Radio 1 are being proactive, again...

You may have noticed this week, that amongst the Britney-a-likes, Retro-ists, Nu-Metal and Pop-Cheese on the BBC Radio 1 playlist, that there has been some little bands, unsigned infact, on their playlist.

Infact, one of the bands, Four Day Hombre, you may have heard us bigging up. And as luck would kinda have it, they cancelled a show on us last minute due to illness but we've got them playing The Windmill in February.

Here are the tracks that're on the playlist..

Four Day Hombre - 'The First Word Is The Hardest'
Jetson - 'Taking Care Of Business'
Mike Celekt - 'Zzoot Zzsoo'
Motley - 'Muddy'
Sweettoof - 'Rubber Glove'
The Vaults - 'She Loves'

You can listen to the tracks on the Radio 1 site, here.

DiScuss: Is this just a clever pr stunt and a way of radio 1 getting in some record label goodbooks? Or is this genuinely proactivism with our license fees? Is this further proof that UM&AH-land needs the media to show it good bands to avoid crap like The Crescent getting record deals?

Re: Radio 1: Unsigned Bands On the Playlist

Thank you for your honesty, constructive criticism and reasoning.. why come here and stay here in the first place?

Re: Radio 1: Unsigned Bands On the Playlist

Sorry, I kinda lost it there for a second... I think R1 are playing the unsigned bands as some kind of trick to make people think they actually give a shit about music.

It's tokenism. Play new bands all the time. Don't just do it for one week with just six sodding bands and make out that it's a revolutionary idea.

There's nothing so ace (for me anyway) as hearing a new act for the first time and being excited about it. And to be fair, Radio 1 does that a bit - in the evenings only. And even then they just got rid of one of the main practioners for no convincing reason.

Grrrr.

Cheers,
Damian.

Re: Radio 1: Unsigned Bands On the Playlist

u should check out Element on Mike Davies Lockup webpage, they were on the shortlist for the unsigned comp, if u like Jeff Buckley or Sparta.

Re: Radio 1: Unsigned Bands On the Playlist

But that'd mean they'd need deejays who actually have taste, understand whats going on out there and have the time to listen to thousands of demoes a week... i'd imagine a lot of meeejah people would prefer the idea of letting record labels filter out the crap, and pr people and pluggers target them with material... its incredibly lazy and hardly a public service approach of running radio when its merely shifting records for major corporations.

and why can't deejays play more old stuff too and less cheese just because it's new??

If you're serious you are demented.

Re: Radio 1: Unsigned Bands On the Playlist

You'll see dude, just remember the name. There's no one out there who even comes remotely close.

must be demented then.

Radio 1: Unsigned Bands On the Playlist

and they've just got rid of Mark and Lard...who's gonna give their frank opinion of the shoddy playlisting techniques on air now?

Radio 1: Unsigned Bands On the Playlist

i prefer radio 2 at the moment. better djs (in my opinion, and better music. well at least its easy listening music rather than pop and the latest 'club' anthem)
