Recording songs full of snarling guitars and 60s hooks with a thumping 4/4 beat has been the recipe for success for many a band. Sadly Knoxville four-piece
Superdrag lack the mystery ingredient that makes the combination work so well for
Weezer,
Fountains of Wayne and
Teenage Fanclub - bands that cast a long shadow over ‘
Last Call for Vitriol’.
Technically the ’Drag don’t put a foot wrong, and that’s where the problem lies. Every note, beat and lyric is wearily predictable. There are some brighter moments - the Beach Boys-esque ‘Way Down Here Without You’ being the most notable - but on the whole ‘Last Call for Vitriol’ makes Oasis sound original and alternative.
Clearly
you are completely wrong, as this is one of the best power pop albums ever.
