Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Come on then people, let's hear your stories, highs/lows, best/worst, surprises/disappointments from the Carling festival.

I'll stat with mine (I was at Leeds) -

Disappointments -
* Alkaline Trio got the weekend off to a slightly limping start. The sound was poor and their concentration seemed off with both singers constantly missing their marks. Not terrible by any means but a definite disappointment.
* I missed My Chemical Romance.
* Wading through thousands of idiots maiking their way to watch Kasabian whilst one of the most important bands in rock history, the Pixies had one of the worst main act crowds i've ever seen at a festival. Shame on you all, really, shame.
* Pretty much same goes for the Wedding Present - shit turnout, great set.
* Futureheads - your songs are already only 2 mins long, why do you have to play them too fast. Drummer, do your job son! Good though :)
* Missed Yourcodenameis:milo
* Million Dead - vocals way too quiet.
* 65daysofstatic on the 'unsigned' stage. It would seem they'd been told to keep it down cos it was stupidly quiet. This band needs to be LOUD.
* Death from Above 1979 - got really boring really quickly. They have some good songs on cd but it all sounds exactly the same live.
* The Kills. My god, pass me a pillow! Two songs played off their vastly superior debut and an annoying soporific backing track - not great.

Surprises -
* Really enjoyed Maximo Park having not done so the first time i saw them a while back.
* Charlotte Hatherly was fantastic. Great cheery pop that put a smile on everyone's face. It helps that she's extremely easy on the eye.
* Youth Group - nice stuff, not gonna set the world alight but good festival fodder.
* Clor - took a while to get into the album but they're miles better live, really enjoyed this one.

Best -
* Funeral For A Friend - for once they didn't play too loud. A good sing along for the main stage.
* GLC - whatever you feel about these guys, in half an hour bursts playing on a sunny day, they get credit for making people laugh.
* Elbow - Newborn - it doesn't get much better than that.
* Pixies, Wedding Present and QOTSA - great sets.
* Biffy Clyro - one of the acts of the weekend. I wasn't sure if they'd take to the main stage but they were awesome.
* On the NME stage LCD Soundsystem, British Sea Power, Maximo Park, Subways, Editors all put on great shows, especially Editors.
* Act of the weekend though - ARCADE FIRE. Was there ever any doubt? A M A Z I N G. Really good to see them get a huge crowd too, one of the weekend's biggest in the NME tent.

Worst -
Hardly anything bad to say at all. I saw no bands I didn't like. Although when trying to check out Arctic Monkeys who I'd heard a lot about, the Carling stage was rammed, so I had a quick listen from outside - cack. Utter cack.
My knees are pretty much screwed now too. I'm too old for this shit

  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Next year. I'll be there (with my daughter!!! - yes I'm too old for that shit too, but don't let that stop us).

The first Reading I ever went to?
Was it 1989? I remember watching Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine doing their Isn't Anything set.
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

There are still tickets selling on ebay. Anyone wanna go?
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Yes! Let's hear more of this. How were the Stooges? Saul Williams? Yada yada yada. Did anyone meet anyone from here?

I couldn't afford to go and am jealous.
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I got back, like, an hour ago. I was going to do a long post, but all that needs to be said is Pixies were absolutely fucking amazing and I will never forget their set EVER. Anyone who left to see Kasabian deserves to have LOSER branded onto their forehead with hot irons. They were so good I actually cried at the end. I might go to sleep now, I think I'm still mildly beveraged after last night.
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I could but didn't. Damn it...
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

saul williams was really wonderful. i'm very bitter about the stooges though, because they came on early and so i missed tv eye. gnash.
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

surprises? howabout the surprisingly small crowd for tha pixies at reading...?
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

      What did the pixies play?
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I'm seeing them on Wednesday. I have my fingers crossed for Velouria, Tame & Monkey's Gone to Heaven.
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

This is not in the right order but...

        Wave of Mutilation
        Monkey's gone to heaven
        Gigantic
        Bone Machine
        Where is my mind
        Here comes your man
        Cactus
        Isla de Encanta

I don't have all the albums and so don't know all the titles of the songs. But it was all amazing.
        • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Yup im going on wednesday too.

I dont mind what they play as long as they play Hey.
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Yeah, I couldn't beleive how small the croud was for Reading Pixies. They were so. fucking. amazing. Gigantic at the end was superb, I didn't want them to ever stop playing; I wish I could see them again.

Arcade Fire were absolutely immense - the sound was hit and miss on most stages through the weekend but it really was spot on for them.

Rakes was ace because the singer was ill so they had a few guest vocalists (the guy from Towers and Maximo Park included) although to be honest, the guitarists voice was very good.

Towers of London were good fun, but nothing compared to Art Brut who were on before them - what a fucking great show!
Other good bands: QOTSA, Wedding Present, Maiden, BRMC, Subways, DFA1979, Kills, Nine Black Alps, M.I.A, Go Team, Be Your Own Pet, Komakino

Most annoying clash: Art Brut vs Forward Russia

Funniest thing I've ever heard: waking up on Saturday to hear some idiot in the tent behind me mispronounce 'Art Brut' and then hear him argue with his mate about Brut not having an 'E' on the end. Twat.
            • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I liked Komakino, they dedicated one of their songs to Sean, which was quite cute.

