Kristin Hersh's kick-arse new band 50 Foot Wave have ushered in yet another new chapter in the development of digital music by making their latest EP available completely free to fans through their website, www.throwingmusic.com. The new songs feature Hersh's trademark wriggly time signatures and stop-start song structures, with some driving mega-distorted girl riffing and (of course) her distinctive 50-fags-a-day singing voice.
The band say: "With 'Free Music' 50 Foot Wave is seeking new earballs. We thought it'd be interesting to ask for your energy & enthusiasm rather than your money and see what happens. To that end, please share this music in any and every way you see fit. Burn CDs, post the mp3s, seed Torrents - whatever's comfortable for you. It's an experiment. Who knows how it will go? Wheee!"

although, to play along, the Manics gave away a free EP of brand new material (recorded especially) via their website back in March/April time.
