Tbird is fine for a first bass. The only problem is that they're very neck-heavy, so the neck will keep sliding towards the floor. You could buy a cheap Squier Precision instead which might be more comfortable (though that has quite a wide neck). I suggest trying them out first.
No they don't. Well, the standards don't, I can't say great thing about the affinitys or bullets, it has to be said. Standards are ok guitars. Spending £30 extra or whatever really makes a difference to the pickup and neck quality.
Epiphones suck because they cost twice as much as guitars that are no better than them. They're made by a company called Samick, so they have to pay samick a bit extra for them, and then they just slap the epiphone name on and sell it for a wad of cash just because they're owned by Gibson... they're not even made by Gibson.
I have a Squier Std Jagmaster which cost £210, and it is exactly the same as my friend's Epiphone LP Custom except that it isn't uncomfortable to play sitting down.
In fact, the only thing I don't like about the jag is that the tuners don't lock... and that the intonation on mine needs a tune up.
oh yeah, m dad said squires suck and said he wouldn't let my sister get one as a starter guitar, and secondly, squire doesn't make tbirds and the gibsons cost way more than the epiphones
Fender make Squier guitars, but Gibson only own the Epiphone brand. Epiphones are made by Samick based on Gibson plans, so they cost more because there is a middle man buying the guitar at one stage, and gibson can charge more for the guitar because people will buy it.
I guess if you;'re after a thunderbird there isn't loads you can do.
sorry guys, i'm american, i don't really understand pounds and quid and all that, rough translation into american would be appreciated, by which i mean so much pounds=so much american, thanks
It would be pretty foolhardy to buy a new epiphone when there are so many cheap cheap vintage guitars out there for a couple of hundred bucks...have a look around on ebay and www.gbase.com You could get something cool and unique
The epiphone is crap, but it looks cool, so maybe that is more important...even a piece of shit will still play okay.
Old squiers are amazing, better than proper fenders from the period (early eighties)- I bet you could get an early jap squier bass for $3-400 dollars, and they are the bollocks (good).
Re:- the epiphone/gibson squier/fender thing, To be fair, epis and squiers are both made in far eastern factories and then have logos slapped on them. They might be paid for by Fender and Gibson, but basically it is farmed out work. One has no more kudos than the other.

Squier guitars are actually made by Squier, who are owned by Fender.
Epiphone guitars are made by Samick, who aren't owned by Gibson.

Maybe so, but for many years squiers and japanese Fenders were made in the Fuji Gen Gakki factory, who also made Ibanez- and those are without question the highest rated Squier guitars ever made- which kinda belies the concept that Fender owning the factory makes the guitars somehow better... The current Squier guitars are okay, but not even a status quo iron-on patch on those babies.
I'd possibly consider going for a seventies Fender musicmaster bass if I was in the states and looking for a first bass...if you can get around the myth that long scale=better. I use one of these on my bands first two albums, and it kicked ass. Easy to find one for $300
thaks for all the imput, i'm still not sure about what to do, and the bass i buy will be the 1st bass i've owned, right now i play my dad's old guild b-301 but i'm looking to move on.
is tempting. I have a GSR-200 which is my first bass but it's really quite solid. Only disadvantage is no active electronics and that. Better value than the Fender and Gibson copies from what I've seen.
woo punkman! the bird is my current bass, and unless u shell out a lil extra for a mex fender u won't get much better than the t-bird for those dollars. the sound is fantastic, the only bad thing about the bass is that it's neck heavy, which is minorly annoying
ME!!!! im a singer and i need a band who will work!!! my current wont work or take lessons i took my lessons so i know what im doing they are the ones who need the help and im tired of waiting so you neede a singer i found one
Fender Precision is what you need; The T-Bird looks cooler but the Fender is a much better all round guitar. Rickenbacker is distinctive with loads of attack but in my opinion is a tad toppy. No it has to be the Fender P. But hey, what do I know I'm a drummer.......
it seems like almost every bassist plays a p or j-bass, geddy's is an exeption cause it's got some sort of faulty wiring that gives it a super low end. but i barely see any bassists who don't play fenders, and besides, i like the thought of dual humbucers over a single split coil.
and musicmans rule, i tryed out a bongo (yes i know, a very queer name) and it kicked ass! ibanezes do not make any good basses. the iceman comes close though.

i'm sick and tired of fender!

It's those fucking rock basses you should be sick of
Nowadays everyone plays one of those rock basses, like ibanez makes. Those fucking suck. And so do those musicman ones. I hate them hate them.
I think that those les paul basses are pretty good. Unfortunately they also cost about 5 months wages, which sucks a major's cock.
hven't seen any of the les pauls
and musicmans rule, i tryed out a bongo (yes i know, a very queer name) and it kicked ass! ibanezes do not make any good basses. the iceman comes close though.