I hope you went to see forward russia. :)
              • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

*runs away without answering the question*
            • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

My two cents... (leeds for me)

              Good things-
Arcade Fire, of course.. just brilliant in every way.. and getting to get a handful of Win is always a plus.

Blood Brothers we're immense, although it was definetly a danger to your health if you were closer than 10 people away from the barrier (which i was).

Amusement Parks on Fire, hearing venus in cancer was probably my highlight of the entire weekend.

Getting told to fuck off by testicicles and their 'fans' while leaving in fits of giggles...

              Bad things-
Echo's voice, Excellent for the first song and then descended into nasality.

Having to listen to the black velvets to get a good spot for yourcodenameis:milo, who were then crap too.

Being disapointed by Komakino while being danced on by someone at least 20 stone.

Saul's sound being poor, otherwise he was brilliant.

              Funniest thing-
Seeing somebody talking to his friends through a megaphone viciously attacked by a tuna can wielding maniac who proceeded to destroy the megaphone.

And if anyone went through the torment of seeing kasabian... did they really play a patrick wolf cover or was that just a horrible horrible horrible rumour??

          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

            Stooges were fan-fucking-tastic!

Queens were aight, Pixies were good but it wasn't AMAZING like I'd hoped. But the two Brixton gigs were so meh.

Elbow - I'm converted. They were always one of those bands I liked a bit of but never paid attention to much but they were one of my top 5 performances all weekend.

Ditto Echo and The Bunnymen actually. Ian came out in shades, smoking and went "turn the lights down" then drop-kicked his cigaratte. Cool mofo. *curses self for not talking more to that pritty girl in a Joy Division top afterwards*

Coxon - good-good. Only caught the end. *curses self for not approaching pritty girl who kept smiling at me* :( Maybe I just had something on my face actually...

Wedding Present were great, and they had a group of 40 year old fans who were moshing, hah.

What else? Erm. Saul Williams - genius. Dinosaur JR - rather good. LCD Soundsystem - bloody genius again. Much better live than on record.

            Cribs were alright...

The Rakes minus the singer plus the Maximo Park guy, two guys out of Bloc Party and THE TOWERS OF LONDON were actually pretty good. Coral - okie.

            Roots Manuva - genius

DFA - Fucking radio one and its shit sound! Actually I've seen DFA 3 times now and the sound has always been shit... Hmm.

            Kills - meh/aight

            Bad Religion - meh

            Hot Chip - good

            MIA - okeley dokely

            Youth Group - aight

            YCNIM - meh

            Adam Green - entertaining

Sleater-Kinney - only caight the end - aight

            Blackalicious - Marvellous

Sons and Daughters - rather good, but I had to leave after 20mins to see Buck 65.

            Buck 65 - good good.

Turbonegro - got a bit tired after 3 songs...

            The Coral - aight.

The Arcade Fire. Hmm... I went expecting to come away from it saying "OMG BEST FING EVAH" but I wasn't overly impressed. I think it may have been down to the fucking atrocious sound in the Radio One tent and the fact that a load of wankers were pushing and I kept getting crushed. I'll reserve judgement till I see them somewhere better.

So top 5 is.... Elbow, LCD Soundsystem, Saul Williams, Echo and The Bunnymen and Roots Manuva. Why am

Ooh I saw whats-her-face from here! Twice! But not naked (I 'missed' Art Brut actually)
            • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

"Pixies were good but it wasn't AMAZING like I'd hoped."

              Wtfufggfu! Shfughthoithhn! Hfteyfgbkjrhj! You're crazy.

I agree with you about the crowd at Arcade Fire though (were you at Leeds?) Arcade Fire were brilliant I thought, but I didn't expect the crowd to be full of such utter wankers.
              • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Just wondering if anyone on here went and saw fightstar? heard that they had a few bottles thrown at them, was wondering how bad it was.

The Roger Sister's and the Blood Arm were both really entertaining, as were test icicles.

                • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Oh yeah the Roger's Sisters were pretty good too - I'd forgotten I'd seen them.

Plus I thought the Longcut were amazing too, need to buy some of there stuff right away...
                  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

                    *their
                • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I was walking past the nme tent while fightstar were on and there were definetly things being thrown in charlie's direction.
                • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I overheard someone say there were a few blokes down the front with a buket full of bottles, don't know how bad it was though, that was at Reading
              • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

                I was at Reading...

It just wasn't.....OMFGMGMGMGMGM amazing (Pixies) It was a very good set, but it felt like I dunno. I enjoyed the fact they actually spoke to the audience for once though. The Brixton gigs were more "wowzers!"
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I was right at the front for the pixies, I was so injured by the end..people pushing all the bloody time. Kim Deal, er smile, ohhhhh could I love them anymore.
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Was a small crowd at Leeds too. Less than Queens of Mazza. Was very weird. I felt like i was dancing whilst everyone else had ran off to watch a televised attack or something. Was spooky.
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I gather there were idiots rioting in Leeds again.

