The Brits: The Nominees

The annual multinational back-pat fest, otherwise known as the somecompanyorothersponsored Brit Awards, have just announced their nominees for the event on February 20th, which will be screened by ITV1 the same evening. This is the event where those attending can only have one drink or something stoopid - can't imagine them stopping copious amounts of drugs though, so if you fancy making a quick bob stock up on coke.
The Nominations:
British male solo artist - Badly Drawn Boy; Craig David; David Gray; The Streets; Robbie Williams.
British female solo artist - Sophie Ellis Bextor; Ms Dynamite; Beverley Knight; Alison Moyet; Beth Orton.
British album - Coldplay, Rush of Blood to the Head; Ms Dynamite, A Little Deeper; The Coral, The Coral; The Streets, Original Pirate Material; Sugababes, Angels with Dirty Faces.
British group - Blue; Coldplay; Doves; Sugababes; Oasis.
British single - Atomic Kitten, The Tide is High (Get The Feeling); Gareth Gates, Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake); Gareth Gates, Unchained Melody; Liberty X, Just A Little; Will Young, Anything Is Possible/Evergreen.
British urban act - Beverley Knight; Big Brovaz; Craig David; Daniel Bedingfield; Mis-Teeq; Ms Dynamite; Romeo; Roots Manuva; So Solid Crew; The Streets.
British dance act - Chemical Brothers; Groove Armada; Jamiroquai; Kosheen; Sugababes.
British breakthrough artist - Liberty X; Ms Dynamite; The Coral; The Streets; Will Young.
Pop act - Blue; Enrique Iglesias; Gareth Gates; Pink; Will Young.
International male solo artist - Beck; Eminem; Moby; Nelly; Bruce Springsteen.
International female solo artist - Missy Elliot; Norah Jones; Alicia Keys; Avril Lavigne; Pink.
International album - Eminem, The Eminem Show; Norah Jones, Come Away with Me; Alicia Keys, Songs in A Minor; Pink, Missundaztood; Red Hot Chili Peppers, By The Way.
International group - Foo Fighters; Nickelback; Red Hot Chili Peppers; Royksopp; White Stripes.
International breakthrough artist - Norah Jones; Avril Lavigne; Nickelback; Shakira; White Stripes.
Outstanding contribution to music - Tom Jones.
Acts performing on the night include Coldplay, Sugababes, Nelly & Kelly Rowland and sk8ter britney Avril Lavigne.
DiScuss: Does anyone really care? will they just split the awards evenly between the big three companies again? How predictable is it all going to be? How come Dance and Pop (surely everything here is "pop"?) get their own catergories and not rock and irish folk?

I worked at the brit awards in 2000 as a bar person. i thought id let you know. i saw a dancer for will smith fall off a very high step and hurt himself, causing the rehersal to be delayed by loads. I had basement jaxx and ian mcculloch on my table, with chris evans on the table behind me. robbie williams won loads, he got drunk, left his mobile phone onb his table, stupid waiter handed it back in. i hate the brits. who cares. its another money spinner for tv and industry. how can you have an awards ceremony that truly covers every aspect of music fairly??-

They are spread out over all 5 major labels, all of whom equally contribute to the war chest and handily elect members to the committee to award the winners...

Nah, they got popular in early 2002, and anyway, the consideration period for awards spans 15 months, from roughly August of the previous year until November of the year just gone. So for these awards, August 2001 - November 2002. That's why David Gray's album (I think) was nominated for best album two years running.

he's COLLABORATED!! with lots of IMPORTANT artists like cerys matthews!!! therefore he's contributed to the music scene in enormous and boundless ways.

I think your being very unfair, he has contributed not just to British music but to world music in ways that no-one could ever contemplate who could forget his classic incarnatation as- oh shit this isn't a disscussion about the guy recorded the cheeky song, oh well maybe next year
