This is written by a steward at the Reading Festival. It's from www.efestivals.co.uk

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
im not a user of this or any festival Forums , but i work at Reading every year as one of those guys u see on the towers in your camp sites and had to Find somewhere where people who go to reading can read what i have to say .

we are from dc site services and work many festivals including leeds and glastonbury .. our works site is www.dcsiteservices.com

i had to find a forum , and at least try to describe to you guys , what its like from my point of view , i have been working at reading now for 7 years , firstly on the towers , and then other stuff. ive seen many things from dudes sellin weed , jumpin fences , robbing tents , rape , robbery , fraud and confiscation of glass bottles by stupid scottish security guards (and u know they drink them ) To evictions , streakers , mass riots and staff being mutilated.

But this year took the piss , and im about to tell u why.

Our Job Description is a "safety Steward" which means , we are there to help you guys , when your lost , f*cked up , Youve been robbed , theres a fire , any first aid (including emergencies) etc etc etc , Basically those dudes with STEWARD (not the oxfam ones) on their jackets , are there to save your ass. u need help of any kind , they are the ones to ask , we are Security with Brains , We control the campsite.
There are 300 stewards (150 working at anytime) , 1700ish security , and 20 police on site workin at anytime , the security are responcible for policing the site and handin over bad bad boys to the police etc , we are responcible for gettin teh security to where they are needs , fire brigade to where their needed , and paramedics , and anything on the campsite ...

On sunday night This year i was working in the yellow Area , on one of the towers , now , ive seen some shit in the past 7 years , and evicted some right tits , who have been stealing from your tents , robbing your stuff , setting fire to your tents , well as i got on this tower in the early hours of the morning , i was informed it had been bottled by campers like 15 mins earlier ...so the staff that were on it , had to go sort themselves out , me and my colleague had been drafted in to help for an hour or so ...

when we got there there were 6 fires in a 1000metre radius from the tower , we have 10 exinguishers and 9 had been used , huge Gas canisteres were being thrown on to fires as well as deoderant cans and camping stoves , so there were 2 or 3 explosions per minute , mushrooms of fire and shrapnel in the darkness

The lights in Yellow had been knocked out by someone throwing toilet roll over the Light strings and Burning it , snapping the wire , and killing the generators curcuits , so its pitch black , all u can see are explosions and 1000`s of people around them . (we are supposed to put these out , even with 1000 rioting kids around them )
During all this , a lad appeared at the bottom of the tower , told my colleague that his girlfriend had been trampled in their tent by 200 rampaging lads , and had a serious back injury , i called in an emergency medic response and told my colleague to keep her still and find where she was to guide the ambulance in,
Pretty bad , all my roads are blocked by fires and explosions and 1000`s of u lot rampaging . i had called our fire rescue to come and deal with one of our larger fires as literrally 1000`s of campers had gathered round. . luckily this engine arrived quickly as it was local , and proceeded to clear a path towared the girl with a back injury to Cut her out of her tent . i was awaiting the ambulance still , bare in mind im gettin bottled 20 metres in the air , in darkness , mid riot .

i look down to watch the security drinkin their F*kin coffee , as my colleague fights his way thought a riot in a steward tabard trying to help this girl and hes gettin missiled ,the tabard is like a target. ... i notice a Lad aged about 15 heading to my tower Clutching his Crotch area , im 20 metres in the air and as he staggers towards the tower i can see the blood literally gushing from his lower chest / genitals . i see him collapse in front of my tower on to a camping chair and im lookin Directly down onto him , i see my colleage ( a 26 yr old grown man) go white in half a second , then the security guard panic , then i see the lad pull his t-shirt up , and trousers down , he moved his hand of his groin , and i saw the blood literlly piss out all over the floor , his nuts were no longer there and there was a hole in his stomach , this lad saw this and just blacked out instantly and fell off the chair ......
My radio is going Nuts with riots everywhere , Fires everywhere , people pushing over ice cream vans , catering stalls setting fire to tents , and THROWING GAS CANISTERS IN FIRES , im trying to get through to my control .... This lad , had walked past a fire that someone had thrown a canister on , and got hit by shrapnel . and now , while your all rioting , hes dying at the bottom of my tower , Gushing blood , and im trying to help him , being bottled for 40 quid for a 12 hour shift.

i managed to get though to control , and request an serious serious proper uber large emergency unconsious casualty with multiple injuries losing blood fast , my fire engine was dealing with my back injury casualty , and we diverted Her ambulance to the lad who now has no sex life to look forward to , at 15.

the girl was cut from her tent and got taken off site within an hour. i spoke to paramedics at 7am who confirmed the lad had been taken offsite too ,and was stable but obviously in hospital .

