but not guero, its a pile of recycled shite made because of the slightly bad reaction to the actually quite incredible sea change. beck is clearly a bit embarassed about it and thus thinks we want more odelay style hijinks but without the songs actually being good. thats where being a scientologist gets you

im firmly of the opinion atht mellow gold wins at life. listening back to odelay, shits pretty patchy.
mutations is pretty dull apart from the distorto bass thing at the end and tropicalia. of and nobodys fault, which is generally the hilight of him live.

One foot in the grave is his best. You can hear the "poverty" in which it was recorded(I don't know if hewas poor as a kid or not but it is great)

I really like Guero, but I definitely agree that Beck has made two masterpieces- Odelay and Sea Change and several consistantly excellent albums. One Foot in the Grave is something of a campfire sing-a-long acoustic album.

Bad Beck
There are NO bad Beck albums. Some of them may be a little, ahem, difficult, but none are bad.
If you're new to Beck then Odelay is probably the best place to start.
Side note: last night I decided my two favourite things in life were Beck and cheese. I then went through quite a lengthy debate in my head to decide if I had to give up one of them which it would be.

But Midnite Vultures is the filth shcecks! It made me the hollywood_freak i am today (track 5 btw)
If you're gotta start some where Odelay is best. if you're liking the funkier side go for midnite vultures. if you don't go for anything else but probably Mutations or mellow gold.

I've got
a tape, from before I got the minidisc and still used a walkman, with Midnite Vultures then Marvin Gaye-Let's Get It On. These two albums were meant to go onto a tape together.
I like all his albums but have played Sea Change more than any other over the last few years.