I'll post up my Reading highlights later (as I don't have the laminate to hand)
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Oh yes, we had all the loveliest people who set tents on fire and try and blow themselves up...
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

        Highlights (Reading)

        British Sea Power
        Arcade Fire
        Pixies
        Adam Green
        The Coral (surprisingly good)

        Lowlights

Missing the National and Art Brut
Sound during Death From Above was awful
        • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

oh, re: Pixies set, at Reading they also played some treats - In Heaven, Caribou, Broken Face and the best, Into The White, Kim's red jumper was just lovely
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

The full set is here :) Look at it, I mean LOOK at it!

            http://www.nmefestivals.com/carling_weekend_-_reading_festival/news/113510
        • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Highlight - Audiobullys set, I was already hyper due to the dj spinning No Good (start the dance) just before simon and tom came out

Surprise - Kano, maaaan, i thort he would be alrite, and when he came out late I was pissed off, but he won me over straight away, more energy than i thort he had, set also contained the my favourite 8 lines of lyrics in music history.

The rakes, were kinda poor, nothing exciting, 22 grand job went well, otherwise i was bored

Thank You M.I.A. for gettin the women on the stage for your performance oh my....

I lost my glasses in hot hot heat, enojyed maximo park like a gay, and thort dfa were cool

          Barcardi B-bar is great

          Best Song: 'New Boy Bryce'

and final before MIA the dj played the high contrast remix of has it come to this? thats fucking reading mans mind
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

So two of the biggest arses in NME championed music got caught up in an altercation at Leeds. Jonny Borrell and everyones favourite-Pete Doherty. One day they will die. What odds for Pete to pop it first?
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Why did they put the unsigned tent right inbetween two sets of dodgems (at Leeds), which played fucking trance albums at a louder volume than most of the bands which played? I would have enjoyed iliketrains' set far more if I could have heard it.

And I think the 'crowdful of wankers' at Arcade Fire as mentioned above is because Razorlight finished halfway through their set and the entire northern readership of NME then descended on the NME tent to get as close as they could to Babyshambles.

Highlight of the weekend was Arcade Fire, first time I've seen them live, suddenly all the praise makes sense.
            • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

              I was at Reading.

              The Vey Best:
coming up for Aracde Fire was mindblowing, and clearly the best band of the weekend

              Other Fullerov highlights:

*Pixies: I didn't think the crowd was that small, even if it was who cares? That rotund man is playing Monkey's Gone To Heaven!
*The Blood Arm were pretty amusing, i LOVED the introductory story!
              * The Killers. Yah Boo to you lot, sometimes the public are right about a band, and they are right about this one.
*NOFX. Being in the pit was fun...

The following bands also were good:
              * QOTSA
              * Nine Black Alps
              * Dinsoaur jr
              * Alkaline Trio (despite me missing Time to Waste)
              * Fightstar. I decided to give them a shot. Charlie hit my bottle in the face, the instant the 1st song starts. I laugh heartily. He recovers and plays an okayish set
              * British Sea Power
              * Incubus
              * Marylin Manson
              * From Autumn to Ashes
              * Kings of Leon
              * Foo Fighters: espcially the sstripped back version of Everlong
              * Yourcodenameis: milo

              The not so good:

              * My Chemical Romance: The sound was poor and Way's voice was utterly shot.

              The very bad:
              * Missing Hatebreed, Bad Religion, Emanuel, Iggy and the Stooges
              * The All American Rejects. Why the hell did i watch them

I also met Bamos (which was good) and probably destroyed my friendship with one of my best friends (not so good, and definately my fault)
              • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Went to Leeds and it was brilliant.......

Highlights: The Arcade Fire - best set of the festival, absolutely amazing, sung my head off along with the rest of the crowd. No Cars go was superb but Wake Up and Power Out had to be the best.

                QOTSA: excellent, dominated the stage.

BRMC: first time I've seen em and they're one of my fave bands and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest even though they had technical problems.

Sons and Daughters: Frantic with added mandolins.

The rakes - v.good and the guitarist sounded exactly like the lead singer!

The Kills: Went to see them because my girlfriend likes them and they were fuckin cool and sexy.

The Blood arm: first time I've been part of a mass sit down in a gig.

Adam Green: completely oput of place but great, especially the bunny hop dance.

                Disappointments:

Echo and the bunnymen: Killing Moon and The Cutter were great but everything else was a little boring. Covering Lou Reed seemed out of place for a bona fide legendary band.

No free stuff: I missed my cans of lipton ice tea.

The riot was a little pointless on sunday night though, but was rather exciting - plus got a good picture :-p
                • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

The National were brilliant (I was at Reading) - the singer put so much into the performance that I thought he might pass out near the end. Tunes upon tunes too.
                  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

anyone catch Mylo? A 20 Minute Drop The Pressure, only to step out of the tent to the intro of Run To The Hills, then straight off to see Bloc.

                    Best: yourcodenameis:milo/arcade fire/bloc party/blood brothers/emanuel
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

    OK, Reading for me then...

