Shove your Arctic Monkeys internet phenomenom back up yer ass... Weezer top American download chart.

In a land five or six ago, before the internet was full of kids with angular haircuts and tattoos, there was just Weezer posting blogs and mp3s and their fans - the Netscape-tshirt-wearing geeks who sat on Napster for weeks waiting for live tracks and b-sides to download on snail-like dial-up internet connections which made funny noises. So it's apt that in the biggest year for legal downloading that the kings still have their crowns.

The biggest selling digital track in the USA for 2005 with a whopping a 961,981 sales was 'Beverly Hills' by Weezer. These figures are according to Nielsen SoundScan so it is a FACT!

However, just to confuse things, Gwen Stefani was number one in the Digital Songs category with 1,171,672 copies of 'Hollaback Girl' sold. The Digital Songs chart rates all versions of a song. The Digital Tracks category is for a single version of a track.

The Top Selling Digital Tracks for 2005 were:

1. Weezer - Beverly Hills (961,981)
2. Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl (921,704)
3. Black Eyed Peas - My Humps (892,704)
4. Kelly Clarkson - Since You Been Gone (853,948)

8. Kanye West - Gold Digger (815,394)
9. Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams (803,790)
10. Nickelback - Photograph (795,419)

Top Selling Digital Songs for 2005 were:

1. Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl (1,171,672)
2. Kanye West - Gold Digger (1,089,665)
3. Weezer - Beverly Hills (961,988)

All that's left to say is Godbless America, and thank you for all the culturally significant music you consume like burgers and then throw up on the rest of the world.

She's got humps and no words?

Is your sister a camel?

So

Weezer had a version of that song that sold 7 'copies' ?

that Weezer song is TERRIBLE though

is it supposed to be ironic? It just sounds like Crazytown or something.

.

Hmm.

I like it. Even though it plods on with no change of direction.

Hmm.

its quite a conservative list

of songs though isn't it, but technlogical revolutions don't signify seismic cultural shifts. I just hope people don't think that.

Vive le imagination.

didnt they ahve a song called

'Drugs' out this year or 'Drurgs' as it was sung. I lost interest after the first album sorry - maybe I'm not geeky enough

no......

they're really fun live! hearing the intro to sweater song at brixton was nearly one of the greatest moments of my life.

Fair enough...

But the Sweater Song is a good song. Beverly Hills is shit.

It was called:

"We are all on drugs"

i kind of

liked 'beverley hills'......... *and then goes to hide in a corner*

It's the fact

that Nickleback made it onto the list. That's depressing all by itself.

Sorry to be dim

but I don't quite get the difference between a "Track' and "Song". And does that mean that Weezer fans downloaded 961,981 (tracks) + 961,988 (songs) or an average of those. I'm confused. Black Eyed Peas sold one more song? I don't get it.

Can you delete these when somebody points out you are a fool?

not to be rude but

read the article again...

I got it

didn't get it at first like, but the songs include all versions, I'm guessin all re-mixes etc., where track is just the track being released.... hence 2 different charts.
I think that's what its all about anyway, or am I just being a fool 2?

Yeah, that's what I was getting at above

If all individual types of "track" sold for a song make up the total number of "songs" sold... it means somewhere out there there's a[n un]lucky person with a unique version of 'Don't Phunk with me Heart'

So the tables have likely come from the Fiction Department, I reckon.

Thanks

That's what I thought, but then thought that can't be right because that's silly. What if a band does a cover of a song, i.e. Alien Ant Farm Smooth Criminal (sorry couldn't think of anything else). Would that be considered a Michael Jackson "song"? That sort of makes sense?

Weezer Own!

I love that band. Sure Beverley Hills isn't their finest moment but so what, the fact that a single of theirs was so popular gave extra exposure to them so hopefully it'd lead to more people finding more of their material...maybe a few lucky souls get to experience that amazing giddy happiness I got when I heard 'Pink Triangle' for the first time.
And their show at Hammersmith Apollo in August was so far beyond perfect that it was almost unfair to anyone else that might've done a gig last year.

Covers...

Please tell me that 'Since You've Been Gone' by Kelly Clarkson is a cover of the Rainbow power-ballad-punch-the-air-air-guitar classic! This would be great news as this girl always looks so upset in her videos. I guess its more likely than 'Photograph' by Nickleback being a cover of the Weezer track from the Green album.

As someone pointed out above - that's pretty hilarious that 7 people bought a remix of Beverley Hills. Or have I missed the point too?

Weezer still have it live...

...fo' sho'. 'Make Believe' was definitely a bit more miss than hit, but I just can't hate them.

but surely...

EVERYONE has been talking about kelly clarkson...? that's what it said on the telly. And sadly it's an insipid avril lavigneish grrlrantpowerrockspeedballad type thing.
Look on the sunny side though, no j*m*s bl*nt, we contained it like bird flu!

I hope they print this news...

...in mile-high letters on Pitchfork.

Beverly hills is nowhere near the best song on Make Believe, which is still a fairly good album....

hahahahaha

black eyed peas? TURBO PANTS!
