After looking at people's ratings alot of people seem to either think Third's a bad album (5) average (7.5) or great (8/9) (Maybe just from me.) I think it's werid people have mixed opinions about this album, I think it's because it might be a bit difficult or just preference, but you could dislike an album and know it's good but there are some who say whatever they dislike it's crap so... I'm not forcing my opinion on anybody, just curious what you have to say. I'll give my opinions by replying because I'm lazy.
It's actually
A really good album- I don't like potishead yet think it's very listenable and smooth and works well as an album. However, I am busy listening to the best thing I've heard for about six months. http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/3797346
i dunno man,
there's just something about it that puts me off slightly.. i gave it a 7.5..i think some tracks are excellent (the rip, we carry on, machine gun) but the overall tone of the album becomes a bit oppressive. the last three tracks are particularly problematic, they just seem to bleed into one not-particularly-great track. i honestly wanted to love this album, i loved dummy, but i think people are getting a bit carried away and overpraising it a bit. we'll see how people view it a year down the line. i'm not being smart or anything, but just because an album is difficult doesn't necessarily make it great.
Well when an album's difficult
but ultimately rewarding, it's notable. Being oppressive? What do you mean?...I think this does supply an atmosphere that's a bit uneasy, it might make some people uncomfortable, but I think that's it's edge and ultimately makes it wonderful. I'm starting to think it might be a love it or hate type thing.
but i'm in between love and hate!
a lot of my favourite albums have an uneasy atmosphere (closer, mezzanine, disintegration) and in the case of those albums it's part of their edge, as you say. i guess we just differ on this one. i just don't think a lot of the tracks are strong enough.
I think your right.
But I think the last three don't seem so strong, in defense I usually don't pay attention to the last tracks as much and I tend to listen to the early tracks more frequently...But I think the stlye, creativity, tone and atmosphere set this album to a 8/9 to me. I haven't heard many albums that accomplish this effect or experience, but they're probably out there. I think not loving an album like this is probably the equivalent of hating it...you know?
" Dunno Man"
I think when we say this it means we are uncertain and have yet to feel a personal connection. I usually search up the lyrics or see live performances to further attempt a connection, it's sometimes easier to see where an album comes from and it's purpose. Doing this with OK Computer turned it to an ok album to a landmark, it now holds a close place in my musical heart. I guess sometimes atmospheres and words don't really click in certain points in our lifes. Sorta like the difference about hearing about rock climbing and rock climbing, after you've experienced it, a rock climbing story means so much more. We tend to pedestal albums that we feel close to, and shun what we can't relate to or comprehend...something that prevents barriers to be broken and restricts our lives.
na..
doesn't mean i'm uncertain, it just means that it's hard to put into words exactly what puts me off about the album. i'm sure i'll listen to it a few more times yet, will let ye know if my opinion changes. i'm glad u started this thread though, cos the reception of the album has been bothering me as well, but for different reasons.
As guess that's a safe, fair, satisfying answer.
So far it's three people. :( I was a bit excited to see what others seemed to think of it, just to reflect and strengthen my opinion. Everyone else probably feels uncertain as well about this album and is probably why there arn't many replies. I'll be happy to see this album brought up later in the future. "It's hard to put into words exactly what puts me off about the album" Sounds like uncertainty to me. :) I might be wrong.
resurrect it tomorrow.
it should get plenty of replies off the day shift.
:)
I like how you said that, it makes alot of sense. I will. ^_^
This is a pointless thread.
Some people like it, some people don't. You've probably noticed that this happens a lot in life.
Imagine if everyone agreed with you all the time? Pretty annoying right?
For my two cents worth, I think the Portishead album has some songs on it some people may like and also, etc.
I think what you're generally getting at here is your annoyance that albums you like are not regarded as awesome by people who don't "get it", you would prefer them to almost bow in front of you in awe rather than have their own opinion. Which they may force on you, which is no fun for sure.
So in summary, what the fuck does it matter what other people think of your taste?
Wow, cheery start today huh?
Bowl Me Over
Wow. This is a staggeringly pointless reply.
People have other opinions, deal with it, get over it but under no circumstances try to find out what they are. Maybe we should limit replies to series of lists of bands.
He wasn't asking what people thought of his taste, he was asking what people thought. Like. As if this was some sort of forum for the exchange of ideas and opinions.
Some people are curious about other perspectives, some people are not. You've probably noticed that this happen... no, scrap that.

What exactly is the point of the music board then?
He wasn't saying that people are wrong for thinking one way or another. It's just a thread designed to discuss an album, music is sunjective but it's nice to see what other people think.
I think it was more the tone of his thread
to be honest:
"I think it's werid people have mixed opinions about this album"
Weird how?
That's just how it is.
And is also the reason we have music boards.
That's why I thought it was pointless thread.
But you're right, I am full of shit.
^
Someone skipped their weetabix this morning.
Eggy!
