'We Are Only Healthy To The Extent That Our Ideas Are Humane'

by Oliver_Wright
Tired. Made a version of Dylan's 'Blind Willie McTell' today on me fourtrack - I'm still no guitarist, but I'm getting better. Went to Manchester's trendy Club Suicide friday night, was bought a sambuca by an old friend, saw another friend, who was celebrating her birthday (she looked great - was with another man.) Revisited old viinyls at home last night with a couple of friends and some beers. Sonic Youth's 'Evol' (which I enjoyed more than I ever had before), 'Orange' by Jon Spencer Blues X (the NYC sound before any of these latter-day chancers). Stereolab, SFA, 'Father To A Sister of Thought' by Pavement. Stopped buying LPs when I was at uni. Never had any money. Before I came to Manchester, every spare penny I had went on records. When I moved, I stopped buying records. Buy more these days, but starting DiS writing was a way of getting back into the loop, if I'm honest. Start hearing names, finding things to check out, dragging recalcitrant mates to gigs. Balance has been restored and I've managed to get involved in something of a musical community - it's healthy. I love being around people who give a shit about music. I'm afraid I don't really understand or care about people who don't. If somebody can talk to me about music, they'll find me the most open-hearted friend. If not, I find it very difficult. Playing every day, battling to find or make the time every day. It's now or never. Reading 'Breakfast of Champions' by Vonnegut. 'We are only healthy to the extent that our ideas are humane'. Is absolutely right.
