After a tiny comeback show under a pseudonym just before Christmas, it's now official: the 'Shaker hath returned.
Now, I loved Kula Shaker, I listened to [debut album] K probably more than What's the Story (Morning Glory) in that particular era, but the second LP was, quite frankly, crud.
It has been unveiled on their site, kulashakermusic.com that they played a small show in the UK's most rock 'n' roll town, Leighton Buzzard, just before Christmas going under the name of The Garcons. Playing new songs on the night, it's currently unknown what the band are actually going to do, but they did release this awesomely informative statement:
"It's official. Kula Shaker has arisen from the bottomless pit. How and why will all be revealed in good time, as this [web] site grows, swells and expands.
"In the meantime join our mailing list and be the first to find out about secret gigs, free downloads and the inside story on what is sure to be their finest hour."
DiScuss: Govinda-gia-gia? Acincta bheda-bheda Tattva? Why?
I agree
'K' is ace. In fact, I'm gonna go listen to it now - on cassette! Proper OLD SKOOL, like.
I'm not sure this is a good idea
but I'm going to see them first chance I get.
Hmmmm
I was in the Dublin Castle just before xmas and the Shakers drummer was drumming (coz thats what drummers do, innit) for some Zep wanna be band. Who were, incidentally, a bit rubbish.
And doesn't their ivory tinkler play with the brothers Gallagher now?
Jay
I'm fairly sure he was. But he wouldn't pass up the chance to do more sickeningly over-the-top hammond organ parts. Would he?
Mama,
Go fetch my gun.
but what
will become of that last Jeevas album reported on a few months back?
Maybe he thinks his influence has grown to Pixies-levels in the time they've been away?
PeeVee will surely agree when I say...
Yay! This is the best news ever!
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
are they going to bring
the 'flaming swastikas' back too?
In the context you're possibly thinking about them in...
... they were a thing of evil. But they were originally a peace symbol, and that's the context in which he talked about them. They never actually used them onstage though, unlike U2 (again I should stress not for bad reasons).
Like I say, not a big fan of the band but they at least deserve defending on this count.
Why
did you feel the need to mention U2? Are you trying to ruin my day?
just kill you
with a slow and painful death
oh
gutted.
Are you all mental?
These were... erm....awful.
I'm not feeling terribly articulate today. Forgive me.
Oh
dear...
Shitting hell
Worst band.....EVER
Only morons and nazis liked those idiots. Jesus wept.
Well...
I'm not a nazi, so I must be a moron. Finally it's confirmed.
sure
you're not a nazi too? There's no shame in it... well, not much...
Hmmm
I liked the 2nd LP more than the 1st. It had The Sound Of Drums AND Mystical Machine Gun on it. Glory days.
I'm feeling a lot of irony on this thread...
right, guys? GUYS??
He looks like Robin Gibb on that pic
Has Bamos come round yet?
Heh...
...this comeback will upset so many people. I can't help but laugh.
I used to love them. Second album was terrible though. He did make an idiot of himself in the press, but at the end of the day an idiot was all... it was quite clear he wasn't someone with extreme-right sympathies. He spent the next five years making that as clear as he could in any interview he did.
Can I think of anything nice to say now? Well, he's a brilliant guitarist.
And
Hayley Mills is his mum. That's nice.
Good fun band.
I always felt sorry that Mills was so obviously stitched up by the tabs over the Nazi thing and that so many people bought it and continue to buy it. How dumb do you have to BE to buy into that stuff, people? Come on.
We liked them a lot more in the US than you lot did in the UK. I think we "got the joke" over here and it seemed to pretty much go lost on all y'all.
Good fun band in their day - not sure whether they could ever regain the same momentum but I hope they give it a go.
OH. MY. GOD.
Best news ever! First gig I ever saw at Cambridge Corn Exchange, will definitely be going if they play round this way
Brilliant news.
Think I’ll grow myself a big ol’ hairy moustache...
Why do you mock us Lord?
Why?! Why?!
i used to live near him..
used to see him in the video shop wearing those silly trousers of his
Now that is just surreal
What I wouldn't have give in my hippe teenage years to have bumped into old 'Crispy' down in Blockbusters. I would have followed him home to the top secret mystical mossy cave he probably lived in with a plethora of strange long prophets. Then he would have played me a tune on the biggest drum ever made, which would also be encrusted with the magical eyes of extinct elephants. Then, obviously, we would have watched his video. The return of Kula Shaker will make us all better people!!! Lookin' fuckin' forward to it!!! HAIL THE 'SHAKER!
hmmm....
If there was one band in history I would have chosen to reform, it would be Kula Shaker.
Actually thats not true it would be Rites of Spring. Actually putting a bit of thought into it, Kula Shaker wouldnt even come into consideration.
But still, this should kick a bit of faux-hippie into the emo kids and modern mods of the day.
i love K
Listened to it recently to know how amazing it was. Im also using Tattva for my music tech corsework
gaah!
Having brought up in the musical black hole that is Leighton Buzzard, and having been back there just before Xmas to see the folks, I can't believe that I missed the first half decent band to play there in my entire lifetime! grr!
BUT!
WHERE ARE GAY DAD BAND?
I think...
...the money from "Joy!" being used in ads will keep Cliff quiet for a bit.
I know that wasn't a serious post but... I actually liked the first Gay Dad album. So did almost all of the press at the time. This kind of got overlooked later on, probably because of Cliff saying things like "Gay Dad are an avatar to aheadness" in interviews...
Why
have you put a picture of one of the gibb brothers (bee gees) up with this article?
gay dad
were superb. along with kula shaker. both had great first albums, but equally it was a pity that they were considered to have too much of a ‘schtick’ i.e. kula shaker with the indian thing and gay dad because... well... THEY WERE CALLED GAY DAD.
Of course, this worked both ways... initially it gained them loads of exposure, but when people start realising you're arrogant as f*ck (cliff with the "avatar" comments and crispian just for being a collosal bender), then they write you off as a ‘gimmick-band’… completely ignoring the fact that both Leisurenoise and K were fantastic records.
shame i don't have enough hours in the day to write about the second records...
love both bands. pity that makes me about as cool as farting in scarlett johansson's face.