It's Rare or "Werid"
When someone thinks a album is utter trash or utter genuis...(exaggeration) It's interesting, and I'm curious why. I also should mention I thought 6/7 was average. If we didn't take account everyones opinion talking would be pointless...It's a discussion.
how odd I was thinking of starting a thread about third myself this morning...and here it is
I listened to it twice last night and I'm still undecided. There are some great moments, machine gun and the rip are obviously brilliant, and I love deep water despite the fact that it sounds like portishead doing 'surf' and sits very bizarly in the context of the rest of the album...I think lyrically its excellent.
I think my main issue with the album as a whole is that it lacks the emotional impact that previous portishead albums had...I appreciate the abstract experimentation but where's the heart? And I think the production does absolutely nothing for Beth's voice...which is so frustrating cos its the bands strongest asset.
I don't think it's either.
*bows and exits*
its
a fantastic album. I cant find anything that i dont like about it.
Median Opinions
I thought we'd agreed that average was five. When did this whole anything less than a six is a kick in the teeth rating system? It's like, a societal thing. Is it genuinely because we see mediocrity as an weakness and if so, aren't the rating given with that taken into account.
Hmm. Completely off topic.
Portishead are an amazing act with a nigh unimpeachable legacy. Which meant that Relief Alone would add a point onto the rating for Third if it turned out to be good. I thought it was a really good album that managed to be A Portishead Album while also taking the band into New Sonic Territories.
It's not as good as Dummy but when you consider the difference between Mezzanine and 100 Broken Windows or whatever, it's like the second coming of the messiah.
As a completely stand alone thing by a new band there's a chance I wouldn't like it quite as much but it'd still be a great album, for my money.
_
good point.
5 should really denote average, but people tend to think that if an album gets a 7 that means its average and if it gets a 5 then its an abomination. but i suppose we just to demand better standards because there's such an overwhelming amount of new music out there. i wouldn't want to spend my hard-earned money on an album if i thought it was a 7 out of 10 effort
I blame championship manager
with it's player ratings, where 7 was deemed to be par/average
Number Game
I guess it depends on the baseline. Like, on this site there's a certain standard before you come in the door. So, in theory, five should be the average of what DiS would allow, not the general average of the world.
That's not much how it works, though. Which is why I tend not to use number ratings. You tend to end up writing Out Of Ten but actually doing it out of twenty (7.5), out of forty (7.75) or, y'know, pretty much just a percentage (7.7). I guess its pretty arbitrary.
One thing I will give to Pitchfork, though, is that I do think of their 6 as being 'above average'. They define their rating system quite well.
_
I liked it more than I thought I would
But it's still pretty avrage.
^ agree with Jimi
had great expectations but this album is seriously average. The Emperor's clothes analogy springs to mind...
^^^
no. bad. wrong.
Average?
You must listen to hella good music.
maybe its aove avrage
but not but much, 6 or 7/10 I think, but then I haven't had it long or got into it very much at all.
Morose
For my money, excuse me here, but Portishead are basically rubbish. They barely know their way around a tune, and that Geoff bloke's production style has been done a million times before, a million times better. Dummy sounded really fresh because of a few excellent choices of samples. But once they decided to ditch the samples on Portishead, they were revealed as the one dimensional misery machine they really were. Note: I am aware this is a rather extreme personal point of view. And I really do like Dummy.
I would be in the great camp 9/10
Wasn't really into their previous stuff, but this just brilliant. Some excellent songs and really well put together (We carry On followed by Deep Water the Machine gun) and a good mix of styles. It is a pretty dark album but I think that works well. I'd say it is probably the only really great album (I've heard) released this year.
album of the year
i reckon. it's just so dark and sketchy. and i love the production.
easily
album of the year for me, in fact it's one of my albums of the decade, and I can no longer bear to listen to it. Although there are a few tracks which aren't particularly good - the second and third IIRC - the good songs are SO good, and the dizzying sense of terror at the end, makes it an incredibly intense listening experience, IMO.
I love Dummy and PH, but for me Third is their greatest album.
I like it
We Carry On sounds like Silver Apples. But better.
are we talking about big star here or what?
i think it's Soft Machine
Machine Gun is probably my favourite song of the year
so different from anything else, it's so heavy and crunchy and industrial, and yet i find it endlessly listenable. We carry on reminds me of a Angel by Massive Attack (in a tension/release way) without sounding in anyway similar or derivative not to angel, but to anything. I think the album is brilliant, deserved to be on the mercury short list, I'm shocked it wasnt.
So Everyone
Either thinks it's average or a fantastic and one just "trashing" the band. No real in-depth feedback, but I guess much can't be said.
Here's some in depth feedback
Without the samples which underpinned Dummy, Third is the sound of a fairly good pub folk singer and a man trying unsuccessfully to recreate his, admittedly excellent, record collection.
I guess the only reason I like Third is....
I'm a bit ashamed to say this, I never heard any previous Portishead albums & I have no idea what's in that man's record collection.