    Friday:

Goldie Lookin Chain - a comedy band that actually manage to be funny. I can't see 'em enough.
Graham Coxon - good fun. The two new ones made it sound like the next album will follow on neatly from the last, so hooray!
    Elbow - Heroes. Love 'em.
Queens Of The Stone Age - top notch.
The Killers - I still can't excited about them. They're just... competent.
Pixies - Don't own anything by them. I now realise what an idiot I am and will ensure I rectify this.

    Saturday:

Editors: I liked them. I don't like Interpol. Someone explain.
The Charlatans: reliable. And unlike most bands at Reading, they're for dancing rather than jumping. So thumbs up.
    Hot Hot Heat: ace.
Arcade Fire: someone's going to say the hype is unjustified eventually. But it won't be me. Band of the festival.
Kings of Leon: much better than I had expected, but I was buying food/ using the loos/ seeing the end of Arcade Fire so didn't really take it in.
Foo Fighters: did everything a band headlining a festival is supposed to do. "In Your Honour" was a bit rubbish - and they only played four songs from it. Plenty from "The Colour And The Shape", one of my favourite albums ever.

    Sunday:

Boy Kill Boy: wasn't really with it by then. Seemed OK. Liked the new single, whatever that's called.
Art Brut: never cared for their records. So was hugely surprised by how entertaining they were.
Towers Of London: hmmm. My opinion of them went up slightly in terms of the fact that they don't just seem to be shocking people for the sake of it, as I had previously thought. But apart from "F*** It Up", lacking in tunes. Which I find important.
The Rakes: gutsy performance of the festival - playing their set without the singer and with guest vocalists at the end. Made a lot of friends that day, I reckon.
    Sons And Daughters: top stuff.
Hal: you've got to be in the right mood for them (a bit laidback for Reading), but I enjoyed them, even if the tent emptied somewhat...
Maximo Park: Paul Smith is odd. Odd people in music is largely a good thing.
Marilyn Manson: ah, spectacle. Sometimes you need spectacle. And "The Fight Song" is good for pumping fists to.
The Futureheads: it's the same set I've seen a billion times, from half-empty pubs to a ridiculously packed tent. Still not bored of it but would have liked more than one new song.
Bloc Party: can't listen to the album too often but they're stunning live.

So, enjoyed it. And getting a hotel was the best thing I ever did!
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

    * MARILYN MANSON - gotta give him some credit just for his stage show
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

"* FUCKING CUNTS - who werent from anywhere near our tents nearly burning down our tents and generally being cunts on the last night ... all the guys and girls camping around us were standing guard over each others tents/stuff so it didn't get burnt"

Jeez - this whole tent burning thing sounds fucking sad. I am so glad that I didn't experience anything like this at Reading...
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

My friend set fire to his tent on the Saturday by accident though... it was so funny I almost cried.
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

the worst part was the girl who was really scared by it all ... then got hit in the head with sharpnel from an exploding gas cansiter , good job there was a security guy there to look after her it looked like she was bleeding pretty badly
        • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Obviously that isn't very nice, but the security guards do tend to make situations worse. Somebody I camped with was sat in the middle of the path when he was a bit drunk (not exactly a fucking crime) and one of the security guards told him he would evict him unless he did twenty press-ups. Another group were watching this and promptly started beating the shit out of each other, I don't really know why but.. there you are. A minor riot followed.
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

the security guards had been cool with us the whole weekend ...
guess the fact that they were apparently almost to a man all ex-army probably meant that they might be a bit heavy handed at times.
            • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Stuart Security... the SS. No coincidence I think.

              Maybe I'm exaggerating a bit.

              :)
              • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

holy fuck, i thought our species was civilised.
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I don't understand why people start destroying things on the last day. 'look i'm a fucking rebel' or something.

Last year this bunch of twats, who seemed to be permanently hanging around by the entrance to one of the car parks, set a load of plastic tables and a sofa on fire. The smoke was awful, thick black and smelt dangerous. The fire services they had there put it out, and the reply was, from the 'fire starters', - "you fuckin hero". As soon as security was gone they started setting fire to more stuff. I don't understand why they weren't thrown out.
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

didn't see any rioting but heard it was going on. Don't know how bad though was a bit of an escalting tale I heard 800 then 2000 then 4000 tents on fire. When I came home however apparently it was on the news about riots in Reading. I just don't understand it such a nice event apart from the end!
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Noone's talked about the saul willaims/ymss collaboration in the cabaret tent I really want to know if/how it happened/worked. Someone tell me please.
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

It was out of this world. YMSS were making these beautiful dripping twilight sounds (something like the bits before Tortoise go spazzy - not enough of a post-rock geek to give a better example) and Saul was talking about the beautiful face in the moon smiling. He kept pausing, not just to compose himself, but to listen to what YMSS were doing.

I think, apart from thisGIRL, Bloc Party, Coopers new stuff and Komakino, it was the highlight of my weekend.
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

        The improvisation was like whoa.