Dudes , im in my early 30`s and after we got off that tower , me and my colleage , both 6foot odd strappin lads who u wouldnt wanna mess with , were in shock and crying , that poor lad , jesus ........

ive met some great people at festivals in 7 years , saved some lives , made some friends , evicted some twats ,

but my point is this , it was me - or that lad ,

either i had gone and put all those 6 fires out with my 1 extinguisher against 2000 rioting nutters on each fire who would have batered me or worse as i put a fire out a canister exploded and i end up where that lad is , or YOU GUYS get injured cos we cant help you cos you have stretched us to the limit with all your gay stuff.

its your lives ,we are there to help Y0u.

i wont be there to help u guys anymore im afraid , i cant go back after seeing that lad , im still in shock even now. a few of you reading this will laugh and say hahaha good riddance , but ive seen all our experienced staff disapear over the years .. for teh same reason as me . and now u are gettin 16-18 year old kids who have never seen a festival .

i hope u guys read this and at least 1 person listens .

Re: Reading: This is horrific

If this is the level of human decency we can come to expect at a music festival then they should be banned.

For all those that savage V and its ilk for being a bit 'nice' etc then i hardly think the incidents that happen year in/year out at the Carling festivals is a better option.
Well done for speaking out and hopefully major changes will come about as a result.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

I love the "we are Security with Brains" line. Riiiiight.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Thats horrfic.

I dont understand why this happens at Leeds / Reading but hardly at all at any other festies - thoughts?

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Cause its full of twats who go there just goes its leeds/reading, other festivals are purely about the music.

Re; Reading: This is horrific

just because*

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Thats so terrible. Mindless animals! I feel for that bloke.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Good God, that is horrendous.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

My Fucking God...is this England??

Jesus...That Lad...it made me feel sick.

...........

Im quite shocked...

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Very fucked up, assuming it's true.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

If this is true, then I don't blame this guy at all.

This is why I HATE Reading so much. Some of the people this festival attracts are scum. I've been to Reading for the weekend once; never again. I just don't understand the people who go anymore. Maybe i did when I was 16. Face it, Reading is for kids and kids who have never grown up.

Shit, sorry, this is turning into a rant, and I didn't want i to!

Re: Reading: This is horrific

That is awful, really.

I agree with a poster up there (^) somewheere- even though V may be a bit twee, at least it isnt this

I mean, where these people drunk? the ones who mutilated the boy?

Re: Reading: This is horrific

He got hit be a piece of shrapnel.. i think, he wasn't deliberately mutilated.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

I did think that was a little unlikey...

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Fair enough.. I was just going by what was said by steward..

Re: Reading: This is horrific

On the Sunday night, I stayed in my tent after 12pm. I was in yellow camp I was really scared to come out of my tent. That's all I heard were explosions and people shoutin all night until 9am in the morning.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

That is so fucked up, seriously all the rioting and stuff on the last night really pissed me off, sure I don't mind people making lots of noise and starting fires but when those fires turn into people making explosions and burning peoples tents it's just a step to far. And me brothers friend said he saw some people trying to tip over a fire truck, what the fuck is the point in that. Oh, and I'm sure there are good security guards but when there was a fight with tent poles going on, the ones I saw were videoing it on the camera phones and shouting stuff like "kill him". I mean, I loved every minute of the music but the Sunday night just went too far at some points and I swear it wasn't that bad last year. What with more tickets being sold (therefore making it more crowded), the prices going up, the riots getting worse and the music (possibly) going down in standard (although this years line up was fantastic I get the feeling next years might not be), I suspect that the atmosphere of the festival may just continue getting worse. It's sad really that this could probably all be avoided if stuff went on all night , like at Glastonbury.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

the thing is the people that actually do this sort of thing probably wont read this

Re: Reading: This is horrific

ok but why was this not in the press - would rather be informed about the condition of people in modern Britain than that the Foo Fighters 'played a blinder' - then perhaps we cna do something about these type of people

People have always been sub human at festivals - ask anyone who went to Glastobury/Reading/Phoenix during the 90s - thanks Oasis

Re: Reading: This is horrific

I was at Download Festival this year and it was a complete contrast to this. Metal fans always seem to have a bad name for some reason...but nothing happened at all, everyone got along, everyone in the camping area were laughing and joking with each other. No violence, no abuse, no fire, nothing. People slept, ate, laughed, had a good time.

