Andrew W.K. - He partied hard, he released some singles, people bought them, he went on TOTP, people watched him, he released an album... no one bought it. But that was then, this is NOW

Album #2 is currently underway in a secret NYC location, by the sounds of it a hotel, recording the follow up to 2001's 'I Get Wet'. We know because like all the other good children, we read Rolling Stone.

Anyway, as AWK says: "There could be as many as a hundred tracks on each song, all kinds of keyboards... If we were in a studio there'd be people coming in and out, and we don't want that. We want to spend as much time on the detail stuff as possible." dropping a hint he added "we can just do it in a hotel room"

'I Get Wet' might have sold nothing but some people liked it, enough for a 2nd album to obviously be thought a good idea "There are a lot of people who have discovered my music and it's changed their lives. We strive to create the best song you ever heard . . . over and over again."

He then started on about something about the album being "a growth" but really he seemed to be getting out of control by that point...

DiScuss: Should AWK actually make a 2nd album? is he just meant to be a (n)one hit wonder? will a serious new direction spoil things? did you actually buy the first album? did anyone?

I'm extremely surprised to hear that the first album didn't sell very well. It may be one-dimensional, but it's perfect party music - loud and heavy, but cheesy. Just what I love to put on before a night out. AWK was my surprise discovery of last year's Reading - I wasn't even interested in what all the fuss was about, then happened to catch a glimpse as I walked past and saw the most absurd dancing with the cheesiest of riffs and the gruffest of vocals. Kinda like Manowar-meets-Ramones-meets the Chipmunks, or something. I do wonder whether that formula could become a little tired if repeated, though, so maybe some kind of development is called for.

See, I think a more serious direction would suit him very well. He's a trained classical musician you know--and I'm not being sarcastic. He may have made a first album of silly rock&roll party music, but he's a pretty intelligent guy with a serious talent for music.
