The Independent is to follow in The Observer's footsteps by including a supplement focusing on music - particularly 'independent' music, read on - four times a year.
The magazine is a joint venture with The Association of Independent Music (that's AIM), and both parties are full of confidence for the project.
Arts Editor David Lister, who will edit the new magazine, said: "Independent music and The Independent are a natural fit. Our music pages, which recently won a national award, have long taken a keen interest in indie music and championed the best known indie bands at very early stages in their careers. The indie scene now is more eclectic than ever before and this new music magazine will show its wide range, highlight some of the most pressing issues - and give a sneak preview of upcoming albums."
Alison Wenham of AIM said: "In partnership with The Independent, AIM will give unparalleled access to the vibrant, intelligent, sometimes reckless world of the true independent spirit of the music business, and those artists and music companies who choose independence as a way of life and as a business model, many of them with great success, all of them with passion."
First issue's out on February 3rd. Surely it can't be as awful as the OMM, right?
I try to buy the Indy
But I just give in a lot of the time and end up getting the Guardian/Observer if I buy a paper.
I care about climate change I really do, but it makes fucking boring reading.
I get the impression that
lot of people who went to Polys run the Editorial at the 'indy'
OMM
I don't think it's too bad. It's quite patronising, and has some dodgy artists featured, but it's generally pretty good
independent for indie
heh heh did you see what they did there
Hopefully...
Some of these music critics will be 'critical'.
All they seem to do in the OMM anyway is to lavish praise on one act after another, the music doctor is a twat and why the 10 word reviews at the end?
They give the impression they have never listened to the record, surely they can get rid of some of the sycophantic drivel and expand these reviews.
God I may well be angry next Sunday as it's decided to pour it's love on the new Brit 'indie' scene. So that will be be about 5 pages about how much the Arctic Fucking Monkeys are changing the musical landscape of Britain. Why not just sleep with them if they love them so much?
God I got carried away...
don't worry..
the OMM makes me angry, too.
To be fair
It's not just OMM that's lavishing praise on AM. Everything I fucking read these days to do with them seems to kissing their arse. OK, so they're not the worse band ever, but they're not genius either.
i always get excited by OMM
and it's always utter drivel. And smells of fish/copydex.
then you'd like the indie on sunday review
of the album: two and a half stars. Although - completely got the wrong end of the stick; i.e. I don't reckon that Alex Turner is an internet genius who planned all this...
I was excited and then...
I got to the bit that says the supplement will come out 4 times a year. So all it'll be useful for is interviews and features, rather than reviews, news etc. Shame as I love the Independent.
.
Surely anyone with a keen interest in music would fork out the couple of quid for a reasonable music publication anyway?
Hmmmm
Which would you recommend?
I've never read OMM
But The Guardian as a whole is best for music.
No Shane Ward though....
..
the telegraph arts section is good, though rather limited in content.
The Guardian's lovely
because it prints the perry bible fellowship (www.thepbf.com) and has Alex Kapranos talking bollocks about stuff. Oh, and I'm a sucker for big colourful diagrams
retrohead
this is very very insane for alls groups, fans yfor lamusic .but the indie is this iiinddepenndeennntt!!!!!!ok.
you what?
??
Wah
HUh
Simon Price
Simon Price is by far and away the best music journo on any of the nationals. More often than not his gig reviews have me laughing out loud. I'm really looking forward to this. I reckon it'll be much better than OMM.
Which....
... of course isn't difficult as many people here have pointed out !!
Simon Price Appreciation Society
Yup, seconded.
i once
wrote a letter of complaint to the OMM asking them to retract their award of 'band of the year' to the scissor sisters. more like 'bland of the year'! lol!!!11!!! needless to say they didnt retract it, but they did publish my letter. On the whole the OMM is a bag of wank. Although it occasionally does like some good stuff, like esbjorn svensson trio.
and
Alex Kapranos drives me insane. In his Four Tet review he described Fridge as "not exactly a hoot" because they were (apparently) post-rock which is "not so much a genre as the answer to a pub or dinner party argument about what constitutes the most boring music of all time". GAH!!!!. Die die die. And he gave Madonna 4 stars.
Misfortune
Hmm Scissor Sisters - I once had the misfortune of passing through Brixton tube on my way home just as 5,000 Scissor Sisters' fans came pouring out of the Academy. Vile.
Is Simon Price...
The guy with the Keith Flint hair who writes in the ABC section of the IOS?
If so, he am good.
Indeed
...that is he.
