No, seriously
We've been delightfully informed that the kings of Leeds, ¡Forward Russia! are currently sitting in the Top 20 in the midweek charts.
This is of course, all bound to change by Sunday, but this is our plea: go out, collect as many copies as you can (each from different shops) and keep the single in the top 20 for Sunday. 'Twelve' / 'Four' is out through Dance to the Radio in most good shops (distributed by Vital) and is on both CD and 7".
In a good week for guitar music, the Arctic Monkeys' single seems set to take the top spot while Belle & Sebastian and Richard Ashcroft are looking good for the top ten.
what does guitar music have to do with anything?
richard ashcroft = snore.
still, it'd be nice to see them in the top 40 somewhere.
the charts don't generally house a lot of it anymore
it's good. you negative bastard.
i hope
B & S will have their biggest hit ever !
I think
B & S may well do (I think best so far is #14 for "I'm a Cuckoo")
That said I think "Funny Little Frog" will drop out of the top ten by Sunday. Hopefully 12 or 13 though!
I do really like the song (and the B-side "Meat and potatoes" is ace, too)!
I thought Legal Man was their only 'big' hit
wasn't it in the top 10 or something?
that's was definatel on t'pops
think it was their biggest.
Nope; definitely "...Cuckoo"
Legal Man got to #15 and I'm a Cuckoo got to #14. The Wrapped Up in Books/Your Cover's Blown double A-side is their other top twenty hit (at #20)
They were on Top of the Pops for "Legal Man" but that was more indicative of the fact that it was their first single since the Brit win and were pretty hyped at the time than the eventual chart position.
Believe me, I don't recommend arguing on this. I'm an incredibly anal statistician at times and unquestionably right!
Shhhhhhhhhhhh
we're being mocked!
WHERE'S THE FREAKIN' UNDERSCORE GONE?
Jesus...
OH YEAH
just something i'm trying. Sort my frickin ratings out.
aw
i thought this page would tell me how to do an upside down exclamation mark.
i feel cheated.
¡bastards!
wait. how did that happen?
'negative bastard'
That is a fucking great name to use on DiS. :-D
I don't know about buying multiple copies but I haven't got this so I'll try to pick a copy up. Do Rough Trade and Sister Ray get counted?
how do we do the
upside down excalimation mark?
¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
except
these boards don't like them.
you have to copy and paste them in from word as colin's guide doesn't work in firefox on my non-pink PC.
well..
on Mac OS - Alt & 1
on Windows - Ctrl & Alt & Shift & 1
Nice one!
I had a bet with a couple of workmates that !FR! would go top 20 before Easter so that makes me twice as happy!
only
if we can get them to number 11.
and at 11 - it's Twelve.
or should that be 13?
confuzzled.
it's random
what shops get counted AFAIK. So it's a bit of a gamble.
also
buy the new Cat Power single whilst you're flicking around the shops.
why would we want to buy a single??
singles are a scam. the only reason for anyone to get it is if they LOVE forward, russia and can't wait for the album without exploding.
YES YES YES YES
I just bought it on iTunes and will buy the physical single later in the week.
Journalist in music purchase shocker!
Yo!
I have purchased both the 12" and Cd version... from different shops!!!
well that's good news
i don't listen to the radio or buy singles though...
to say the B&S single is tepid
is like saying that Francis Bacon was 'good with colours'
I think anything in the charts is better than corporate indie guitars or no guitars - just something with a pulse, something ANYTHING that has a meaning and will resonate long after me and you are just a long forgotton footnote from a distant Camden Crawl
waht would happen if we bought something
you didn't like?
hmmm, i was thinking that too
I'm just being an anorak but...
I'm a cuckoo was Belle & Sebastian's biggest hit. It got to number 14. One place better than Legal Man.
this doesn't
really surprise me at all, loads of people i know have heard/like them
am i the only one not all that taken, what are they offering me that is so amazing?
Why
the urge to get them higher in the charts?
But they're rubbish!
