The Libertines

Fish 'n' chips, rainy Sunday afternoons watching the football, lock-ins down your local, The Libertines...all of these are quintessentially British, they are all part of the romantic make-up of a forgotten country, they all mean something to us, something comforting and welcoming that is difficult to pin down. The Libertines are a band who are refeshingly different. Sure, they sound like the Jam, the Clash, the Smiths etc, etc, but does that really matter? They are a band who clearly love their fans, and will do anything to play their songs live: house parties, illegal pub gigs, impromptu acoustic sets, whatever. They are driven by a love of music, a love of their fans, and a love of living to excess. They embody the energetic and unashamedly shambolic punk spirit, while counting among them (in Doherty and Barat) possibly the best British songwriting partnership sing Morrissey and Marr. NME were spot-on, and I know how much that must piss some of you off. Shame.

Hey! An NME writer on the dis board! Cool!
  • Re: The Libertines

Refreshingly different! WTF!? Even you can see who they've ripped off (they are way more derivative than being just influenced)in the list you provided. It's another cack band being lauded cos it's easier to discuss the same old piss, and the 'relaunch' the same old genre movements than it is to go further than the Barfly and investigate the diversity of the British Music scene.

As for the NME being spot-on, who cares? does anyone still read it?
    • Re: The Libertines

Is it such a heinous crime to have clear influences? Must every new band create a new genre? When I cited them as being 'refreshingly different', in terms of their attitude towards their fans, playing live and writing quality lyrics, I believe they are. At a time when, as you rightly allude to, seemingly any mediocre band with dishevelled hair and a second-hand recollection of 1977 is instantly wanked over by NME, I think their music stands up. I appreciate the diversity of the British music scene as much as anyone with any sense, but it's important not to overlook the hyped bands who actually live up to the talk. It's all about sorting the wheat from the chaff. Obviously, if you don't like the Libertines, fair enough, it's just that I don't think they deserve to be bracketed (no pun intended) with some of the worthless, meaningless shite that is currently out there. Anyone for Hoggboy? Didn't think so...
      • Re: The Libertines

What happens when people realise everything they love happened 25 years ago and was back better then? ..they learn nothing has progressed. We're in a constant state of obsession with the past. But the Libertines are a fucken great example of how people take styles and get the content confused - the only thing you can say about them of any value is they're a great example of what post-modernism is all about.

They lack personality and anything to even remotely believe in. They lack an album of songs anywhere near as good as the single - why have the NME let bands get away with releasing what should be an EP?

Rock'n'roll ain't all about leather jackets and herione paid for by The Man. Even Oasis know what it's about.
        • Re: The Libertines

Your irrational and confused tirade against bands who wear leather jackets seems to be as narrow-minded and tiresome as you claim such bands to be. Your apparent obsession with taking an anti-NME stance at every opportunity is of greater importance than the content of a band's music. "Rock'n'roll aint all about leather jackets" : very true, but who suggested it was? "They lack personality" : I wasn't aware you knew them so well. As for not having anything to remotely believe in; how about their energy, their spirit, their attitude towards their music and their fans? And what is all this vague 'The Man' shit? It's a shame that your preconceptions concerning bands in leather jackets get in the way of actually listening to the music, which is what we're all here for at the end of the day. Go and see the band play live; I reckon that even you could be won over...
          • Re: The Libertines

the problem with DiS and the Libertines to me, seems to be the fact that the Libertines don't have Kinesis, Reuben or Shitty Clyro in their name. Libertines suck though.
          • Re: The Libertines

            I've seen them 3 times.
Reading 2002 (they got boo'd). Sex Pistols at the Palace. And playing support somewhere along the lines. Not to mention seeing 'em on various tv progs, the vids on music tv, the radio sessions.

I should only need to hear an album to know if a band has personality - and why would i wanna hang out with a bunch of guys who heroine addictions?

What's all this attitude to their fans you talk about? Just because they've done some pr stunts to promote their album, things to give them kudos, it doesn't mean anything. Why shouldn't bands give a shit about the people who buy their records? The customer is always right and all that.

I'm not anti-NME, i couldn't give two shits about it. The Libertines have been written about all over the media, that's the nature of the beast with bands like that.