        Highlights:
        Saul x 2
Sleater-Kinney (playing to, like, eight people)
        Dinosaur Jr
        Blood Brothers
        Komakino
        The Cribs
        Roots Manuva
        GLC (really)

        Rubbish:
        Death From Above 1979
Babyshambles (really... it's third-rate pub rock, no?)
        Foo Fighters (destroyed Everlong)
Hearing three seconds of Kasabian by accident
        Missing the Arcade Fire (whooops)
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

    Best surprise: Roots Manuva
Worst Surprise: walking into the river drunk
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I went to Leeds for Saturday -

      Best:
Pixies were astonishing. Quite simply amazing, and I'm going on Wednesday as well :D But the crowd at Leeds was criminally small - about 70% of the Killers' crowd left after them. Fecking teenyboppers.

The Blood Brothers were amazing as ever as well, but mostly stuff from Crimes... I was looking forward to some tunes from March On... And B,PI,B!

      Most Meh:
I enjoyed Graham Coxon but wasn't really in the mood.

The Coral, QOTSA and YCNI:M all were solid as hell, and Saul Williams was also amazing though I got so caught up in people trying to get to see The Killers (eurgh) that I arrived late :(
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Ah, i wish i had been there, wanted to see blood brothers again so badly. Dammit for being skint. Bet DFA1979 were really good as well. gggrrrrr
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

im suprised that no ones mentioned the exploding gas cansters that much, taking that seemed like the main dick-ish activity. its a bit erm when you can feel the vibrations very clearly when they are about 300metres away! and there was loads of it going on, im suprised no one was blown up! it hasnt been mentioned at all in the press.
either way it was a great weekend, dissappointed with the crowds though, they seemed very much swayed towards the bands who are most popular at the moment.
the most charismatic bands i saw were probably art brut and razorlight. although good babyshambles continue to under achieve, petes not putting in what he has done in the past and he's probably pissed off with bernard butler say something that implies that. music wise id say the pixies and sleater kinney were the best, although i would have liked some sleater kinney songs off previous albums. also the first day was a bit slow starting, although i enjoyed glc for comical value (very funny how the crowd will do whatever they asked "hands up reading" *Crowd puts up their hands* "your mothers cock" and then they break into the chorus of your mother has a penis), i kind of didnt see any bands id pay to see until the killers.
the last day was nicely packed rushing from tent to tent, which is the way it should be really.
        • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Gas Canisters are blown up every Reading.

          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

yeah they are but there seemed to be shit loads more this year, it sounded like a war zone on Monday morning
            • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

ahahaha my mother phoned on sunday night, and she didnt know i went to reading cos i went without a ticket and just paid when i got there. She was like, omg where are u, Iraq?? to which i replied "no mother, im at the forum(the local gig venue)". Then some people came along "WHERES WALLY!"ing. my mother still thinks i went to my friends for 3 nights and only went out on sunday, carrying a huge bag.....
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

            what a great weekend

            highlights-
            arcade fire
            kings of leon
            maximo park
            saul williams
            pixies
successfully smoked 1oz of skunk between 6 of us, and was successfully sick twice, and woke up on the floor one night.
unfortunately i was forced to watch a bit of alkaline trio and NOFX.

Was disappointed with Bloc Party, the sound seemed distorted from the back of the tent. i found it quite amusing that some guy was climbing up the metal support for the tent and they stopped playing and said "your ruining it for everyone else, just get down"
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

        DFA were fantastic.
        • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

poor sound, people shoving to get to the front, missing bands you like, not being able to see...all this has reminded me just why I can't be arsed with festivals.
        • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

          Went off to leeds,

          Highlights-

Arcade Fire- Brilliant music and then the percussion player decides hes sick of his cymbol and starts hitting the guitarist- genius
          The Coral-brilliant fun
Arctic Monkeys-second row of an amazingly big crowd and the beginning of Scummy was unbelievable
BSP-A Bear?! Not having seen BSP live before i couldn't believe my eyes!
Graham Coxon- brilliant music, though i was a bit too close to the stage so got mostly bass.

          Disappointments-

The Tears-Worst thing i saw all weekend.
The Duke Spirit- Was waiting for BSP and all i saw was a bunch of posers.

          Surprises-

          Mystery Jets, LCD Soundsystem.

As for the riots, i was one of those on the hill watching and i have to say it was quite exciting watching from afar but at one point i accidently got caught up in the centre and it was scary. The big fire was really interesting to watch but on Monday around 11 there was an explosion like a bomb and a guy in the trees burnt all his face and we were told to get out of there quickly by security because he was "totally out of it" That was scary. Apparently that was only minor disrruption, im glad i'm not there when its high!
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

            Highlights -
ARCADE FIRE - I know, inevitable...Even better than I thought they would be...Moment of the festival was set opener 'Wake Up' as the whole tent erupted into song...Also weird to find that they are the indie Slipknot in terms of onstage foolery...
THE CRIMEA - What planet is Davy Crockett from? The guitarist rocks like prince! This band are seriously underrated. Great album too...

            WORST-
My Chemical Romance were terrible...Worst live vocals I've EVER heard...As were Foo Fighters...The Tears tried their best but suffered through a tired ste and embarrasing turnout...