Exclamation mark or no. The album is stinky poop.
it's okay
just watered down ATD-I/Rapture sort of thing, but from Leeds
"Why the urge to get them higher in the charts?"
Well, they're unsigned - this is a self-released single. So it's a massive kick in the arse for the majors. As well as this, they're great and deserve the success.
How "corporate indie guitars?"
I mean I'm not overly keen on corporate indie guitars either but it seems a strange accusation to level at Belle & Sebastian, who are on a relatively indie label and are hardly Keane/Coldplay-level chart botherers!
I'm biased in that I've always liked B & S but I actually enjoy their poppier recent records. True FLF borders on being too slick but I think it's a good pop song.
just how "unsigned"??
A quick look at their website contacts page shows that they are not exactly without backing. They have the same PR company as EMI (who pays for that?), they have top booking agents ITB. They have well known management. No doubt a plugging company has been behind much of their radio play
Maybe things are not quite what they seem?
Buy the single if you like it,, not cos they are unsigned!
pre
cisely
and if you're the sort who buys singles.
yo!
correcto - they have some backing but are not signed, so they are therefore unsigned and crabbycrab did indeed speak the truth. i.e. they do not have full record company backing.
Of course, nobody should buy music just because the band are unsigned.
Surely, even a cynic has to admit that a self-released single hitting the mainstream charts (when up against all the fully-major-label-backed stuff) is an unusual triumph?
a triumph
I agree, this is brilliant news for independant music. And Whiskas is a lovely guy - deserves all the success he gets.
Who needs major label backing when you've built up your reputation by solid gigging across the country for the last couple of years?
just how "unsiged"?
The band are unsigned. They do not have a record deal. They do not have any record company giving them money to tour or record their album. What they do have is a publisher but their deal is nothing lucrative. Their PR, booking and management is not record company backed. They are not in talks with anyone and there is nothing hush hush about it. They're unsigned. Please don't speculate in future.
i really hate it when people who don't know anything about a subject passes judgement like this
Their manager believes in them and is risking a lot to make this happen. A top, top man.
Their PR company is working for the very minimum of costs, because they believe in them. That stuff about EMI is completely irrelevant, especially now as they're moving everything in-house.
They took a very, very modest publishing deal from a company who believes in them and have used the money to tour and head into the studio next week to make an album.
Steve at ITB, their booking agent, works his arse off for lots of bands like ¡Forward, Russia! because he believes in them and music is his passion. You really think he's raking it in or something?
They have no radio plugger.
You see, when there are people who truly get behind a band, despite the lack of money or record deal, real things can happen. I just wish the cynics around here would do some of it themselves.
or
if they love the band and want b-sides.
good for
iForward Russia! for getting into the top 20.
if i
buy it on itunes will it make a difference? i have some spare money
i-tunes
a purchase on i-tunes should still be chart-worthy. plus, i'm delighted at how un-scathing this thread has been. thank god.
SELLOUTS
ive only heard a bit of Ãforward russia! but i didnt like it. TAKE THAT dkiener.
what?
you prefer TAKE THAT?
....zing!
Just make sure...
...you search iTunes for iForward, Russia! and not ¡Forward, Russia! as they appear to have got the name wrong...
alternative spellings
eye forward, russia!
aye forward, rush her!
iFour word, Russia!
etc
I just bought it
and it's ace. Definitely a close second in my "Best Songs In The World Ever To Namecheck Einstein" list, after 'Hermann Loves Pauline' by the Super Furries.
And Whiskers is lovely (he promoted my band's first Leeds gig - props to my homeboi, irie, irie, or, indeed, something).
#36?????
hmmm...
Come back to Leeds then!
Stop arsing around in Southernland and do another gig in Leeds then dammit!
I'd love to see Forward Russia becoming ArcticMonkeysingly famous. They're definitely one of the most entertaining live bands I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.
Four...
has got to be one of my favourite tracks at the moment. Twelve comes 3rd behind Kubichek's Taxi.
