I'm at a bit of an impasse with music at the moment and I'm having trouble finding decent bands to listen to, so how about recommending some to me?
I'll list some bands that I like and you can use them to guage my tastes.
First of all I'd like some good 80s/90s American alternative bands. Bands I already like include: Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Sonic Youth, The Sea and Cake (and Sam Prekop solo stuff) Guided by Voices, Beat Happening, Sebadoh, Neutral Milk Hotel (plus most of the elephant 6 bands), Lambchop, Minutemen.
In this category I DONT like: The Replacements, Husker Du, Built to Spill.
Secondly I'd like ome good 60s/70s funk or soul. People/bands I already like: Sly & the family stone, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Roy Ayers, George Clinton (funkadelic and parliament).
I DONT want any synthy 80s shit, and definitely NO PRINCE.
Some good modern underground rap/ hip-hop. Artists I already like: Quasimoto, Madvillain, J-Dilla, Jurassic 5, Arsonists, Madkap.
I'm not that into overly violent gangster rap, I want experimental/jazzy stuff.
Good folky/country/bluesy stuff. I Like: Tim Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Bon Iver, Iron & Wine, (Smog). I DONT like Bob Dylan (sorry people - I know its blasphemy), Jodi Mitchell or crappy English folk about fairies and shit.
Everything else: Any other recommendation that don't fit into this would be great, so long as they don't sound too much like Bruce Springsteen (although I do like The National), Prince, Patty Smith, Jodi Mitchell or modern dancy indie like Foals etc.To guide you in this category I have recently been listening to: Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Joanna Newsome, Bad Brains, Charles Mingus, Tom Waits, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, TV on the Radio.
I know this isn't very succint, but don't worry about throwing in wild suggestions - I have soulseek....
Thanks

"In this category I DONT like: The Replacements, Husker Du, Built to Spill"
:'( :'( :'(
I lost interest at that point
same here, i stopped reading...

What he said.
there's something i really don't like about this thread
but i can't put my finger on it.
is it the very black and white nature of it?
a is good, b is bad?
suggest me something but don't you dare suggest something I might not fully like
that sounded a tad harsh
apologies
It was completely fair though
some ideas - some of which are prob familiar
my favourite song is by a guy called Alessio who records as Banjo or Freakout
http://tinyurl.com/6zka5f
also I would be surprised if you don't like Fanfarlo and Ra Ra Riot (instrumental & lovely vocals)
you probably know White Williams & Cut Copy
I don't here much here about the Ruby Suns & Abe Vigoda both of which are good recent issues
chuck some electonics into your indie
see what happens.
Anything from German label Morr Music is usually pretty decent, viz:
Lali Puna
Styrofoam
The Notwist
Herrmann & Kleine
etc.
Right, I'll take you on:
1) Yo La Tengo/Pavement type bands: Try 'Viva L'American Death Ray Music', especially the album 'in the meantime...'
2) Funk/soul: Best modern example I can think of is Jamie Lidell's 'Multiply' - the track 'The City' is so far the best example of updating the classic soul sound using modern technology, without missing the soul, if you know what i mean? Bah...
3) For a start, grab a copy of Well Deep, the Big Dada compilation. A lot of the best hip-hop from the UK & US in the last ten years. Try 'The Coup' too; they're a leftist American hip-hop group. Listen to the track 'My Favourite Mutiny'.
4) Tiny Vipers: On Sub Pop, like Joanna Newsom with a guitar. Definitely get Laura Marling's album, 'Shine' is an immense song. Fionn Regan, also Mercury-nominated but last year, has a great album on Bella Union: 'The End Of History'. Laura Veirs is lovely, as are Espers, Vashti Bunyan, Devin Davis, Ani DiFranco. And buy the Complete Recordings of Blind Willie McTell, Robert Johnson and Skip James - all essential.
ANYTHING ELSE: MATSON JONES - best band ever.
you are welcome to consult my profile
a veritable treasure trove of pleasing artists. I have only listed those that I buy with impunity so there is no risk of failure and no need to consider which to buy- 100% brilliance.
In terms of folk
I'd recommend The Battle Of Land And Sea, I've mentioned them a lot but their album is absolutely stunning, I'd also suggest charalambides 2006 record, 'A Vintage Burden' and Cath and Phil Tyler's, dark story telling alt folk,.
Khanate
Sort of like everything you mentioned you like in a band.
here's some recommendations that don't fit:
www.myspace.com/downigo
www.myspace.com/adebisishank
www.myspace.com/leatherbeatsfeather
YOU'RE NOT THE REAL JIMITHEEXPLODER
whats going on?
anyway, times new viking is lo-fi american alternative
you'd probably like deerhunter and deerhoof
splendora
for 90's american alt bands
Madvillain you say?
Madvillainy is my favorite hip hop album of this decade so far. It seems that Madlib (always prolific) just remixed their classic album ... it's a sketchy move, like "if it ain't broke don't fix it," but Madlib's got his own way about him. I've been listening to the album all week. They got the digital version of Madvillainy 2, but also a huge box set. Over at http://www.stonesthrow.com You should def. check that joint.
you have a pretty impressive profile
what are you doing on this forum?
I would consider changing your name tho
cause we got a jimitheexploder already and he explodes alot so maybe you could be Jimmy The Imploder.
60s/70s funk
Try some defunkt
Tunng and James Yuill
Folktronica. Always hated that genre title though.
