i got it through the post today and was glad to realise that juicebox is the worst song on the album. i haven't made my mind up on the rest of it yet but it doesn't seem to be too bad. whats the general consensus about it on here? i think 'you only live once' and 'razorblade' seem ok.
.
I suppose the problem is, can I listen to the album without thinking, 'this is the Strokes'...?
No, I can't. First impressions seem to say it's not as horrid as I thought it might be, though I can't really say I'm that impressed. I do enjoy 'Ask Me Anything' and I like the overall sound of 'Electricityscape,' though (very surprisingly- it's a borderline Muse sound).
One thing I was really surprised about was 'Ask Me Anything'. It reminds me a bit of The Magnetic Fields.
its the exact
same riff as End has No End.
but just slower.
i really love
it. its not a radical departure from what they've done before but its different enough to be interesting. plus the songs are really strong and fucking cool.
no
.
You're right, it is very similar- but better, I'd say.
i really enjoy it
but it's way too long.
lose the last three or four songs, and you've got yourself an ace album.
FIOE
I really like it. Not all of the songs were new to me (I kne wover half well), and I think like those songs did, the album will grow on me.
It'll be one where it seems better and better the more you get to know it.
I don't get why the music press keep saying it doesn't sound like them - half of the songs could have been on ROF, I think.
I think maybe Killing Lies and Fear Of Sleep could have been done without though . . .
Can't be bothered
with the Strokes anymore. Actually I haven't been bothered with them for about 3 years.
Might as well just listen to Television and The Velvet Underground innit.
To coin a phrase
the album 'fell into my computer' about six weeks ago. I've since deleted it because it is nearly all awful. If this is the great Strokes comeback it should be strangled at birth.
well if you liked 'is this it'
then i would say this compares pretty well, i think razorblade and you only live once are good songs, but like what someone said up there i think its a couple of songs too long
I really don't
see why people care about the Strokes anymore
man
the strokes were so 2001.
not cool at all to like anymore.
i rescind my previous opinion.
That's
an idiotic comment to make, isn't it?
Why wouldn't someone 'care about' a band any more? Surely you care about a band because you like them. Are you saying people shouldn't like them any more?
well I just
find them intolerably boring really.
Why comment on them
if you find them intolerably boring.
because
s/he wants others to know that thwy find them intolerably boring.
I really like the new album and new sound.
It could be a bit shorter though.
can't wait to see them at the end of jan.
its
shit. Everyone knew it would be shit, and it is. I think they are going to end up like Oasis. Expectations will always be massive before a new record, just in case they manage to hit top form again. Hopefully, unlike Oasis, they will.
it fails to surprise me that someone
who lists 'indie labels' and 'politics' comes out with a statement as stupid as that.
i suppose you forgot to read the rest of the thread before you typed 'everyone knew it would be shit' then?
lists blah blah
as 'interests' on your profile.
.
What's wrong with 'indie labels' and 'politics'?
Judging this album impartially was always going to be quite a task. Had it been released by a new, unknown band I'm sure it would be much more popular within certain aloof circles who will, right now, be the first to slag it off.
Disclaimer: I'm calling anyone in particular 'aloof' here, but we're all aware of the existance of aloofness, I'm sure.
I --at the moment-- haven't found it the best album in the world just yet.
We'll see.
Calm down people
i find it funny the way people loudly proclaim how they don't understand the 'bother' about the strokes but then they make quite emotive comments on how they dislike the band. Seems like they're bothered to me....
The think with the strokes is that they have never claimed to be an experimental band but people always judge them against those standards. Swallowing the rantings of the press and comapring them to classic bands such as the velvet underground doesn't help either....
Having just bought the album and listened to it twice I think its rather good - sounds like the strokes I agree, but then again every Beefheart album sounded like Beefheart..... not that I'm comparing the genius of beefheart to the strokes! Some pretty nifty pop songs in the album along with the ever abundant catchy guitar solo... Plus its progressed just enough not to be boring.
'Nuff said.
here here
i agree. did beefheart ever have any commercial success? i don't know anything about him, apart from its psychedelic.
i
loved the first strokes record. but this is just..well...terrible. its nothing to do with experimentation, or how they aren't 'cool' anymore. its just crap. like i'm pretty sure most people knew it would, based on juicebox.
it's
not bad, it's just not great. the average media response has been about 7/10. i'd plump for a middling six.
it's a shame after all the initial fuss 4 and a half years ago.
pitchfork review
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/s/strokes/first-impressions-of-earth.shtml
what a pile of bollocks. pitchfork can get it so wrong sometimes,as shown here, but others make the best decisions of any music mag, putting sufjan at number 1 album of the year.
.
What's wrong with that pitchfork review?
its
wrong
can we
just call it bitchfork as we only ever moan about it.
i
find Pitchfork shit most of the time.
It really is the 'cool' place for reviews. Those endless dialogues they write that go on and on, ripping into NME bummed bands.
im not sure
about that, but they can so far off the mark sometimes.
most
nme bummed bands deserving a ripping though.
but yeah pitchfork is shite
.
I don't mind Pitchfork so much. A handful of their contributors are very good.
Admittedly I do wish I had the time to read a couple of their reviews in one evening, though.
im gonna see them in febuary i think
that pitchfork review is spot on
the lyrics suck but the band are tight
sack julian boys
You're
an absolute fucking idiot.
Why the fuck shouldn't someone express a dislike for something? What fucking planet are you from?
PS sorry if this seems rude I'm quite drunk
I listened to the album 4 times now...
and I absolutely hate it! I don't know why i put myself through it but i felt i really had to give it a chance... the vocals ended up grating me painfully, and the guitar solos made me think of spinal tap when nigel plays his guitar with a violin... i never expected the strokes to an album as bad as this one. the first one made me dance, the second listen, this one... made me want to be in silence.
Jesus.
I'm sorry about that...
....
I got it yesterday and popped it in promising myself to make sure I heard the whole thing, I liked the first couple of tracks and 'Ask Me Anything', but by track 11 I was in agony. It's fucking shameful.
