bad - stupidly narrow gaps between the shelves so you end up havin to stand far to close to the next person - fecking hmv
good - seperate sections which have been organised by someone smart enough to give a suitable categosiation (thus speeding up my cd finding experience) - hurrah steelwheels
I'd completely abandon organising music by 'genre'. The amount of times I've gone to the wrong section to try and find certain genres. It's fucking annoying. Simple alphabetical order, for everything.
Also, I'd like to incorporate some sort of bar section with individual listening posts and stools. Pick a stack of records, put them on your listening post, buy a beer and relax while checking out some new stuff.
I don't mean to be ungrateful, but FUCK OFF! I know how to shop for music you bastard!
Ahem. Also, remove the 'Q' section. File Quasimoto in the madlib section, 'q and not u' under 'U' and burn all the queen, queensrhyce and queen adrena CDs. Literally, burn them.
Look out for my pub/record shop combo, scheduled to open in London in 2012. 'Bag of pork scratchings and the new Le Tigre record please, my good man...'
yknow in HMV they have piles of books at the end of ailses.....how many times have I tripped over them?!?!
keep it alphabetical
yknow the poster racks, put them out the way so that the next time I shop in your shop, I dont get hit by some fucking by swinging the nekkid women posters into me.
Tis a good idea, and one i was already considering. I also though about some kind of live element or possibly a night time aspect to the shop, to compliment the local music scene.

Hate - "HELP" when I've only just stepped inside - give me at least 20 minutes. Narrow box things where you can't see what's inside and the order of records is laissez faire and plain lazy. How about see through perspex boxes. Things being ordered confusingly annoys me. Narrow ailses - people need space to move. NON REPLENISHED SHELVING!
Love: Everything else although does anyone dislike coffee shops within record stores? SHOPS THAT KEEP IT SIMPLE. It'd be nice if you didn't have to go to the counter to check availability like in argos - you could check yourself.
Bamos' beer and listening post is a grand idea.
There's a record store in NY called The Cake Shop that has a record store element/a bar-cafe element that sells drinks and nibbles and a performance space downstairs. Perfect idea.
no, beer - very very bad idea, there was a record shop in camden that was open after the pubs threw out and I would always make bad choices. bad bad idea.
Those HMV people with clip boards "may I help you" yes I agree feck off. Bad example of a record shop - Virgin Piccadilly. Can never find what I'm looking for. Do away with genres, seconded, apart from heavy metal, that section always has a strange smell, good to keep that separate. And file Kylie under K.
New releases should be that, not the hard-fi album. New releases from current week should be together and near the door. Vinyl section shouldn't be in a corner as an after thought and shouldn't be limited to dance 12".
Ergonomically / Architecturally speaking... um, never really thought about it. Soft lighting so you can flirt with the boy looking at your records. Decent flooring so I can wear silly shoes and not skid over. Flickable racks (oo er mrs). Computer stations customers can use to see if something's in stock and where it is (so you don't have to queue up to explain who the clash are). Enough space for two people to browse AND let the fat american get past to the coldplay records.
A must have: Snobby grumpy assistants. I hate this chirpy attitude they all have nowadays. I mean I doubt they'd even snigger if I asked for G4. If I want chirpy I'll go to a bird sanctuary.
Don't cram too many cd's into one section so you can't flick through them.
And don't get those silly shelves that let the front cd's fall out - every time i go to track in doncaster i manage to knock half their stock flying - feeling like a twat does not lead to a positive consumer experience.

Re: Music Shops
I went into a respected bristol record shop on monday and they didn't have the new ladytron album at all. Pathetic, I bought it from Fopp in the end.
Also a good selection or magasines available would be good. I need a good place to buy artrocker on a regular basis.

Park Street is great. It used to be better when there were four record shops on it though.

I loved that shop so much. I tried to get a job there, but they said no.