I really don't understand how this can happen. They are not music fans, and thats for sure.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

its because chavs usually arent metal fans

Re: Reading: This is horrific

T In The Park isn't like this either. Could be those nasty bottle stealing Scottish security guards up here actually get off their arses.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

yeah true tinthepark is ace, although there was one tent which got set on fire but apart from that it was fine from what i saw

Re: Reading: This is horrific

mean fiddler obviously get in the cheapest and least trained security personnel as possible so that they can maximise their profit margins with little consideration to humanity

Re: Reading: This is horrific

its got little to do with mean fiddler... just the (majority of) type of people that reading appeals to, you could have the same security at glastonbury or iow and everything would be fine.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

although that sounds a bit extreme, thats why reading has never appealed for me, its full of 14-16 year olds aways from home for the first time, experimenting with alcohol and drugs.
the last place id want to try any hallucinogenic drug for the first time is at a festival.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

ah. i just posted pretty much the same thing. :)

Re: Reading: This is horrific

I agree with Prole: Why isn't this in the press? Someone was maimed and a fullscale riot took place that clearly the festival organisers were powerless to prevent. So why hasn't Mean Fiddler been told they won't be allowed to run Reading next year?

I've been to Reading once and frankly I hated it and thought it felt bad.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Yes Reading is a bit backwards in terms of festivals - always has been my least favourite - its where you quickly learn that everyone into music isn't a sensitive interesting chap/lady who wants to sit round your camp fire and make quick witted ripostes. - its full of cro-magnon regionals who want to piss on your fire, steal your beer and wank in your girlfriend's face whislt shouting 'bollocks' and gurning like a stuck pig.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

I was jealous of those at Reading and Leeds over the weekend, but really deep down I was quite glad I didn't bother going.

There's some right cunts about, and it looks like quite a few of them were at Reading over the weekend.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

that makes for pretty shocking reading [er...genuinely no pun intended.]... personally i love Reading to bits, far and away my favourite festival, and in years and years of going, i've never been unlucky enough to witness or get caught up in any of the bad shit that reportedly happens; my experiences of the campsites after the arena closes down have always been of people running around making lots of noise and doing stupid/funny but harmless things. i think the majority of people that go, go to have fun without ruining anyone else's weekend, and it's a horrible shame that meatheads with other plans, and inadequate security, wreck it for them and put the future of the festival in jeopardy; more depressingly i can't imagine mean fiddler u-turning on the increased number of people at Reading this year or bothering to employ more reliable security and/or clamp down on this kind of behaviour.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Its a mixture of bad security and under-developed proles running amok like they're acting out the beginning of man something, but with Somebody Told Me as their soundtrack. Pricks.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

That's horrible, but worse things happen, much worse. At least a Reading these guys are there.
Not nice though cos it could have been anyone of us.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Festivals I went to in the late eighties had a problem with a bunch who are known as 'the brew crew'. Dumb Wiltshire crusties who drive about in coaches and breed weasels or something. They were an irritant who tried to bully and steal from people. A gentle but firm 'fuck off you minging flea ridden junkie posers before we cave your skulls in' seemed to work.

This is hugely worse though and has been on the rise at these festivals for over a decade now. As we said above, T In The Park is usually good, but I did have an attempted attack on me in 96 by Ben Sherman/Top Shop nedchav tits. I stood up for myself and was lucky enough to have passers by even up the odds which predictably stopped these wankers in their tracks.

What can be done to stop this though ? A hugely stepped up and more proactive security presence ? Or would that just completely kill the fun of the festival experience ?

I was talking to a friend who works the door of one of Glasgows smaller venues last night. He was telling me they have a lot of trouble now. Chavned scum from the shithole estate close to it trying to attack or rob punters or staff outside the venue. Inside though it's student indie types who are causing all the trouble along with older Gallagher wannabes. They have a large propertion of older chavneds who show up, drink water and just want to dance to old techno tracks. They get the piss ripped out of them by the indie students but usually don't rise to it and leave at the end without any trouble. Complete role reversals inside and outside the venue.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

This is awful.

Personally though, I found that all the trouble I saw at Leeds was 30 year old men, with rabbit turds for brains - setting their tents on fire and abusing anyone who walked past them. It wasn't the young'uns.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Where were you!?

Re: Reading: This is horrific

this is why i'm always reluctant to go to Reading, £140 and i hear something like this that makes me really feel physically sick. I was mortally pissed off when we came back from the arena on Sunday night and found our crate of 20 cans of Stella had been nicked but that seems to pale into insignificance in the light of this. We were quite lucky where we were camped (in green) no nutters nearby and lots of nice people who gave us beer when we told them ours had been nicked. I'm all for getting nicely wasted and having fun and I'm really angry about the original story so i'm losing my point now but.....sometimes I just hate the general public and the fact this guy has had to try so hard to find somewhere to post his message so people will listen

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Feel really sorry for the people working there and anybody else caught up in the crossfire that have to put up with all this shit. Not my idea of a good weekend.

