I'm going to Birmingham tomorrow. Not for, liek, ever. But for some days. Five days. Hell yeah. The real reason I'm going shall remain shrouded in secrecy, because it's uber-gay, but I shall hopefully have the evenings to myself after I've done the work-related schmooozing bit.

Anyway. Where do I go? What do I do? I've not been to Brum for years, and thus I don't know what happens anymore. So, in the centre of town, for rock n roll and cheap cider. What's going on? Anything? Or do I have to make my own entertainment? If so, come see me in the Ramada Hotel until Saturday afternoon for naked dancing and jenga.

Re: Birmingham

Birmingham scares me, so I stay hidden in New Street to wait for my connections...

Re: Birmingham

Do an "hilarious" comedy brummie accent. ALL THE TIME.

They love it.

Re: Birmingham

That's normally what I do. But I'm preparing to brach out from my train station hideaways and go to other places. Like the McDonald's on the ramp from the station into town...

Re: Birmingham

In Birmingham for 5 days...

Your not part of the consortium to buy aston villa by any chance?

Re: Birmingham

Preposterous! Guards, have this man executed! *boards plane to Vladivostock to escape rumour-mill*

Re: Birmingham

I stayed there for two nights. I dont know why, but I really hated it there. The Carling Academy is quite a nice venue though. Very dark. Although, as always, the beer is far too expensive. On a Friday it turns into a club which is rather amusing.

Re: Birmingham

There's usually something good on <a href=http://www.ents24.com/web/venue/17986/Birmingham/The_Medicine_Bar_at_The_Custard_Factory.html>here.
You could visit the Chinese quarter to eat... it's very close to New Street: out past the taxis, right, left at the crossroads/lights and you're there... you can't really avoid the new Bullring, and Selfridges is fantastico, but there are a couple of good indie record shops lurking around the backstreets... see if you can find Swordfish and Tempest. The Sunflower Lounge is a great bar, they have good music many nights of the week. If you follow that route towards Chinatown you'll see it on your right, painted yellow. Ikon gallery is brilliant, a 10 minute walk from the centre (through the Symphony Hall and past all the bars and restaurants of Brindleyplace) and it has a great tapas style cafe... definitely worth a look. If you're going out in the evening, Brindleyplace is a good bet. And if you want chavvy late night drinking and the possibility of random violence, Broad Street is the place to be.

Re: Birmingham

The link again - here

Re: Birmingham

Yeah, I know Tempest and Swordfish, I've been shopping there before. It's more the late night entertainment I want, away from Broad Street which is where my uber-chav work buddies will be heading.

Re: Birmingham

I've gotta ask. Is it for a rather large convention for a particularly unglamourous medical profession?

If it is, let me know, as I'm going on Thursday for work.

Re: Birmingham

I'll be in Halls 19 & 20 of the NEC from Wednesday to Saturday. Is it the same convention? What's your job?!

Re: Birmingham

I'll plug you GOOD!

Hey sir... come to a nice little gig???

D.LOUIS BAKER & FRIENDS www.dlouisbaker.com
SEDUCEDWOMANDEAD http://www.myspace.com/seducedwomandead
@ The sunflower Lounge, Smallbrook Queensway, Birmingham
£4 entry, about 8:30

The place is just out the back of new street really and a good little dungeon room with air con no less.

I'll let you get on the mic and do yer best brummie accent if you like.

Re: Birmingham

Good stuff. As long as I'm not 'entertaining clients', I shall show my face. Or I could entertain my clients there. I'm sure they'd love it.

Re: Birmingham

Ineternational Dental Showcase? Or is that a dirty phrase?

I'm at the Health Protection Agency radiation Protection Division. My job is assessing X-ray sets to see if they meet legal limits on their performance.

Re: Birmingham

Shhh! They'll all find out! I'll be on stand L22 if you wanna come and say hello on Thursday afternoon. Luckily our stand is on the way to the bar, so I could 'liaise' (have a beer) with a 'client' (you).

Re: Birmingham

Well you could come and see TEAM at the Jug of ale in wonderfull Moseley on Wednesday (£3.00 in and £1.50 a pint woohoo)then 65 Days of Static at the same place on Thursday.

Re: Birmingham

TEAM don't do it for me, but 65days interests me greatly. I may see you there. Zonino!

Re: Birmingham

I take it you wont be oging out on Broad Street then Bammy? Moseley is quite 'bohemian' in a Stoke Newington kind of way - when I go to birmingham I ususally have Who Wants to Be the Disco King on my brain so hopefully you will have that also

Re: Birmingham

Either that or 'Get The Girl, Kill The Baddies'.

Re: Birmingham

not forgetting of course 'Kill Yr Television'

Whislt on the subject the man who signed the Kaiser Chiefs is a big fan of Ned's - and who can blame him in these uncertain times?

Re: Birmingham

I live in Moseley - I've never thought of it as Bohemian.

Re: Birmingham

If he's comparing it to Stoke Newington, he probably means it's full of people who think that by living in Hackney they're "roughing" it compared to us pansies who live in Islington.

Re: Birmingham

I've no idea what you are talking about - where are these places? Are they down south somewhere?

Re: Birmingham

Islington: straight down Holloway Rd.
Hackney: left at Ball's Pond Road, continue on till you go past Hell.

What, there's a world outside London? EH?

Re: Birmingham

JDT I live in Sutton Coldfield....by which standards Mosely is definately bohemian/cosmopolitan.

Guntrip - I've lived in Islington and Hackney, Islington isn't necessarily pansyfied (Unless you can afford to live there)

Re: Birmingham

Agreed - I lived in "next to Moseley but cheaper" Kings Heath as cosmopolitan Moseley was too expensive for me.

Re: Birmingham

Blimey...I'm in Norwich this week, however its my Birthday on the 6th....I was hoping to make it back on the Thursday evening, so you could buy me some beer and I will bring a pie.

Re: Birmingham

Oh, NOW you come to Birmingham...

I'm sure you'll have fun, just avoid Broad Street.

Re: Birmingham

B-road Street? Imaginative naming by the Brummies. Is there an A-road Avenue and, perchance, a Motorway Road?