I ain't got a problem with bands in leather jackets, else I wouldn't be into The Coopers, Icarus Line or the grandads of it all The MC5.

They've cashed in on nostalgia. They're the new Menswe@r, it's THAT simple.
            • Re: The Libertines

a heroine addiction sounds awesome...24/7 heroic women
            • Re: The Libertines

the Libertines are one of the best bands around. I don't know how you can whinge and moan and slag them off. You obvisly don't appreciate good music and have no taste. 'They're the new menswear'? What the hell does that mean? The Libertines are a band buzzing with energy and love for what their doing and thats how they create such good music.
              • Re: The Libertines

i saw the libertines on jools holland a while back. i turned it on, and thought they were the strokes. i'm not being sarky or facetious - i actually, genuinely thought they were the strokes for about a minute and a half.

then i realised their faces were a bit more unfortunate than those of the strokes.

the music isn't even worth commenting on - because it's literally nothing. without entity or identity. and when all you can say about a band is that they're not very pretty, it really reflects on their offensive blandness and nothingness.

they're shit and undividual and i despise them.

It would seem that to become a DiS writer, you need little more than an irrational fear and hatred of any band hyped in the music press; a love of truly awful bands (e.g: Miss Black America, Kinesis, A, My Vitriol, Reuben); and a pretty narrow-minded view of the British music scene. The reason the bands worshipped on this site get little attention in the music press is simply because they are fucking awful, and completely undeserving of a mention. The views being expressed on The Libertines and 'the leather jacket brigade' appear to be the result of a bizarre jealousy regarding the fact that they recieve and deserve attention, while bands such as MBA and My Vitriol remain on course for indie obscurity. You can't fail to see that The Libertines put everything into their music, that they try and play to their fans at every available opportunity, and that they are driven by a love of music rather than of the corporate dollar. Sean's confused and weak 'The Man' theory is entirely ridiculous, reminiscent of an overtly cynical 6th form conspiracy theorist. And if they're not pretty enough for Gen, and they wear leather jackets that are soooo 1977, that's a real shame, but I thought this site was about the music rather than the image.
                  • Re: The Libertines

Don't put all DiS writers in the same bracket, it's a diverse bunch.

                    a) need little more than an irrational fear and hatred of any band hyped in the music press.

-Nah, I just think they most of the time pick the shit to hype because they have to sell copy on characters and creating genres to make it easier to write about. I don't read it anymore though.

b)a love of truly awful bands (e.g: Miss Black America, Kinesis, A, My Vitriol, Reuben)

-I hate all of those mentioned, so at least we agree on something.

c)and a pretty narrow-minded view of the British music scene

                    -that's just a silly comment.

Fair enough, it was wrong of me to put all of you in the same bracket, it's just that that's the general impression I got from the response in this thread.
                    • Re: The Libertines

As a dIs writer, can I just say I thought the Libertines' album was very good. Surprisingly so. I don't really know anything about the band, their history or who rates 'em/hates 'em. Not especially bothered. But as someone increasingly left cold by indie-guitar-rock, The Libertines managed to strike a [dis]chord with me, probably because they aren't a rock band at all but a good old-fashioned (ie late '80s) indie band - especially lyrically, in which they are streets ahead of their hilariously over-earnest nu-rock rivals. Had not time constraints been upon me I would have made the case in the album review that I was going to do but never did. Suffice to say: 'Up The Bracket' is a perfectly fine English indie album. People tell me I'm wrong -
                      fuck 'em.
                      • Re: The Libertines

The Libertines album was inteligently written and produced. The lyrics are very good and well thought through which makes a change from all these shit nu metal/un hyped indie bands which most of DiS seem to love. Why you seem to grap at and love every no hope indie band that has been ignored by the press i don't know. But i bet if My Vitriol or reuben appereared on the front cover of NME next week they would be forgotten of round here.

                          rubbish
                          it's Careless Talk that's so mindnumbingly anti-NME
it's just anti-bandswedon'tlike here as far as the 'ethos' goes anyway
it's nicer to be more pro-bandsyoudolike though wouldn't you agree
                          but I dunno
some people like to be anti something or they just curl up and have to start hating themselves again
aah the sweet joy of distraction
