastie Boys - what else should I listen to and why?

  • Motorhead

    -

    • Morris Minor and the Majors

      x

      • is Why? hip-hop?

he can't really rap, can't really sing, just some weird hybrid thing with a bit of spoken word chucked in for good measure

      • if you like those

maybe check the rest of the Anticon stuff out? My favourite is a guy called Sole. Bottle of humans is probably my favourite 'hip hop' record.

          • Aesop Rock, Company Flow, El-P and Cannibal Ox

The def jux crew basically. They will get you into hip hop, as they rap good, do great production, but tend to eschew some of the more 'gangster' elements of hip hop.

Also if you8 like Beastie Boys, check out Spank Rock and The Cool Kids (ignore the terrible name).

            • I listened to a few Cool Kids tracks

yesterday for the first time thinking I'd really dislike them and was pleasnatly surprised.

The production really reminds me of the last Clipse album, albeit with slightly lame daisy age chat over the top.

              • fuck

                spelling

              • Agreed

                Cool Kids are fucking awful.

              • Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury

it's the most accesible and bangin stright down rap record I have heard in a while. The beats are huge and stripped back. The rappin is also top notch.

                • wicked beats

                  wack rap

                  • ^5

                    exactly

                  • ..

YOU don't need anything else really.

                    • Clipse

will keep ya goin for freakin ages I still play it quite alot. They are a wicked cross over from kinda undergroud stuff to more mainstream sounding stuff. Once you get into Clipse you pretty much enjoy most kinds of hiphop...

                      ... maybe

                  • I dunno, I quite like them

Even if they veer perilously close to J-5 retro rubbish.

                    • I enjoy them

just dont rate their rappin to much. I cn stick it on and have a luagh though. Nowt worng with a bit of reto lovin nw and again.

                • Genre defining

                  one must agree.

                  • I'll lend you a bundle of stuff if you like?

                    • sole is probably the best

                      rapper on the anticon label.

and if you like him then try sage francis i guess.

                      • Sage Francis is a poor man's Saul Williams

                        • you're a poor mans marlvrum

                          yeah, i went there.

                        • Anticon are pretty shit now

Did have some awesome releases a few years ago, but nothing decent recently apart from Why?

                          Brother Ali

His Undisputed Truth is the best hip hop album of recent years, that i've heard anyway.

Some others worth checking that you may like and haven't been mentioned:

                          Eyedea & Abilities
                          Dessa
                          Atmosphere

                          • similar to those you mentioned

Themselves - Jel and Doseone from Subtle. when i spoke to doseone the other night he mentioned that they've got a new album out soon, which would be free and would be "going back to the roots of hip-hop". it sounds exciting.

                            • Sage Francis > Saul Williams

                            • ...

I'd try and move away from the Anticon side of things and into other areas of hiphop otherwise you're missing out on so much incredible music.

As mentioned before, go to Def Jux first as an entrypoint: El-P - Fantastic Damage, Mr Lif - I Phantom, Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein. Not on DJ but also try Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus and Edan - Beauty and the Beat. All are modern classics and have a deepseated love in hiphop. Then get Nas' Illmatic - one of the best albums ever made.

The great thing about hiphop is that it all links together - producers, guest stars, collaborations etc. You can build your own map moving outwards by seeing what you like on various records, which is much harder with other genres.

                            • well

in addition to the classics ('It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back', 'Straight Outta Compton', 'The Chronic', '36 Chambers', 'Paul's Boutique', '...Endtroducing') I would highly recommend the following:

                              Buck 65 - Talking Honky Blues (gravel-toned country-hip-hop)
Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass (brilliant, eloquent and humourous)
Sleep - Christopher ('slacker' hiphop, laid back and musically interesting)
Hangar 18 - The Multiplatinum Debut Album (what I'd call 'classic' hiphop, just loads of sweet rhymes and thumping beats - cracking)
Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust (agressive yet eloquent, really unique style)

and try out stuff by Saul Williams (similar to Sage in many ways) and Josh Martinez (worked with Sleep a lot, part of Oldominion).

If you like cLOUDDEAD and Why? you'd probably also like 13&God and Subtle -all that Anticon stuff really.

Oh, and DiS favs like Cadence Weapon and El-P, you'll find a load of stuff about them on this site.

And you might like more laidback groovy stuff like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.

                              Meh, just my recommendations.

                              /end thread

                              • "/end thread"

                                Fuck off.

                                • I'll second Phil and suggest Company Flow

                                  Also Peanut Butter Wolf
.....and my personal favourite, the massively overlooked and incredibly hard to find New Kingdom.

                                • That hurt.

Has anyone mentioned Jehst or Roots Manuva yet?
