Favourite Smiths songs (and why)

by dove_from_above

I had the Very Best Of on my way home from work, and felt compelled to start a thread

I realised that quite possibly my favourite Smiths song is 'I Started Something I Couldnt Finish'. If I have this on in the car, I can't restrain myself from singing stupidly loud

Also, and somewhat predictably, 'This Charming Man'. This is because it reminds me of the time my mate Chap was hammered at about 5am and told me to put it on because "he knew all the words". He knew barely any, and it was one of the funniest three minutes of my life. When I hear it now, it always makes me smile

Thirdly (and somewhat of a cliche), is 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'. I first heard it when I was about 16, and like most 16 year olds, I thought it summed me up. I know now that this is laughable, but I still think the song is ace

Three singles, pretty obvious choices. But what are yours? Do you even like The Smiths? Are they overrated? Will Ross and Rachel ever finally get together?

This Night Has Opened My Eyes

At The Drive-In's cover turned me on to it. the groove is sassy beyond compare and the lyrics are very sad and "wrapped her up in the news of the world" is a fantastic line.

and the killers ripped off the lyric "save your life because youve only got one"

For moi

'What Difference Does It Make'. The first Smiths song I heard, when I was about 14/15. I was rooting through my uncle's box of records he used to play when he was a DJ, seeing if I recognised anything. I'd heard some of the names of some of the bands, but not the songs themselves. I picked out singles by Stone Roses, Housemartins and many more, and this Smiths single. I played it, and fell in love. I bought the best off a week later, and it all made sense.

'There Is A Light...'. The closest thing to an 'our tune' that me and Mrs B have. It's just a brilliant, brilliant song.

Sometimes the obvious choices are obvious for a reason.

Pour Me

It would have to be 'The Queen Is Dead'. Probably because it sums up The Smiths in one song. The melancholy mixed with the humour, the pure Englishness of it. The punkish element to it. Perfect.

Apparently when the Smiths boxset comes out, it will have a 13 minute version of it on.

Yep. Either that or 'London'. Or 'Stretch Out and Wait', or 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', or 'Rusholme Ruffians', or 'Handsome Devil'.

No. My mind is made up - it is definitely "Work is a Four Letter Word"

My favourites

would be:

Cemetary Gates - Solely for the lovely feel of the song. And the attack on talentless idiots.

Ask - the line about buck-toothed girls from luxembourg always reminds me of my pen pal from belgium. She's not buck toothed, mind. And I never wrote her morbid poetry.

Vicar in a Tutu,

because it's called Vicar in a Tutu.

I like Vicar in a Tutu

because my mum and dad got married in Manchester's 'Holy Name chruch'

fact

err - church*

hehe

As a cross-section of finest tracks....

I know It's Over

Paint a Vulgar Picture

Cemetary Gates

thats my two right there

I Know It's Over and Cemetary Gates

There is a light...

"Thirdly (and somewhat of a cliche), is 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'. I first heard it when I was about 16, and like most 16 year olds, I thought it summed me up. I know now that this is laughable, but I still think the song is ace"

The extent to which that sums up my relationship with that song is uncanny!

i love

'hand in glove'. because of the ridiculously good guitar riff and the line "everything depends upon how near you stand to me".

it's hard to choose though. i also love 'the queen is dead' (for the ludicrous lyrics and the RAWK of it all), 'i want the one i can't have' (for the charmingly out of tune vocals) and 'still ill' (totally perfect).

.

'rubber ring', it's awesome.

I second that

Rubber Ring is great - I love the line 'When you're lying in awe on your bedroom floor'. Loads of people just don't dig music that much and it's good to hear the feeling described so well.

can't chose

it's too hard...

OK, at the moment 'bigmouth...'

Panic

because its their only good song

Panic

Because hanging the DJ is exactly what I have in mind if he/she plays the Smiths...

Actually, I don't mind 'How soon is now?', but Morrissey just annoys me and Johnny Marr is hugely overrated as a guitarist.

either 'asleep' for the comfort that can be found in complete misery or 'nowhere fast' because the lines 'Lying in my bed and I think about life and I think about death, and neither one particularly appeals to me' summed up my out look for a long time.

Good Lord

Morrissey should ring Nine-wah-wah and go for a ride in the wahmbulance.

None more emo

Hand in Glove

or What She Said
or Never Had No-one

Quite a few

But two stand out.

'Is it really so strange?' for drinking and dancing.

'I know it's over' for weeping and moping.

mine is

The Queen Is Dead for the following reasons -

The 'Take me back to dear old blighty' intro

The opening drums

The line 'so I broke into the palace with a sponge and a rusty spanner'

Moz's voice breaking when he sings 'I didn't even know what drugs were'

I Won't Share You.

Because Morrissey sings beautifully (he can do it!) and it is very poignant.

Is that why?

You're going all the way to King's Lynn to see-see him?

Er

That was to RSPCE by the way!

T - wit

to who?

Cemetery Gates

and Suffer Little Children

because they are amusing

So many favourites

This is a really hard choice to make but
There is a Light That Never Goes Out
wins by a little
I LOVE The Smiths

have you heard

schneider tm 's cover called the light 3000, it's great.

it is pretty good

and i usually hate smiths covers.

