That eternal rite of passage to indiedom, Steve Lamacq's Evening Session, has been axed by wonderful BBC Radio 1.

Lamacq will continue to present Lamacq Live and outside broadcasts but his Evening Session has been axed as of December. Details of the replacement show, which will fill the Evening Session's 8-10pm Tuesday to Thursday slot, will be announced shortly by Radio 1.

A Radio 1 spokesman commented: The reason for the axing is that we have to keep the schedule fresh and relevant to the audience. The Evening Session has been an incredible show but the time has come for a change. We are really excited about the new show.

Does this make you angry?? Surely Radio 1 should be getting rid of their tiresome, samey dance shows that clog up their tired old schedule? Or are you past caring??

It's Goodnight Evening Session

the irony is that to 'freshen up' radio 1 really needs to sort out its weekend shows. lamacq's show is the only show to play mainstream alternative (for want of a better label) music. although the format (or the dj) may need a change, axing it is not the answer.

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

Radio 1 have been on the downward slope for years, their obsession with getting student alternative and clubber markets have totally killed all of their other (far larger and stable) family and, well, normal people areas of teh country
they can't go back on their decisions that have caused this as it would be admitting defeat, so they're trying anything they can think of to claw back listeners, many who are now off with other radio shows, or even headed over to digital tv and teh huge list of music TV shows and acess to local radio stations such as the London based ststions, XFM etc

but really, if you're in a household that's paying for a TV licence then you're funding Radio 1, so phone/write/e-mail in to have your say, as Mark & Lard often say, it's public service broadcasting, you're the public, so demand the service you want, see?

ollie.

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

it's a fucking shame. there really is no music station or radio show out there - not that my radio's picking up anyway - with the musical diversity and optimism of the evening session. i'd have thought that ratings-wise it'd be one of their most popular shows. ah well, fuck the listeners, eh. what matters is that elusive and somewhat fictional demographic. perhaps in the sesh's place they'll get sara cox and victoria hervey to present a light-hearted comedy round-up of their social lives that week. joy.

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

I wanna know what the hell people outside London, and now Birmingham, are going to do for alternative music radio. Manchester struggles as it is. There IS only the Evening Session and R1 Rock Show. Now only the ludicrously houred R1 Rock Show. Fools.

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

Birmingham? Am I missing something?
What's this then?

Anyway, surely they will replace it with something equally 'indie'. Seems an odd time to stop it when there appears to be some kind of mainstream resurgence.

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

and john peel!

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

You *could* fork out for a Digital Radio, atm you're looking at £45-£60 for a PC based wavefinder and £99 for a EVOKE-1 Videologic portable job. Whereever Emap or capital have a digital multiplex, they usually rebroadcast XFM. There's a list at www.ukdigitalradio.com .

The quality isn't too hot though, the sound of XFM in bristol is atrocious, due to low bitrates and high processing. XFM itself isn't as alternative as it would like to make out in its newsletter. The BBCs new digital stations (1X and 6music) are churning out stuff that is far more leftfield, albeit probably not to your taste.

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

listen to John Kennedy on Xfm.

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

It's the end of the era for radio 1. I understand it needs some changes, but surely getting rid of one of the best shows is not the way to go!

Next thing we know, Lamacq and Whiley will be gone. Might as well listen to fucking virgin radio...

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

It seems odd that despite the declining number of clubbers (i mean at specialised clubs like cream - dickhead cheese clubs are of course popular still!) that the whole weekend is given to dance music, and yet with the proof that indie/rock and alt music are thriving at reading/leeds radio one decide that the only sensibly timed show has to go. Sure the sesh wasn't perfect for everyone but lamacq did a fine job of plugging new bands and uniting many different genres. where there are seperate shows for each shitty dance genre, he managed to play indie/rock/nu-metal/pop-punk/recently emo old and new bands as well as some dance, experimental and hip hop music. i'll miss it because realistically i'm never going to be allowed to listen to music radio on my family digital tv. peel is of course ace but its a different field and its on too late.

this is what i'd do

mon: 8.00 -12.oo lamacq live, the above continues with real live sets at maida vale rather than some taped gig from last week.
tues 8.00 - 10.00 radio one rock show
10.00 - 12.00 the lock up
12.00 - 2.00 new show based around extreme metal/hardcore

wed 8.00 - 10.00 the breezeblock
10.00 - 12.00 john peel
12.00 -2.00 giles peterson

thurs 8.00 - 11.00 john peel
11.00 - 1.00 andy kershaw makes his glorious comeback

friday nite - they could and should revamp the dance coverage but i couldn't really give a shit

ditto sat

sun

8.00 - 10.00 indie chart run down
10..00 - 12.00 club chart rundown

everyone's happy!

Re: It's Goodnight Evening Session

And if you look at the sales figures, all dance music magazines are down whilst Kerrang! etc. are way, way up, NME about level. Indie and rock haven't been as strong in years. This is backed up by there being so much 'alternative' music on daytime Radio 1 (compared to 4 years ago, or Capital Radio). Which is possibly why there's less need for the Evening Session.

Personally I never listen, simply because I wouldn't hear much that I don't hear all the time on xfm and mainly because it's on at the time when I want to watch TV. If it was on 6-8 I'd probably listen to it on my way home from work.

I wouldn't agree that the Breezeblock should be on at 8-10, but they must, MUST keep it, along with John Peel and Mark & Lard. I'm also glad they're keeping Lamacq Live, which is the only Session programme I listen to.

And I'd also agree that the weekend schedule is a joke, I know better than to turn on after 6 on a Friday (well, after 3 on a Friday actually), as it's either shit (stand up Jamie Theakston and Nemone) or relentless commercial club wank. Although actually it's not all bad, but it's all aimed at clubbers, and I much prefer the type of stuff played by xfm of a Friday evening (The Remix/The Rinse). Anyway, whatever.

Martin.

It's Goodnight Evening Session

I don't know if it's been said already, but there's an online petition been set up.

http://www.petitiononline.com/p247lm/petition.html

It may be a little bit pointless at this stage, but there's no harm in signing it.

It's Goodnight Evening Session

This whole thing makes a travesty of common sense. I would never fall into the trap of saying 'oh, don't give us more of that dance/ R&B/ whatever bollocks', because Radio 1 should cater for everything, not just what I like.

But the things that I personally DO like came to me (and still do) through the Evening Session. It has been my musical education and I will be utterly lost without it. It's all very well reading about stuff in the (ever-declining) NME, but you can't hear a newspaper.

I've signed the petition for what it's worth, but I know what Radio 1 are like when they make their mind up about something.

Still, at least Sara Cox will be around for a bit longer, eh? (Jumps off bridge)

Cheers,
Damian.
