Have The Stereophonics Become Horribly Muso?

I ask this as everytime you hear their recent tracks you get the impression that they haven't heard anything recorded after 1974.

I also think that in the late 90's that they along with Travis were pushed to the top at the expense of other bands.

Also It's about time these two dinosaur's were killed once and for all.

Is *that* your definition of "muso"????

Re: Have The Stereophonics Become Horribly Muso?

Yes to the first sentence. i think everyone knows that, including the NME review of the current single if i remember rightly.

Yeah, Travis are dull. But I can understand why they're so big. *remembers crowd of people sing sing sing sing-ing*
And from what i heard of the their new stuff it seems there might even be a rocking one on the next album. i still hold out some hope.
I would, however, be more than happy to see the Stereophoneys wiped out by a giant asteroid.

Re: Have The Stereophonics Become Horribly Muso?

The first Phonics album was quite good but they've gradually turned to dogshit.

That said, Maybe Tomorrow is really growing on me. I might commit suicide now.

Re: Have The Stereophonics Become Horribly Muso?

I don't think the Stereophonics are that bad, but they're not that good either - I think a lot of bands get held up by the british music press(i) to knock them down again, because it's in our culture and (ii) because of the paucity of really, *really* good bands.

...or the scant coverage of really, *really* good bands ;)

Anyway, I think the Phonics have written a couple of great tunes, no denying that, but I do get bored of Kelly's voice... sure it's unique and distinctive, but it's pretty one dimensional. He always, always sings in the same way so much so that it's impossible to listen to an entire album in one go, because everything blends together...

...his fucking hairstyle is more dynamic than his vocal range.

Re: Have The Stereophonics Become Horribly Muso?

both the phonics and travis are as bland and pointless as each other selling coffee table music to the same people that buy robbie williams and later day chilli peoples.

Re: Have The Stereophonics Become Horribly Muso?

Aw come on, just because bands like Travis and the Stereophonics have been successful at crossing over into the mainstream is no real reason to slag them off.

Okay, so the Stereophonics' songs are pretty indistinguishable nowadays, and Travis (and Coldplay and David Gray) are unlikely to change their winning formula in the near future, but surely you can't deny that each band has come up with some fucking great songs.

Just because a band enjoys great success is no reason to stop liking what they do, is it such a crime to have a broader appeal than Kings of Leon, the BMRC or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

And for the record, I hate Robbie "fucking" Williams as much as the next person.

Probably more.

Re: Have The Stereophonics Become Horribly Muso?

I'm no Stereophonics fan. I quite liked the first album, mainly due to the lyrical content and the fact that Kelly Jones wrote some smashing melodies.

On that note, I'm quite happy that bands like Stereophonics and Coldplay have hits, it makes MTV just a little more varied, and can (believe it or not) make way for other bands who might suit musical elitists (like myself) more than "Generic RnB act # 86787". They love what they do, and should be allowed to do so...I mean, you can't say that Coldplay's "Clocks" doesn't have a pretty piano riff thingy. Having broad appeal is not a crime. At all.

As for Kings of Leon: Stop playing, you're bloody awful!

Re: Have The Stereophonics Become Horribly Muso?

To be honest i just mentioned those bands as three examples who've recently been broadly hailed by the music press as "the saviours of rock and roll as we know it" ...although frankly I doubt any of them have the potential for longevity beyond a halfway decent second album.

- although they're all probably on their fourth and just broke through or something, completely disproving my point :)