I dont

the following ones are really good

Tatu - How soon is now
J Mascis - The boy with a thorn in his side
Cursive - Frankly mr Shankley
Xiu Xiu - Asleep
Low - Last night I dreampt somebody loved me

i like the low one

not keen on the top two, haven't heard cursive or xiu xiu.

oh in fact, wasn't that cursive one on the 'how soon is now?' compilation with million dead/ycni:m etc. i didn't like that album at all.

Ever hear the Kinesis

Boy With the Thorn in his Side? Absolutely terrible. As is the Muse cover of Please Please Please...

Ooo

and the deftones 'please,please,please...." awful

Best covers

are

Carter USM - Panic
Braid - There is a Light...
Quicksand - How Soon is Now

Smiths' covers are awful

with the exception of The Ukrainians' mini album 'Pizni Iz The Smiths'.

Definitely agree with whoever said "The Queen Is Dead"

Definitely one of the best openers of an album ever, the lyrics are spot on and still ring true today.

I would also say that as another cliche, "How Soon Is Now?" is great as well as Bigmouth Strikes Again and I Started Something I couldn't finish.

Probably Cemetary Gates, because it addresses the two most important issues in life: plagiarism and death.

The Headmaster Ritual

I was a schoolboy and it said something to me about my life

Plus - it's a killer tune

they made so many

This

Night Has Opened My Eyes is very lush and very sad. Cemetery gates is clever and funny, Moz at his best!?!

How Soon is Now

I used to hate it, but its grown intensely. Absolutely superb lyrics.

Also, its a toss up between What Difference and Bigmouth Strikes Again. Brilliant music in them, but I hate the baby voice thing on the latter!

errrm

Queen Is Dead, for reasons already listed.

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, for reasons already listed.

Cemetry Gates, for reasons already listed.

And Well I Wonder, for reasons unlisted. Them being the sort of incomplete guitar hook that Marr does. Sorta leaves you hanging on the unfinished melody of it ... dejectedly (?) Don't know how to describe it... I sound like a cunt.

Morrissey speak da troof

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I’m miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I’m miserable now

In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don’t care if I live or die ?

Barbarism Begins At Home

There is a light...
Hand in glove.

The baseline in barbarism = the sex.

Ok I like the smiths

can never decide on which of their songs I prefer - I can however tell you my favourite Morrissey song - I like you.
I love this song - it reminds me of a friend.
'I like you because your not right in the head' Fantastic line.

That Joke isn't Funny Anymore

Brilliantly emotional and definitive.

.............

'There is a light that never goes out'
Its just a fantastic pop song, and the lyrics are pretty damn good.

I've always had a soft spot

For The Boy With a Thorn In His Side

And why....

Errr, no idea. It was the first one to get stuck in my head...

The Smiths

Stop Me If You THink You've Heard This One Before, Still Ill, This Night Has Opened My Eyes or Sweet and Tender Hooligan. Man those are good songs.

My favourite

has probably always been I Know It's Over, because of that sheer sadness undercut with spite and a bit of black humour. It's closely followed by Panic because it makes me want to dance.

Bigmouth Strikes Again

for the wonderful 80s reference " and her walkman started to melt". So vitriolic and hilarious, in the same way as Shellac's Prayer to God.

Also, What Difference Does It Make, for the riff, and because my mum and dad used to dance to it, and it's nice that it's crossed the generations.

Yes, I think I've changed my mind

Bigmouth probably.

hmm

i love the smiths.

"Well I Wonder" - it's just the line "this is the final stand of all i am" and the way he sings it.

"Pretty Girls Make Graves" - it's so vivid and the bassline...

"The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" - first Smiths song i ever heard.

but overall i think
"Still Ill" because every line makes me smile intensely.

but then i also love "This Night Has Opened My Eyes"...

and "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" has my favourite actual MUSIC and it is gleefully absurd.

and sometimes i love "Accept Yourself" best for "sometimes i think about my shoes...they make me awkward and plain!"

its got to be....

This charming man, closely followed by How soon is now? and rusholme ruffians.

yes!

I love the guitars in SGABTO

So so many ...a horrible question

At the moment

oh mother i can feel the soil,

I dreamt about you last night and i feel out of bed twice

or

Please please please let me let me let me ...let me get what i want this time

stop me woo a ho stop me, stop me if you think that youve heard this one before

also love
still ill, this charming man, the death of a disco dance, william, heaven knows, nowhere fast etc etc, its like a list of disers cant leave any out, bigmouth, throw your skinny body down son, (although im not keane on cemetry gates) girl afraid, pretty girls make graves, hand in glove, the bow with the thorn in his side,

best music vid of all time is the queen is dead (derek jarman)

Bamos I'll come to wish you an unhapoy birthday

ooh

well i wonder and accept yourself as well and how soon is now

'Paint A Vulgar Picture'

Is my favourite.

Just because its the best.

Sorry I can't be bothered being more specific.

paint a vulgar picture

is my favourite - because i have never heard it. And i just love Smiths songs i've never heard.

The is a light

is the only good smiths song in my eyes. but i am quite fond of it.

Bigmouth Strikes again

laaaarrdeedooodaaaah

because it bascially sums up everything brilliant about the smiths, plus it has sentimental value for reasons which I won't go into.

Come oooooon

Is it regarding oral sex? Or continuing a strange fascination with eating large foods? Do tell...
