Oh yeah, forgot about Illinois. Scrub 'Demons', get that instead. Brilliant record. Definitely get 'Inches' by Les Savy Fav though if you can, if you don't know them already (and looking at your profile) I guarantee you will love that record.
Envelopes make some nice quirky indie rock. Think Devo + Pavement + The Pastels + Belle & Sebastian + Stereolab.
Illinois by Sufjan Stevens is either quite folky rootsy type stuff with acoustic guitar & banjo, or quite uptempo horns & strings indie folky rock. Really fucking good. Lots of nice hooks and melody.
Les Savy Fav = Loud, riffy, arty, punk indie rock with great lyrics. Bit of electronic stuff thrown in with their later stuff. A little bit like atd-i but much much better.
i don't like that sufjan stevens album so i'd say don't get that. that's all, i found it massively dissapointing but alas no actual recommendations as i haven't bought anything for a little while
i went for envelopes and sufjan stevens in the end, though i have made a note of the other suggestions and will probably be looking at a couple of them later on in the month.

Best of i think. Gothic Folk type stuff from a person from Psychic TV.
"I would simply say: he is the most elegant writer alive" - Devendra Banhart.
"Current 93 exists as the eye of a slutary storm; one that yields fear from fear, awe from awe and love from love." - Will Oldham

The Books - Lost and Safe.
Really mellow indie/electronica. Lots of samples, soft vocals and clever arrangements.
Jesu - Jesu.
Shoegazing, death metal style. Hard-work, but incredibly rewarding.
Roisin Murphy - Ruby Blue.
She wipes the floor with Goldfrapp. Not instantly accessible, but a real grower.
Re: what should i buy?
the books sounds interesting. i'll definitely consider that if the availability/price is right.
is roisin murphy the woman from moloko?