The Cribs - home win, Nine Black Alps - getting there...Ah fuck, too many pills...entire vocabulary erased...
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Was at reading but didn't post yesterday, and only woke up about an hour ago -

            Highlights -
            * YCNI:M, had seen them twice before and was slightly impressed but this year they really played well and the new songs were excellent.
            * Kano, thought he might be a bit poor but was proved very wrong, could have played for a bit longer though.
            * Editors, didn't sound as much like Joy Division as I had expected. Good stuff.
            * Dinosaur JR, was expecting just poor grunge music from a bunch of tired old men but wow, pure rock and roll, and that Cure cover was great.
            * Go! Team, though they might be good but I wasn't expecting them to be great. If I ever get rich and have a private party, they can do the music. One of the best bands of the weekend.
            * Forward Russia.
            * Turbonegro, absolutely hilarious, but in a good way.
            * Fourtet, WOW, I had thought that maybe one guy on stage would be a bit boring but I was so very very wrong. It was like a private rave in there (but with music better than that present at most raves). Truly fantastic.
            * Iggy & The Stooges - Although the rest of the band looked a bit old and tires old Iggy showed no signs of it, like a one man circus, No Fun was amazing.
            * LCD Soundsystem, guess what? They actually have more songs than the Daft Punk one! Could have done with a bit more differences between the songs but still very good.
            * Iron Maiden, only playing stuff from the first four albums? Boring! Wrong! Noone puts on a show like they do, guitars were flying, flags were waved, zombies walked and every song was just pure unadulterated metal. It didn't matter that I only knew a few of the songs, every one was just as good as the rest, brilliant.

            Dissapointments -
            * Blood Brothers, OK, let's get a few things straight first of all, they are one of my favourite bands and the show at the Underworld was one of the best I've ever been to. But this time, meh. The crowd was pretty poor, the sound was disgraceful, you couldn't hear the singing, and they only played (with one exception) songs of Crimes. A big let down.
            * Dead 60's, clearly they just want to sound like the new Specials. Unfourtunately they just aren't good enought to do it.
            * Raveonettes - I had never heard of them before and I can see why. Very formulaic, and guys, you don't need three guitars if two of them spend the whole gig playing the same thing.
            * Alkaline Trio - YAWN.
            * Rakes, listened from the back because my friend loves them but they were just average average average. Very boring indeed.
            * Biffy Clyro - Dunno what was wrong really, just wasn't as good as I had expected going on the last time I saw them. Oh and the new songs are far too emo.
            * Only seeing the end of Sleater-Kinney, the looked really good.

Highlights (excluding the ones mentioned in suprises) -
            * DJ Format - As always, top notch stuff, featuring one of the best rappers around.
            * QOTSA - great crowd reaction, fantastic solos, played all the hits, can't really fault them.
            * Pixies - I don't think there is anything that I can say about this performance that hasn't already been said. Beyond amazing. Best band of the weekend.
            * Arcade Fire, although the crowd was too pushy and some were just there for babyshambles it was a truly excellent performance, the finale of Power Out and Rebellion was just undescribable.
            * British Sea Power, saw them last year and they were good but this year they were just even better, the new songs fitted in very well and they reaffirmed themselves as one of the best live bands I have ever seen.

I also saw - DFA1979 (good but not as good as I had expected)
            - Roots Manuva (very good)
            - Hot Hot Heat (very fun)
            - VHS Or Beta (pretty average but I hadn't thought they would be anything else)
            - Killers (OK, I only saw them to get to the front for the Pixies, but seriously, how bad can one band be. The songs (excluding Mr Brightside, of course) were abysmal and the band were static. This is what is wrong with modern music.)
            - Buck 65 (started off poorly but got much much better, original rapping that still works very well)

This lot, however, don't really seem to fit in any of the other categories.

Overall, fantastic festival, in which I saw some of my favourite bands, heard new boy bryce and watched countless fires explode. Equally as good as last year and maybe better.
            • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

              Who/what is New Boy Bryce?
              • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

                oh, it's a tune. cool.
                • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Ok, I'll explain, there is an advert for bratz in which there is a cheesy song from a girl doll saying something like "who should I take to the prom, will it be Cody or Trey (not sure about the names) or will it be the new boy bryce". So the people camping opposite us, who had a song, wrote a song about the new boy bryce and it then evolved into us inventing a person called bryce. It might not sound very funny on here but it was hilarious at the time.
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Does anyone know why Maidon played a couple of Sabbath riffs mid-way thru their set? Obviously it had something to do with their feud with that bitch from hell Sharon, but does anyone know what Bruce said when they played it? I had to leave about half an hour early and only heard it from outside the arena.
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

This is from a Reading pov:

    Best
*Arcade Fire were stupendous - utterly brilliant, entertaining on stage too. The dual violins were stunning live, the band interaction delightful, they were great!

They couldn't be topped - not possible - except they were!
*Bloc Party absolutely DESTROYED. How this band manage to improve every time I see them I don't know. Surely it will stop soon. At Reading on final night they were just magical. One of the best Reading performances ever - I just hope somebody has a decent recording of this.