Personally I've had it with big gigs and big festivals anyway. Fucking queing, id checking, fucking cockass cumsuckers burning your tent down, FUCKING RIOTS!!! whatthefuck?, fucking bag searches, shit food, shit sound, shit view, shit weather, shit bands, can't have a shit without roasting your arse with some disease, shit.

I didn't have to put up with any of this at Truck this year, well, apart from avioding the anal diseases part.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

That's a fucked up story (especially the intro about having seen rapes before, like thats par for the course) but not surprising. How many people have seen gas cannisters being exploded at Reading before and shrapnel flying everywhere? There are groups of people who go to Reading with no intention of seeing any bands - instead they are habitual drinkers who see it as a nice excuse to do what they usually do in company. I mean, who would pay 150+ to camp in essentially filth for 4 nights when you could camp elsewhere for, like, £20 and have decent facilities. There is a kind of anything goes atmosphere that some are going to take advantage of and some even go with the intention of abusing.

I do feel a bit offended by the tone of the opening post - lumping everyone together as if we all start rioting. Most people are pretty scared by explosions going on all night and keep their heads down.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

This is horrific - I went to Reading in 2001 when Glastonbury was on a break year, and this sort of thing is why I'm never going again. I saw idiots trying to break down the security watch tower, and burning portaloos exploding. Dangerous and stupid.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

I have just read on another site and from an eye witness that the kid who was maimed etc was one of the ones chucking gas canisters in the fire and then for a laugh decided to jump over it.

The canister went off and blew his crotch off.....If this is true serves him right then, what a cock....well that's not the case now is it.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

And Oasis weren't even playing!

Not sure what is more worrying, the riots or a 30 year old man saying 'Dude'.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

I see that the original article(on efestivals) has now been removed.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

That post has been deleted from e-festivals.

Hoax?

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Not necessarily. Just a lot of angry phonecalls.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

It's gone from DIS now!

Re: Reading: This is horrific

notice it's gone from the DiS news too. you getting hassle?

Re: Reading: This is horrific

What was most horrific experience for me was finding that my best mate had just shat in the tent. What a smell.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Having read the thread on the efestival site it doesn't sound like a hoax to me. More like the work of Mean Fiddler grubby little mitts to aviod bad publicity.

Interestingly they still have a multitude of posts from little boys congratulating each other on how much havoc they caused.

one post actually read:

"Ive never felt such sense of community as when we were booing that fireman"

Oh to have such a pointless little person in the world, it makes me feel all warm inside.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

I was wondering if maybe Mean Fiddler would kick off about this, I presume its them whos called you.

Bad press and all that.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

From Mean Fiddler by any chance?

Re: Reading: This is horrific

sorry, first post failed or so I thought.

"Ive never felt such sense of community as when we were booing that fireman"

That's priceless! You can imagine them clutching their heart and looking to the sky as they say it! Some community that must be!

Re: Reading: This is horrific

I have no intention of going there.

I have my heart set on Glasto. I've never been to any, but just from experiences you can tell its gonna be superior.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

They have also just deleted a post on efestivals by the author saying " why the fuck did you delete my post!"

How long before this thread goes? 5, 4 ,3 ,2 ....

Re: Reading: This is horrific

why have you guys just removed this from the news section?

Re: Reading: This is horrific

the festival steward that originally posted that story keeps posting his story on efestivals and getting it deleted. Apparently its due to "potential legal problems"

Re: Reading: This is horrific

To be honest I think it was a bit dodgy that they put it up in the first place seeing as they couldn't substantiate it. Even if they weren't the first to print it, just by repeating this story DiS could still have been liable to be sued for libel.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Regardless of what eye witnesses have stated then?

Re: Reading: This is horrific

Yes, but can anyone track down these eyewitnesses? If it was enough just to quote someone as an eyewitness and leave it at that then potentially anyone can make up quotes and a story and just attribute them to "eyewitnesses".

I'm not saying I don't believe the story, in fact it seems more than plausible, but if this were true then it would be very easy to check up with reports from police and the fire brigade who surely must've been called.

Re: Reading: This is horrific

It stinks really. People on this site have been quite balanced. Some seem to think that 'riots' is an exaggeration and have questionned the truth of the contents of the post. So what if it's not completely accurate? You simply can't fully regulate what people say on the internet. Just removing things makes people all the more edgy and suspichous.
