First good band gone in 2006...

how do you know?

huh?

they must have heard

their last ep then...

bugger

Yeah, the EP was weak but The Sophtware Slump is an all time classic for me.

ouch

that's a shame. I think I'll dig out said record now. They put on quite a good show as well.

not always

they could be great or shit !

Yes

I saw them twice and got one of each.

Good!

They have been getting worse every release since sophtware slump.

that's true actually

they've been coasting on the same sound for way too long.

.

interesting they basically split up 'cos they weren't making any money. how successful to you have to be to totally quuit the day job?

I just hope their

farewell album is half decent

Maybe if they'd wrote better songs

They would have made more money. Their last album was depressingly average. Maybe if they hadn't been trying to tailor their music to a record-buying public, their album would have been better and sold more copies. Maybe it was a self-destruct in the face of music commerce.

Maybe maybe maybe.

Yeah, I don't know many people at all who actually make a living at music. Even ones that are quite successful. There are a few though. But I always think maybe they have other schemes they just keep quiet about.

It's quite

ridiculous how many medium/large indepedent musicians have to hold down day jobs.

I think your right about Grandaddy and its such a shame. Ever since the sophtware slump (which was very good) they've been in creative freefall, attempting to hit a more mainstream audience and losing what made them so appealing in the first place.

That's a good question...

and I suspect that you have to sell a LOT more records than most people assume to be a full-time musician.

I would wager that many of your favourite bands have to work when they're not doing 'band stuff'.

It's a crime in my opinion, that musicians who are at (for example) Grandaddy's level of expertise simply cannot make a living from what they do - in my opinion, good musicians are terribly under-supported.

Grandaddy

may have make a lot more of money if V2 hadn't been obliged to pay a lot to get them...
They still never sold enough records ( even if Sophtware slum was released 3 times in France...)

It's Split Day!

Add 22-20s to the list.

Actually

I never liked 22-20's, but their farewell statement on their Myspace page makes a lot of interesting points about the nature of being in a band, and the pressures therein.

.

gorra link to that myspace?

22-20s !

How much money do they stil own their record company ?

Well...

first two albums were absolutely brilliant, everything from Sumday onwards has been rank-o. Probably run out of ideas.

thing is

they probably don't 'owe' the label anything.

i 've not

been this sad since father ted died :( i reckon sumdays alright, true, its no sophtware slump, but then what is?

22-20's = shower of sh*t.

was just trying to say

that they must have cost a lot of money with no chance now to ever repay their label.

Surely

That's the label's bad judgement rather than the band's fault - perhaps the band di exactly what they wanted to do, didn't meet the label's vision for the band and the relationship just couldn't be sustained - it's a shame that bands break up because of financial reasons that are really due to record company pressures/expectations.

success

I wonder if the Sumday direction could have carried them to "OC Indie" success. Was the release just unfortunately timed?

Thanks...

Grandaddy...

You were/are amazing.

We'll miss you.

Thanks for the great tunes.

Good luck.

Enjoy the barbeque.