*Maximo Park's set was hugely enjoyable although I wish someone would turn their guitar up. This is the second time I have seen them and the second time a great display was a little tarnished by the lack of loud guitars.

*Clor were crackingly good. I love their cds but live they are six or seven notches better. Their songs are far more aggressive and that CD (recorded in a bedroom wasn't it?) doesn't really do them justice.

    *Arctic Monkeys
They certainly have something (I'm not totally convinced by them I must say) but anyone lucky enough to have got into the tent at Reading would have witnessed history. A lovely moment even if only for the atmosphere. The power of the web is awesome.

*Amusement Parks on Fire were the revelation to me. I thought I knew their cd well but live it was some sort of elongated Spacemen 3 / MBV jam – totally wonderful and a massive treat. Those guitars were the best sounding noise of the Fest!

*The Longcut again (saw them at Camden Crawl) were stunning. Superb guitars.

*Editors were very enjoyable – that guy has an amazing voice (unlike the Longcut guy – they could do with another singer). Like JD? Oh yes (in a good way)

*Be Your Own Pet were another great band – old school punk sort of stuff but fine.

*Pixies were great but some way off the almost religious experience of seeing Arcade Fire and Bloc Party in my book. (I’m old enough to have seen Pixies a great many times in much smaller places when they were always superb)
The crowd was respectable at Reading but far from rammed and I managed to get about three from the front for the Pixies for such an old timer as me – that’s pretty good!

*Rogers Sisters were good – like the b52s on steroids at a punky party.
*Cherubs and Blood Arm too were most entertaining.

*The Rakes – if anyone thinks that the vocalist sounds the same as the guitarist I suggest and immediate trip to the doctors as that ain’t right! The Rakes suffered through not having their singer but full marks to the boys for trying and addition of Paul Smith at the end transformed them and made things feel “special”.

*Komakino were ok – not convinced about their first single or their singer either. They make some impressive sounds though.

    * T Raumschmiere were like a cross between Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein. Excellent – what a revelation for the dance tent – and what I saw of Performance they were good in an 80s keyboard / Ladytron sort of way.

    Worst?

    Dinosaur Jr were shocking.
All guitar solos and just dreadful.

I was most disappointed with DFA 1979 > dullsville.
And I love "difficult" bands but Forward Russia were such heavy going (at 12.35 n Sunday after a double hangover!) and not quite as good as I expected them to be. I expect they will be good in time though.

Iggy was horrible. Tired old rubbish. Seen him a few times at Reading and been pleasantly surprised – this time it was poor.

I love Duke Spirit on cd but live they have always bored me. It happened again at Reading. They were tired.

I didn’t see much Subways – only Rock N Roll queen – and that STANK..

    Missed ‘em

    · Battle clashed minute for minute with Maximo Park. Very disappointing!
    · Ladytron who were also up against Pixies for their entire set.
    · The National when I was forced to watch QOTSA against my better judgement. Stodgey and tired set as expected from the Grohl less stoners.

    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

did anyone else think the sound was fucked alot of the time on the main stage? or was i just fucked?
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

At Reading the wind really caught the sound from halfway back the longer the festival went on.

I know one of my mates thought Marilyn Manson sounded great from the moshpit (rather him than me!)

The Sound was generally excellent in the tents.
Apart from Maximo - but like I said in myposting above - I think that is their own (bizarre!) coice.

I'll give them a third go at Hammy Palais in December when I know I'll enjoy them and Clor no matter what.

        • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

The sound for The Killers was fucking awful at Leeds. People are going to say, "That's because they are shit," but you can tell even with bands you don't particularly like whether the sound is good or not.
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

sound was pretty good for Killers at reading...
          • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

the mainstage sound on sunday at leeds was shit because of the wind ...

i thought the killers had decent enough sound, what they lacked was any personality, charisma, or star quality
  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I was at Leeds and everything paled into insignificance for me after i saw the Arcade Fire. I almost cried they were so good. Only downside was some guy trying to get a spot for Cuntyshambles pushed in front of me right at the end and started talking on his phone!!!

Other highlights were 1/2 Pixies 1/2 Ladytron (boo for them clashing - yay for managing to catch 'Bone Machine' AND 'Seventeen'), Clor, LCD Soundsystem, Graham Coxon (much better than I've seen him for a while), Sleater-Kinney, Foo Fighters and The National (who sounded awesome but sadly I only caught the last 2 songs due to watching QOTSA).

Can't say I saw anyone bad, but heard a bit of Arctic Monkeys who didn't do much for me, steered clear of Razorshambles et al, and wasn't blown away like I thought I'd be by The Kills, they seemed to have a bit of a chip on their shoulder...

Funniest festival moments (x2) for me were:

Two pilled-up guys stumbling past about 1 am on sunday morning as we were watching Dodgeball in the dance tent, looking for where Saul Williams was playing (only missed him by 5 hours boys...)

