midnite vultures is best.
then sea change
mutations
mellow gold
odelay
stereopathic soul manure
one foot in the grave
but not guero, its a pile of recycled shite made because of the slightly bad reaction to the actually quite incredible sea change. beck is clearly a bit embarassed about it and thus thinks we want more odelay style hijinks but without the songs actually being good. thats where being a scientologist gets you
One foot in the grave
Mutations
Mellow Gold
Odelay
Sea Change
Midnight Vultures
Guero
Stereopathitic... (although it has 'rowboat' one of his best songs)
im firmly of the opinion atht mellow gold wins at life. listening back to odelay, shits pretty patchy.
mutations is pretty dull apart from the distorto bass thing at the end and tropicalia. of and nobodys fault, which is generally the hilight of him live.
um
so my ranking:
i'm disgusted by all the low ratings given for midnite vultures. you're obviously all repressed stereotypical stiff upper lippers who are afraid to embrace the mighty androgynous lovecock that is Prince.
would anyone by any chance have an MP3 of the 15 minute Beck song he did for the Dior Homme fashion show....if you go to www.dior.com and click through on 'for men' then to 'for your headphones' you can play it - it's really great
I really like Guero, but I definitely agree that Beck has made two masterpieces- Odelay and Sea Change and several consistantly excellent albums. One Foot in the Grave is something of a campfire sing-a-long acoustic album.
I would say...
Odelay
Sea Change
Mutations
Midnite Vultures/ Guero
Mellow Gold
One Foot in the Grave
Stereopathetic Soulmanure- (weird, but generally good and has some great songs).
There are NO bad Beck albums. Some of them may be a little, ahem, difficult, but none are bad.
If you're new to Beck then Odelay is probably the best place to start.
Side note: last night I decided my two favourite things in life were Beck and cheese. I then went through quite a lengthy debate in my head to decide if I had to give up one of them which it would be.
....okay, the choice was would I rather never eat cheese again (and man-alive I love the cheese) including all cheesey products such as pizza and cheese cake, OR would I rather never ever listen to Beck again.
I decided I would rather give up cheese than Beck.
Odelay is one the best albums ever. Fact. START HERE!
But Midnite Vultures is the filth shcecks! It made me the hollywood_freak i am today (track 5 btw)
If you're gotta start some where Odelay is best. if you're liking the funkier side go for midnite vultures. if you don't go for anything else but probably Mutations or mellow gold.
a tape, from before I got the minidisc and still used a walkman, with Midnite Vultures then Marvin Gaye-Let's Get It On. These two albums were meant to go onto a tape together.
I like all his albums but have played Sea Change more than any other over the last few years.
to answer that
we'd have to know which ones you already own. surely.
i would say:
midnite vultures is best.
then sea change

guero
i hypothesise that one foot in the grave would come above odelay. but iev not actually got the album.
!
One foot in the grave is his best. You can hear the "poverty" in which it was recorded(I don't know if hewas poor as a kid or not but it is great)
Obviously
"Odelay" is the best. Not just Beck's best but actually one of the best albums ever made.
My personal ranking:
Odelay
Mellow Gold
Mutations
Sea Change
Midnite Vultures
Guero
Don't own the others...

Mutations
Odelay
Mellow Gold
One Foot In The Grave
Sea Change
Guero
Midnite Vultures
Mutations
Mutations is definitely the best, if only for the track We Live Again. Gorgeous.
Bad Beck
There are NO bad Beck albums. Some of them may be a little, ahem, difficult, but none are bad.

Side note: last night I decided my two favourite things in life were Beck and cheese. I then went through quite a lengthy debate in my head to decide if I had to give up one of them which it would be.
well?
go on then, which one?
OMG!!!
the debate will never end on that front...
there's odelay and then there's catherdral city.
Of only there was such a thing as Goats-Beck
.
Gueruyere?
drum roll...
....okay, the choice was would I rather never eat cheese again (and man-alive I love the cheese) including all cheesey products such as pizza and cheese cake, OR would I rather never ever listen to Beck again.
I decided I would rather give up cheese than Beck.
I then ate some cheese.
In bed.
Hear-Ye-Hear-Ye
Beck has arrived.
Odelay is one the best albums ever. Fact. START HERE!
But Midnite Vultures is the filth shcecks! It made me the hollywood_freak i am today (track 5 btw)
