Last night I went to see a folk/blues/country/singer singwriter night and I had a great time.
I missed the first act bar the last song so can't comment apart from he tried to explain relativity.
The next two acts were fairly standard blues rock which got the foot tapping but nothing else.
The main fault of the Music Cafe is that it's very unintimate, there is a balcony area with plenty of comfy seating, tables and heating! so unsurprisingly everyone went there. The PA is very good but it doesn't help things really.
Thomas Traux came on with his hornicator in one hand, that thing has to be seen to believe. He reminds me of the commedian Rich Hall in accent mainly and in the ablity of telling funny but warming stories.
He performed one song and then another with his arcane drum machine Sister Spinster in the background.
By the third song he decided that if the people wern't coming to the music then he would take it to them, so with his guitar (his only instrument not homemade!) in hand he bounced all around the balcony area serenading random audience members.
Once back on stage he played his guitar using a pocket fan, then played another few songs with guitar, hornicator and another contraption his Stringaling.
After rousing applause you forget that there's another band to go, The Ralfe band who did not match Truax but came mighty close.
A heady mix of of folk, rock and country a good description would be a more Eastern European folky Arcade Fire.
An excelleant song included the old starting slow then speading right up rhythm of Russian folk, and the Mandolin and Violin were used to wonderful effect (much better then our PM!)
So and excellent night in all, and with the new licensing laws stating that night meant we could go back to the pub for some post gig pints!
Ah
I'd forgotten all about the pocket-fan. It's amazing!
