The Spoon album isn't all that great, i keep giving it another chance but i've yet to come around to it. It lacks the sparseness and space between the instruments that made the other albums so compelling.
ah, i think I know what your problem is there.... you read lots of really good things about the Subways in NME! easy mistake to make, see also: Kaiser Chiefs; Babyshambles
el_pescado, are you for real? Cuts Across The Land is brilliant... though appreciate that opinions can differ. Personally I love it, all brooding and building and booming and... can't think of anything else beginning with 'b'... just ace!
i was going to say Digital Ash...but then realised its not the MOST disappointing release this year, but it by no mean was the departure it was built up to be.
I think Digital Ash is the better of the two, although it is still fairly meh. And not really a departure at all. It suits Obersto better than imitation country.
That latest Spoon album was the first thing I'd heard by them, I didn't undertstand what the hype was all about at all. I Turn My Camera On (Off?) grates really badly.
I got into Bright Eyes through Desaparecidos, who I love, so I couldn't understand why I didn't like Bright Eyes. Then I heard the Statistics albums (Desparecidos' guitarist, I think) and it all became clear.
For me Bloc Party - Silent Alarm. I liked Helicopter, Banquet and Little Thoughts when released as singles and expected more from the album. It didn't end up being too much to my taste.
Agree about Silent Alarm. Loved the Banquet EP but the album had some bloody dull songs on it like that one where they were lying in Autumn leaves in the video. They should stick to the more upbeat stuff on their next album.
I agree with you about the Departure album Marco. The first couple of singles were really good and they were excellent when I saw them live a year or so back, but the album sounds a bit half-arsed.
I also really can't warm to The Tears' album, as much as I've wanted to. I would have loved it if Brett and Bernard could have pulled some sort of epic super-record out of the bag after all these years, but it just sounds like a not-very good Suede album.
Dishonourable mentions also go to Billy Corgan and Doves.
All Mapped Out was great, but everything since has been pretty standard stuff; ie not that great. The album (and singles after All Mapped Out) isn't bad, it just doesn't deliver on early promise. A lot of people mention the bad timing of the album as well; saying that it's 6 months too late or something. I don't understand.
The Tears' album is another that I would have loved to have loved (if that makes sense) but there isn't much to suggest that they at their very best.
Doves' Some Cities is a couple of chart friendly pop songs mixed with dull filler. A million miles away from Lost Souls.
Hey! I think the new Malkmus album is the best of his solo efforts. And I'm rather fond of the new smog (I'm so glad he's finally got rid of those stupid brackets around his name) album as well.
I wasn't overly impressed with the kid carpet album, but he's always been better live than on record.
Im going to have to say Idlewild as well, theres a couple of lovelys like "Too Long Awake", but otherwise, ugh. I expected a bit of rocking out with an additional guitarist....but yawwwwwn.
I didnt get on with "Lullabies To Paralyze" either
it could just be my brilliant taste and judgement but i havent been disappointed by much at all this year, though i'm not overly taken with Sons and Daughters
the Sons and Daughters album was a bit disappointing because they don't seem to have enough songs.
The Duke Spirit album had a awful production but was not as bad as some people said earlier in this thread.
The Team Sleep album is amazing, but then again, I wasn't expecting anything because I hadn't heard anthing. Also (technically) Mono remix album was last year.
Agree on the Doves on, specially after Black & White town was such an awsome track. I have a disturbing feeling that the new 'Size album could get the nod though, I really hope not.
There've been a lot of semi-disappointments. Like Trail of Dead, Mercury Rev, Idlewild and Doves, all of whose albums were not bad at all, in fact they were quite good, but I had hoped for something better. The TOD album fell apart in the last third, the Rev album was just too straightforward and lacking in the wild inspiration they used to have, the Idlewild album had some bland filler, and the same goes for the Doves album (although it's the best out of those four).
Disagree about the Departure, was worried that they didn't quite have enough material when I saw them headline for the first time, but I think the album's definitely got something. And I don't understand most of the comparisons going around, e.g. The Killers - how do they sound anything like each other?
But don't know what to actually choose, guess I'm easily pleased.
Kaiser Chiefs Employment.
Having heard the first few singles I was hooked. I bought the album the day it came out. It was shit. I was cured from then on. I now hate the Kaiser Chiefs.
I have to agree about Bloc Party. Some of it was just really dull. I didnt know if I just didnt "get it", but I´m pretty sure it was just dull. But then I was only disappointed because I expected so much from the EP. Hopefully the next album will show what I think (hope) they can do.
If you haven't listened to Silent Alarm for a while, try going back to it and giving it another try. I listened to it a couple of times and didn't really get it, then had another listen several weeks later. Now I love it and it's one of my most-played albums.

I'd also second Worlds Apart, mentioned earlier in the topic.

Subways got 6 in the NME.
I think its just not good, not exactly awful.

Re: Most disappointing album of the year
Twas exchanged last week both for a Ween live double cd and Raw Power. Now that is value.
Spoon sounded very disappointing the few times i've listened to it. That 'lack of space' thing is totally spot on.

go back to that spoon album and try again. it does take it's time but the craft is still there and it'll worm it's way into you.
the new super furry animals hasn't really grabbed me yet.
oh, and dcfc.
Re: Most disappointing album of the year
Eastern Lane and Idlewild were both promising great things from their new albums. Both were crap.
Personally I think Worlds Apart is really good. But then I did get into Trail of Dead late.
Re: Most disappointing album of the year
Eastern Lane - after a great first album this one just doesn´t add anything.
Idlewild - I decided that they r a completely different band compared to their beginnings. Crappy one.

Pelican's 'The Fire In Our Throats...'

Sounds dated already, the guy has an annoying voice. It crumbles apart pretty quickly after the first two tracks.
Anyone who wants to buy it off me after that ringing endorsement can PM me.

I'm stunned people are saying Martin Grech
Re: Most disappointing album of the year
For me...
Bearvsshark
From Autumn To Ashes
Avenged Sevenfold (although i wasn't expecting this to be good)
Re: Most disappointing album of the year
This is simply awful. Mushy, souless and over-produced.
Mercury Rev- The Secret Migration
I quite like it, but I love everything else they've done so has to go down as a disappointment.
M83- Before The Dawn Heals Us
Utterly forgettable.
