Layne Staley had an amazing voice. I second that.
Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell both have amazing voices too.

Tom Waits can't really sing in any conventional way, but he's one of my favourite vocalists.

Ian Curtis was never a technically great singer in my view, but he expressed himself so well.

I know it may seem more spoken word, but the guy from A-Frames has a bit of a dull emotionless drone to it.... but it's fucking great!

Isaac Brock and Jeff Magnum for a start. And Malkmus was at his most affecting when stretching for notes he couldn't nearly reach.

Jamie Lidell? really? I think he's (on his new album) got a really strong 'proper' voice. lots of obvious conventional talent.

Not that I'm saying he's boring or that having real vocal ability is bad. It's just I thought this thread was about vocalists without real singing ability who are still good, and I wouldn't put him in that category.
