The Who's Pete Townshend may be losing his hearing, but it weren't the live rock WUT(?) done it, it was rollin' around with earphones on...
Despite his frustrations at suffering from deafness, reports which suggested it was due to live shows appear to be untrue.
The 60-year-old says, "I wake up realising my own particular kind of damage was caused by using headphones in the recording studio, not playing live. Earphones do the most damage. This is a peculiar hazard of the recording studio. There are often accidental buzzes, shrieks and poor connections that cause temporary high-level sounds."
"One might have to work for several hours to perfect a studio performance. As the work progresses, the ears shut down and one needs a higher volume." However, he continues to explain the catch-22 "If you stop to rest your ears, and you need to for 36 hours to do any good, you lose the current performance. It's a tough call."

Uh
Didn't his hearing actually get damaged by Keith Moon's exploding drumkit?
..
The Keith Moon/Smothers Brothers thing was temperory, It was about another 10 years before it really got fucked.
Maybe I'm missing the point...
...but don't old people just get deaf because they are old?
Kind of...
Loud noises kill the bits of the ear that "hear", if you're exposed to loud noises your whole life it's going to do a lot of damage. Of course those cells do die as you age anyway, but not so common to end up really hard of hearing unless you live until you're senile and spitting saliva over the bingo board on a Sunday as you sort out your false teeth. Yeah.
But being in...
...one of the notoriously loudest rock bands of all time can't really of helped much can it.
different sort of deafness
Old people do get deaf because they're old, but mostly they only get high-frequency hearing loss - the top range of your hearing decreases gradually with age. Noise-related hearing damage occurs mostly in the midrange, which is much worse because that's the bit you tend to pay most attention to.
why do you have to
keep reminding me of the earplugs?? it just adds to the pain.
I reckon
That my own hearing has deteriorated since I started the whole live music thing.
get
the airplane earplugs from boots, they're 5quid and super good. they make a huge difference and you can wash them and re-use them. top tip.
they
stick out of your ear though in an uncool fashion.
