Re: The Flaming Lips

They bore the pants off me.

Re: The Flaming Lips

overrated but gret live and still thumbs up really

Re: The Flaming Lips

Well at least they get your pants off.
More than most bands do I'm sure.

Re: The Flaming Lips

They get the pants off me too, but in a good way.

Has anyone tried zaireeka? At full volume with some friends, it FRIED my brain. Amazing

Re: The Flaming Lips

Do you have Zaireeka? Tyhe second I find someone who owns it and is willing, I'm throwing a zaireeka party at my place.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Yes I do. You could borrow it if you like

Re: The Flaming Lips

Yay! Zaireeka party! I've always wanted to do one of those!

Re: The Flaming Lips

What's Zaireeka? The Flaming Lips are one of those bands I know nothing about, might get my obsessed mate to make me a best of cd-r.

Re: The Flaming Lips

OK. Let's set a date. Quadrophonic Zaireka party at my house. I can't wait. seriously. Yay!

Re: The Flaming Lips

Oh is it the thing they released where you have to listen to 4 cds at once? my obsessed mate has that.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Zaireeka = album by the Lips comprised of 4 CDs that need to be played simultaneously. You just know it's gonna be awesome.

Re: The Flaming Lips

You comin then? :D

Re: The Flaming Lips

Hell yes! :D

Re: The Flaming Lips

OK... my midi thing, SCL's midi thing (with my personal CD player plugged into it coz the CD player's broke), SCL's computer... we're a ghetto blaster short. Nah, Gemma's got one in her room I'm sure. This is totallt do-able. Week after next? I'm Not going to Reading anymore (cashflow). So I need something to make up for it (other than both Pixies shows).

Re: The Flaming Lips

I didn't get Yoshimi at all. Over the top art rock. The Soft Bulletin is quit nice, though. And their earlier stuff is better. I love that Jelly (?) video. I hear they're one of the best evah bands live, so I'm looking forward to seeing them (at some other place than a festival).

Re: The Flaming Lips

Damn straight.

New album expected shortly.

Yay.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Oh, yeah. And David Bowie says they're the best band ever, too. High praise, indeed.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Dave does also like NIN and Placebo mind.

Re: The Flaming Lips

But it's DAVID BOWIE. I'm almost prepared to listen to Placebo again to see if he's right. Almost.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Dave toured with NIN when he was trying to win over the industrial crowd...for whatever ill advised reason. Dunno about Placebo. Do know Bowie was the one who shouted PIXIES way back when. Anyway, nobody's perfect, but db is damn close. Please, mug mug, don't make me fly over to your house and beat you with a golf club. ;-)

Re: The Flaming Lips

As much as the sight of a flying man with a golf club outside my house is amusing I have nothing bad to say about Bowie. He even covers the 'Cactus' apparently but I ain't heard it.

Did you know he was supposed to produce the first Devo album but was too busy so Brian Eno did it instead? I read that last night and he went higher in my estimation :)

Re: The Flaming Lips

Hold on...of a generation??? That's just a smidge too much adolation for a band who make me want to poo more. Which generation we talking then??

Re: The Flaming Lips

Even if the flaming lips do make you poo, it will probably be the happiest coolest prettiest poo ever.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Oh yeah, were talking about my iGeneration

Re: The Flaming Lips

Oh just piss off John_Brainlove will you.

Re: The Flaming Lips

You again... haven't you got work to be getting on with mr obvious pseudonym king?

Re: The Flaming Lips

I adore them.

Re: The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips are utterly superb. Brilliant albums, brilliant stage show, an they do their own soundchecking which always scores points with me. Cool cats.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Absolutely. And anyone who finds them 'dull', check out everything before the soft bulletin. You may not like it, but if you think it's dull, you've got problems. I've never felt happier after a gig than after the first time I saw the lips.

Re: The Flaming Lips

i bought 'yoshimi battles the pink robots' in the hmv sale, and love it. Its a really great album, it has put me to sleep on several (intended) occasions! :)

Re: The Flaming Lips

I can understand that - listen to their earlier stuff and you'll be amazed it's the same band. Similar gorgeous noise-beauty trajectory to mercury rev. Having said that, I think I prefer the noise...

Re: The Flaming Lips

i enjoy this band a lot and are the only band bar granddady who do the 'I can't sing but try to be like neil young' voice - excellent band - A Spoonful Weighs a Ton is their best song by far and GLasto 2000 was epiphanic

some early stuff is ok though however Zaireeka is taking it a bit too far in terms of concept

Re: The Flaming Lips

It's one for special occassions, but it is also rather fantastic in it's own right.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Just thought I'd add a bit more big love for the Lips...brilliant in every way.

Re: The Flaming Lips

ok that means party at yours then - let's all bring a CD each then, a bottle of Magners and our fave pictures of Brainers and then tick into their 'difficult' album

I do find it funny when people think the Soft Bulletin is their first album - i.e parents and uncles trying to be trendy and messing it all up

Re: The Flaming Lips

Clouds Taste Metallic is great too innit/
Zaireeka party WILL happen.
You coming Mr. Prole?
I don't think it's 'too far' - I don't think there is such a thing as too far. But there's way too much "not far enough" around.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Some days I love the Flaming Lips and other days I don't. I gave them 4 and half stars on my profile and although I've been tempted to change it in the past, I'm sticking with it. I've not heard Zaireeka though, bit sceptical myself.

Re: The Flaming Lips

yeah have only just 'got' CloudsTaste Metallic - I got it on tape about 6 years ago and re-bought it on cd for a fiver and for some rreason it makes sense now

yes - Zaireeka party! Next Week??? LEts get MArk O Feller down for it!

Re: The Flaming Lips

Can I come to your Zaireeka party. I don't trust SCL's judgement on this one and would like an induction. I'll bring treats.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Phew.....I was worried that I'd humorously mis-spelt treats then for a second.

Re: The Flaming Lips

yes you are in the postcode catchment area so all aboard!!

SCL loves the Kaiser Chefs (why why why??) so trust me on this one!!!!

Re: The Flaming Lips

Maybe I should change my username to Prole Art Treat

Re: The Flaming Lips

What sort of treats?

Re: The Flaming Lips

Booze.

Re: The Flaming Lips

That's my favourite kind of treat.

Re: The Flaming Lips

Priest Driven Ambulance's my Fav

Re: The Flaming Lips

Don't be sceptical about the 'Lips :(
Didn't the thing with the blood and the hand puppets work on you?

Re: The Flaming Lips

I have listened to some of Zaireeka with three going, because they were on some B-sides from the Soft Bulletin singles, it sounds really good. I'll be looking forward to this. We need mr QC to provide the quadrophonic music though. When are ya free Henry?

Re: The Flaming Lips

WHenever next week, friday would be perfect as I am seeing hot snakes/ted leo on the thursday. If anyone else has a copy, it would be cool to try it with 8 cd's

Re: The Flaming Lips

Friday's good for me...

Re: The Flaming Lips

Remember this thread?

Well its back!

Re: The Flaming Lips

OK. I think Clouds Taste Metallic is uber great. This thread actually prompted me to listen to a '84 to '90s best of thing (that Coyne preferred giving a psychedellic favor title) and it was as Coyne called it, an interesting but unremarkable set of tunes by some mediocre musicians. Therefore, I'd like to amend my previous statement. FL very early work only hints at the genius yet to come circa Soft Bulletin. FL very recent work is still a bit to avant garde for me. Highly recommend CTM. It even edges out the Hold Steady for best song titles ever. Talk about an acid trip!

Erm, remember you asked for this hollywood freak. :-)