Witnessing a debate in the press bar abour whether or not Frank Black was in Tenacious D
    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

for inbetween bands i thought the Barcadi Bar was great fun, not sure if i stand alone on that but hey.

steve the pirate in Dodgeball made the film, that and "YOU CALL THAT A SIT-UP!"

anyone catch Ralph Myerz & The Jack Herren Band..having never heard of them before Reading and walking past the dance tent..i had to stop for a glance..fooking brilliant

funniest festival moment, setting up someones elasticated guy rope from our tent across the path to another, at the same time a group of 3 girls and 4 guys walking opposite directions walk through it...7 ppl flat on theyre faces, how we laughed.

the explosions were great to watch from afar only rather scary when walking past unawares
      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Yer the Barcardi Bar was so much fun, cannons or something were djing, with a guy on the drums...that was great.

Forward russia were amazing, as were sleater kinney. I didn't think much of queens of the stoneage, and juliette and the pricks were crap.

I couldn't even get ito the tents to even attempt to see Futureheads or any of them lot. Not that I'm that bothered.

What ruined the festival was an abrupt stop at 12pm. By that time everyone was drunk, hyper with nothing to do. Maybe the organisers should have kept a tent open, as I'm sure less trouble would have happened on the actual campsites.

I thought the toilets in the arena were in good condition, there was even bog roll!

        I'm reading sick:0(
        • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

          I saw you twice!

what? why didn't you say hello...
            WHAT THE FUCK!
            • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

              where, when, how...
              • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

I think the first time was (can't remember day) outside the middle lot of toilets. And the other time I was just wandering around at night. I think that was after I'd seen LCD in the Radio one and I was heading to Adam Green. I thought "where do I recognise her from? Hmm. Oh yes! I'd better not say hello incase it's not her though"
                • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Oh that's a shame...well sort of. I was paranoid induced by the end of the festival because so many people were shouting 'Lauren!' all the time. Were you in yellow camp?
                  • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

It's probably just as well, I'm rather boring and wouldn't want my wonderful internet persona to be ruined. Erm.

Plus if it wasn't you, the poor lady would have thought I was a total weirdo/attempting to chat her up.

Though we could have recounted when we almost went to that Belgian festival! Good times! :P

I was in Brown. It's all about Brown.

shit all happened in B11, green and yellow were where the party was at
                    • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

There's nowt better than being chatted up in festival toilets.

I could kick myself for not gonig to that Belgium festival. I am going to move to France though . They get on average eleven weeks paid holiday, a year!!

No yellow was the place to be. The campsite was like a bombsite yesturday, tents on fire, trees on fire...Reading did make me feel old though. There were so many young people there. I mean like 13,14 year olds.
                      • Re: Best/Worst/Surprises etc from Carling

Yeah the average age of Reading must be like 15/16

                        And they were all drunk

And I still didn't get lucky!

                        Darn me

Not that I was actually in the mood to

I agree about the night-time there being shit. It's as if they WANT a load of drunken teenagers setting fire to things. I mean, the cabaret goes on till 1.30ish on the friday and saturday, and there's the cinema tent, but that is it. Glastonbury goes on 24-hours practically and they rarely have trouble. They could easily have seperate cabaret and comedy tents which go on later, plus a few more club-type tents with music for all the extacy lot to feck off to, and maybe some nice late night open-mike acoustic thingy. I dunno.

Having said all that I participated in some of the setting fire to things myself...

I don't think I saw me! I was over by the Welsh flags. Dam it, mean fiddler cashed my deposit! Ah well, better than following the shit truck for five days.

I'll put some more stuff here:

    (Leeds)

    Bad Bits

*Incubus being shit, well I was kinda expecting that anyway
*Why oh why can they not have a Dance tent for everyday?
    *Our BBQ's being crap
*The Blood Arm were pretty piss poor
*Editors perfecting their Joy Division rip-off 'music'
*LCD Soundsystem messing up setting up so only playing for 30 mins (but what a good 30 mins!)
*Sitting through Dinosaur Jr thinking "Oh god, here's another solo...."
    *The cesspit's....
*working out I had an average speed of 4.5mph in the past week

    Good bits

*Contray to you, I bloody enjoyed DFA 1979 and the Kills
*FourTet was amazing, the smell of Weed was overpowering
*Vegeburgers are the best festival food ever, with a cup of tea
*ILikeTrains (However you spell it) on the Unsigned stage were awesome, I kinda liked them when I last saw them live but on the big stage they were amazing.
*Our campsite was awesomely close to the arena, buses and toilets but yet we had so musch space, enough to play cricket
*Pixies, Arcade Fire, Sleater Kinney, Go Team, Saul Williams being generally ace.
*QOTSA being suprisingly good, twas right at the front for that.

    Funny bits

*Bringing loads of bottles to the campsite then having to pour all the water out of our bottles of water and replacing them with alcohol.
*Having a big arguement about who was the bigger twat when news of Doherty and Borrell fighting came through.
*Spending £30 in the supermarket and thinking "where did all that go???? oh yeah the gin...."
*Not being in a fit state for the last week, too much of a rock and roll lifestyle for me.... ;-)
*Sleeping through most of the riots at the end end in the campsite, shows how monged I was....

Ya just don't get Dinosaur Jr, do ya kid? 'sall about the solos being, like, good and actually part of the song, like, y'know, Hendrix and stuff. Yeah.
