The Wildhearts - aren't they that band that's been around for ages, keep missing the big time and keep splitting up? The answer may well be "yes", but perhaps this oft-repeated question is missing the point. The real issue here is, what rock bands are there that stand out of the melée of trend-following nu-whatever that's drowning most of the talent in the music industry - who's setting the trends rather than following them? The answer, for anyone who thought that rock was meant to be a positive experience rather than an introspective whining process, could well be found in this brand new dose of melody-laden, crunchy riffage from Britain's most indestructable band.

That's the mindless hype over - so what does the record sound like? Anyone who was disappointed with 1997's sublime but intensely negative Endless, Nameless, will be pleased to know that The Wildhearts have gone back to doing what they do best - heart and soul rock & roll whose tunes make you go all funny inside and with riffs a-plenty to back them up. If you happened to hear last year's Vanilla Radio, a piece of glam rock for the 21st century that stormed into the charts to the surprise of virtually everybody in the music business, you'll know what I'm talking about here.

This may not have the complexities of some of the band's earlier releases - instead, it rushes at full pelt from the huge opening riff to the final rousing chorus without any of the quirky and often psychedelic time-changes that characterise much of their output - but it is everything that radio-friendly rock should be: heavy and rhythmic metal spliced with some killer tunes. And with a great video and high-quality B-sides to back it up - including the superbly-titled 'You Got To Get Through What You’ve Got To Go Through To Get What You Want, But You Got To Know What You Want To Get Through What You Got To Go Through', it's just possible that there'll be something remotely exciting going on in the charts this year.

What position did Vanilla Radio get to in the charts then? I thought the b-sides were disappointing so I hope these are better. I hope my local Our Price stocks it too (yeah right).

Re: The Wildhearts - Stormy In The North, Karma In The

I think it was 26 - thereabouts, anyway.

I liked the VR b-sides, and IMO the new ones are of similar quality. But I hope they don't completely abandon that dreamy psychedelic thing that their old songs did so well.

Also, it'd be great to see some more ballads. They don't seem to write many of them anymore.

Re: The Wildhearts - Stormy In The North, Karma In

26!?!?!? Holy fuck! Nice...

Downloaded the video today and bugger me if the song didn't get lodged in my head on first listen :) I love the fact Wildhearts' songs are so infectious...

As for ballads, quite a few of Ginger's solo songs have been ballady ("Blinded by Absinthe" springs to mind) so maybe he just wants to rock with the Wildhearts?

There was mention on the website of some DVDs, which will be nice, if it happens... We'll see...

Martin.

Re: The Wildhearts - Stormy In The North, Karma In

Yeah, Ginger's solo stuff has been quite country IMO. Some people hate it but I love songs like 'And This Time I'm Serious'. They're infectious but in a completely different way. It's weird, now that he's got three projects on the go, to see which songs go where. Arguably Silver Ginger 5's debut album could just as easily have been a Wildhearts record, but it looks as though for their second album they're going to get more diverse.

DVDs would be very welcome.... One of the formats of the new single is a DVD version so that should be fun.

Ginger Eclectic Prolific

As I write am treating myself to a huge slab of SILVER GINGER FIVE the ball bustin’ no holds barred side project Ginger was working on before reforming the Wildhearts, and continues to work on: “Party Girl She Fucked So Much She Screwed Herself To The Ground, With Her Tune In, Turn On, Supersonic Shake”: kind of says it all really ;-) n yup our Ginger is a country boy at heart too n who can blame him with such GIANTS as Steve Earle in his record collection (go discover dudes)

Re: The Wildhearts - Stormy In The North, Karma In The

there are tonnes of copies in Oxford Street Virgin Megastore...Top 25 would be a good result given there's a lot of other stuff competing this week.

Re: The Wildhearts - Stormy In The North, Karma In The

I think people are hoping for it to make the top 20. I agree though - loads of competition out this week, and lots of rock stuff too, so could be tough. Let's see where they are in the mid-weeks.

I've been listening to the single virtually non-stop since it came out and have not tired of it. The b-sides I hadn't heard yet are superb, better than the VR tracks IMO.

Re: The Wildhearts - Stormy In The North, Karma In

Well my local Our Price did stock it, a whole 2 copies of each format (better than the one copy of Pearl Jam's 'Riot Act' they stocked).

Martin.
