The Innocence of Childhood...

...I was brought up catholic and can remember having to go to confession at junior school during lunch break. I had to go along to a classroom where there was just the priest there waiting to hear my sins. He would be sat on a chair with legs open and I had to kneel in between his legs with my head bowed and confess my naughty deeds. Looking back on it now I realise how dodgy that actually seemed but as a child you don't think of these things.

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

I thought you weren't meant to be able to see the priest in confesison - that anonymity was the point?

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

Yeah, this was back in the early 80's so I don't know whether it was different back then or whether that rule applied to adults only and children weren't entitled to their privacy!

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

Nah, we had the same sort of thing in the early '90s (less dodgy though - we'd just talk to him face to face, and it was in the church rather than school). Some places just don't have the booths, I guess. Or maybe it's just a kiddie version. I've never done adult confession.

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

Start now! Trun this thread into a confiessional. Come child, what would you like to own up to...

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

You're clearly drunk, Priest Bamos. I csat teeh out!

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

Forgive me Father but I have sinned and your trousers smell like piss!

*ah memories*

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

For a priest sitting in a school classroom, piss is relatively harmless.

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

You've got a point there!

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

isnt this something you should talk to a psychologist about?

I went to a catholic school as well but have no issues apart from overwhelming guilt and a tendency to cross myself - they call it Roman Fever in the low churches you know

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

I went to a catholic primary school for 3 years, but never knew Hail Mary properly - I can do the first few lines and then I disintegrated into murmur

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

something about 'at the hour of our death amen' - what a sing a long eh?

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

hmmmmm

the head teacher was mad too. We weren't allowed to clap our hands properly, we could only put two fingers together and tap them on the opposite hand....it was 'too noisy' apparently

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

our teachers were horrible bar the headmaster and one day he gave me and a friend some money for helping the caretaker with some milk bottles and when we came back into the classroom jangling the money in our hands in a Lordly fashion she asked us where we got it from and then said in her angriest Irish accent: "If that had been me Oi'd have given you NOTHING! You'd burn in hell for less!" charming.

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

It hasn't affected me really.

Secondary school was worse, we had this horrible nun for a headmistress who used to go off it if we weren't walking up and downstairs on the right hand side. I remember getting a slap on the back of the head a couple of times if I was on the left side. Once my arm got broken during morning break and she insisted there was nothing wrong even though it had swelled up 3 times its size. So I had to stay at school like that all day cos she wouldn't ring my mum! My mum went to see her the next day and gave her a good bollocking. Some parents had even physically attacked her! Shes dead now!

Re: The Innocence of Childhood...

Jesus Christ even the Drill instructors at my school (which I have to return to in just a few hours) arnt that bad. How does this lady find a job in the church? If only Jesus knew who he had working for him
