Where to start?

These two

Lateralus

Aenima

You might not like them. There's something a bit monotonous and ill formed about Tool. Try hiring one of these from the your library rather than buying something out-right.

I shall

Thank you. Anybody sound a bit like them, but are better?

king crimson?

i really dont much like tool. the vocals always seem a bit cock rocky, the music a bit one paced.

but i havent full indulged them myself.

not a billion miles from deftones, who are a million times better.

Righteo

cheers alcxxk

like the deftones?

er? i agree with the million times better part (i just can't get into tool, even though they sample my favorite bill hicks quote), but pray tell, how are they similar?

& does tool have a cult following out there like they do here?

& for starters martbowski, get their first album. aenima isn't bad either.

"not a billion miles from deftones"
ie theres a strong possibility that tool fans will like deftones, and that peoplewould prefer deftones.

they the similarity of
vaguely gothic, sometimes claustrophobic, heavy guitars
sometime use of heavy riffs in awkward time signatures

and on a superficial level, maynard from tool does vocals on the deftones song "the passenger".

Schism

is a good song to start with.

I don't think they're very good though. Many of the songs are long and boring. Plus the singer Maynard James Keenan Ivory Wayans writes bad lyrics about revolutionary ideas like 'christianity is bad' and 'people are like parasites'.

Crappest lyrics this side of Trent Reznor! But if you happen to like Trent Reznor and monotony, buy all of Tool's albums today!

i dont really

see many similarities between tool and deftones. by the way, the music is repetitive, but i dont find it monotonous. its quite detailed and complicated (hence the term 'math rock') but theres a lot to enjoy. go for lateralus/aenima....

there are some people that just dont get it unfortunately, but that shouldnt stop you from checking it out.

they aren't like

Deftones at all. Apart from that song with Maynard signing on it. Both are pretty average in a big shorted American skate park way.

thats

the sort of short sighted opinion ive come to expect from people on this forum. its always interesting to see how people critique a band without actually mentioning the music.

Sorry

I just couldn't be bothered to type out why I don't like their dull, repetitively long and pretentious songs.

It was

A sad day when earlier this year I listened again to Aenima and Lateralus which had previously been my favourite ever albums and thought they were just alright. Still good and some tunes are still great, they are just not fantastic to me anymore.

actually mentioning the music

I slapped on Lateralus again after reading this thread and to be fair up until the Parabola tracks I like it a lot (despite Maynard). It really starts to drag after that though. Adam Jones is a really good guitarist. He does a lot with a few notes.

A band has to be really good to be able to put 80 good minutes on one cd.

Thesaurus

I'm going to stop using the word 'good'.

who ever...

started the comparison between tool and deftones?? what the fuck ,they are NOTHING like, the only similarities are the fact they are american, and they use guitars. probably thin kof some others too but it will have nothing to do with the music. deftones follow the simple verse chorus, heavy bit, end, formula. tool however are fuckin crazy n go off on one . i like both bands but i would NEVER have compared the two. stupid!

often

things like that are people drawing associations which have nothing to do with the sound of the bands-rather their place/associations with other bands

"just don't get it"?

what are they, an intelligence test?

John Maynard Keynes

In this review, for once that usually-irritating diCrescenzo asshole sums up my view of Tool in pretty amusing fashion:

http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/t/tool/lateralus.shtml

Everything they do just sounds so horribly calculated and passionless. Complication for the sake of complication. Dead inside. Like music made by robots.

well you

could say that about electronic music. and youd be talking shit. and since when did pitchfork become the barometer for decent reviews?needlessly controversial without fail. that review is another example of junk personality journalism.

duh

Electronic music isn't made by robots now is it? Calculated? Divvnt be daft.

I quite like Pitchfork. For some reason I usually only read reviews of stuff i've already bought but they are often spot on.

yawn

I like the way you just argued with something I wasn't saying then. I hate this forum.

without fail?

no
youre wrong
maybe you only read it when youre linked to it by people who are pissed off?
plenty of their reviews are, like, aboy how they like a good album n stuff.

im starting to think that You Are Stupid.

alcxxk

are you looking around for my posts on things? because you seem to be popping up everywhere. look, its just my opinion of pitchfork, you dont have to like it. i often look at pitchfork and they often give needlessly savage reviews of rather amazing albums-e.g look at their reviews for weezer's better albums. its just stupid sometimes. and alcxxk, whats with the personal attacks just because i dont agree with you? just grow up.

no

i dont look for your posts. the just seem to be there, saying needlessly het up things that i disagree with.

well lets just leave it

id rather be discussing music i like than having petty little encounters like this.

I Reccon

Schism is about their only good song, not that I've listened to them much though. I find listening to them a bit like swimming through syrup.

i 'reccon' you're wrong

Having never listened to them much, how can you claim that Schism is about their only good song? It's an easy choice just because it's one of the singles of Lateralus.

Tool are my favourite band. I'm amazed that most people here seem to find them boring and passionless. I think the songs are powerful, passionATE and interesting. Danny Carey is one of the best drummers in the world and not many other rock singers can hold a note for 30 seconds (see The Grudge). I love Aenima and Lateralus.

that ^

looks like it was written by the character from the pitchfork review.

LMAO

See above

You can revel in your LMAO abreviations all you want. I'm just a student from a university (warwick) expressing mes opinions. J'aime le francais.

do you know

chris mcmath? he does english and writes for the paper and has a radio show.

I'm sorrry

we were being mean. You don't have to justify liking Tool - I know a lot of people do.

It just seems like once people start relying on technical ability to suggest "no honestly this band is actually objectively good", they start losing the point of listening to music.

That's what I keep trying to say

Steve Vai! Dream Theater! Bad!

toooool

their scary..

All I own of tool

is 'opiate'. I like it quite a lot. Apart from that dreadful anti-drugs song tacked on the end.

so boring.......

they just dont hold your attention and from that they just bore the hell out of me, and i cant even listen to a whole song never mind a album.

so i think they are over rated and just plain dull, but schism is ok, just ok though nothing special.

.

definitely start with aenema - songs like aenema itself are a pretty good intro

then go onto lateralus, and go back to undertow. only go for opiate if you are really into them

Final word:

http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=1829

hehehehe.

out of curiosity, does tool have a bizarrely big cult following out there like they do/used to over here?

Tool Rool

Quite a difficult band to get into if you're not into that type of thing. The trick is not to listen to as if they are playing songs, don't just listen to the riff and main lyric.

What you gotta do is listen to the drums, everything is built up around that and if you can get the tribal feel that pervades almost all tool tunes, you will find a much more rewarding to listen to rather than saying "he's not a very good guitarist" or "he's not singing something i can relate to".

Tool are about more than what is actually sung and played on guitar

Each to their own...

Wow, just goes to show how people have such totally different views on things. Admittedly you wouldn't get to see them in small venues these days (and hardly ever in the UK) but when I first saw them live (12 years ago - shows they've got staying power!) they were the most intense and passionate band I'd EVER seen. Opiate and Undertow I'd say to start with, not just cause they're the first ones but cause I reckon they're the most accessible albums for folk who haven't heard owt by them before. But give it a proper try, seriously...

I think

the guitaring is really good, as is the bass and drumming. That doesn't always make a good song though. But yes screw the words. Screaming for 30 seconds, whoop de doo! Look how fast Steve Vai is!

Again....

...I think he's got an incredible (singing) voice...just listen to tracks like Sober - I had to increase my vocal range by 2 notes when we used to cover that in a crap school band :-)
