Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

I know that we all love the heavy guitars and the bashing of the drum skins but i've really been try to take in some laid back acoustic tunes for a more laid back vibe, I've not so long ago come across an album from a guy called Pete Murray called feeler, I'm lovin it and I beleive he's relasing something new in the not so distant future, anyone any other suggestions for my ears to take in so I can sit back ang light up and kick into maximum relaximum....suggestion on a postcard please

        • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

the first woodbine album 'woodbine' is really nice chilled acoustic/lo-fi stuff with the odd electronic burble here and there. i'm liking it lots at the moment.
        • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

either/or is my favourite elliott smith album. jose gonzalez is pretty good too and i'd also recommend some laura veirs.
  • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

    Elliott Smith and Rocky Votolato.
  • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

      • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

        Leonarad Cohen, Rachel Dadd.
        • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

Check out these songs by Sufjan Stevens:

          John Wayne Gacy Jr
A Good Man is Hard to Find
          Holland
          To be Alone With You
  • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

    Smog (the newest album)
    M Ward (some of it)
    • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

      Adem too.
  • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

Give Bonny Prince Billy's "ease on down the road" a try followed by Nick Drake's "pink Moon"
    • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

      tom mcrae
      • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

I really don't have a clue where to start so I'll just say John Fahey as he's what comes to mind first. This is for some reason harder to respond to than even all those "best album ever ever" posts.
        • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

Oh, and I wonder if all those people who love John Wayne Gacy Jr by Sufjan so much realise how clever, creepy and strange the song is. Still Godly though. Actually, probably more Godly because of it.
          • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

            Adam Green
            • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

              thomas dybdahl is awesomely talented
              • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

                Neutral Milk Hotel
                Red House Painters
                • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

Yeah, it's all about NMH. "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" = awe, wonder and humanity compressed into 40 minutes of CD.
                  • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

It's Jo and Danny. New album is really good.
                    • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

adem's aldem is really good, one of my faves from last year
                    • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

Neutral Milk Hotel, Belle And Sebastian, Six Organs, Elliott Smith, Joanna Newsom, Wind In The Wires Era Patrick Wolf, Sufjan Stevens, Chris T-T
                      • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

B&S and Nick Drake kinda go without saying. Smog (with or without parentheses) has done some really nice acoustic stuff. But nobody has mentioned kings of convenience, who I'm not ashamed to admit to liking. The first album more than the 2nd.

                        And of course, Devendra Banhart.
        • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

Also if you like John Fahey try Pullman's 'turnstyles and junkpiles' which is an instrumental acoustic album very warm, chilled and well made songs feat. D. Pajo which is always a good sign.
  • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

    fionn regan
    howie day
    magnet
    kings of convenience (beautiful!)
    denison witmer
    • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

Xiu Xiu do some brilliant accoustic stuff.
      • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

        I forgot Pooka.
        They were great.
        • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

          Six Organs Of Admittance
          Gravenhurst
          Iron & Wine
          Devendra Banhart
          Adem

          All delightful.
          • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

The Shins' 'Chutes Too Narrrow' is alovely album, while I also really like 'These Acid Stars' by J Xaverre, its mainly acoustic but its sprinkled with some really twinkly electronica as well.
            • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

I'll third Kings of Convenience, quiet is the new loud was a lovely, lovely album, but riot on an empty street is truly beautiful
              • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

                yeah - I like Iron & Wine
  • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

One AM Radio 'a name writ in water'. An acoustic record with some tastful strings and electronic flourishes and beats. Its great, check out their pitchfork review if you dont believe me.

    • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

Wind In The Wires is very non acoustic isn't it though.

I concur on Smith and NMH. Viers album sounds quite good. Final Fantasy should be heard.
      • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

        Try some Bert Jansch
        or James Taylor

  • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

James Yorkston & The Atheletes, Nina Nastasia, Nick Drake, maybe a bit of cheesy old Beth Orton or something.
    • Re: Best (generally) accoutic musician/band etc

Anyone on here into this kind of stuff should try to get a hold of some Leo Kottke. His Burnt Lips album is an ideal place to start.
