“They’re just re-hashing the same stuff they were playing back in ’97, but back then they’d never sell out a venue this big. For some reason ska-punk, pop punk, whatever… -it’s so popular in England right now!”

Interesting thoughts from Reel Big Fish’s merchandise guy. It does seem a mystery to some of the more seasoned ska and punk enthusiasts why acts such as Less Than Jake, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and, indeed, Reel Big Fish; acts who’ve toiled hard for many years slowly working their way up venue sizes are suddenly gaining a whole new legion of fans in the last 2 years -and fans with far too much hyperactive energy than I’m sure I had at 14!

You could look to P2P file sharing or even the punk rock door that Blink 182 seem to have opened for the more inquisitive youngsters but if you ask the kids I’m sure the only thing important to them is the music and watching a band whose music can make them jump around, sing and maybe pull some tasty looking boy/girl in the pit!

Thankfully for them there’re two supports to RBF with tunes just as strong and infectious, and considering Sugarcult’s debut album hasn’t yet been released in the UK the audible chorus of youngsters down the front singing along to every song suggests a hungry yearning in the UK for as much pop punk as these kids can get hold of! And looking at the crowd pogoing along to the bouncy bubblegum punk anthem ‘Bouncing off The Walls’ it looks like the rest certainly aren’t disappointed either.

As talented singer Tim wraps his golden vocals around current single ‘Stuck In America’, the Green Day-influenced ‘Daddy’s Little Defect’ and the incredibly catchy ‘You’re The One’ the band are clearly both surprised and excited at their new-found popularity. Most definitely ones to watch in the future.

Drive Thru upstarts The Starting Line ply a strain of poppiness that’s in much the same vein as Sugarcult and pretty much all the other bands on Drive Thru but where they come up trumps is in their choruses, where the fresh-faced harmonies of 17 year old vocalist Kenny and guitarist Mike truly excel. The Astoria may be too much of a leap for the timid and, ultimately, inexperienced band but thankfully the likes of ‘Given The Chance’ and ‘Best of Me’ prove they have just enough good songs to back themselves up.

And so the evening’s main draw. Reel Big Fish. Back once again and seemingly bigger than ever. It actually becomes so packed as the crowd make their way to the front security decide to cordon off the downstairs area from any more trying to squeaze their way in. Finally, they walk onstage and, having each seemingly consumed approximately 3 litres of Red Bull they bound into a set full of dance-friendly anthems and littered with the occasional set classic just to keep the kids on their toes.

Although they seem to be running low on the kind of humorous onstage banter we’ve grown accustomed to with RBF guitarist / trumpeter Scott’s impassioned plea for everyone to join in the Anti-war demonstrations on Feb 15th does little to fan the atmosphere, getting probably the biggest cheer of the night, the band subsequently heading into a re-energised version of their cover, and rock-club regular, ‘Take On Me’.

Aside from the overly flirtatious ‘nurse’ tittering about at the back of the stage throughout their performance this was a truly enjoyable night with two talented new acts and one undeniable and enduring kingpin of the ska-punk scene. Marvellous.

  • Reel Big Fish 8 / 10
  • The Starting Line 8 / 10
  • Sugarcult 8 / 10

Reel Big Fish + The Starting Line + Sugarcult - London Astoria

It was a rather good gig, not sure about the redbull mind... all I could spy was water bottles and lots and lots of beer!

Anyway... there are some pictures here, most are from the rear of the stage so look a bit odd!

Kenny Vasoli is 18, not 17. Check your facts. That's why the label gives you a bio.

What's your beef with the Nurse?

And you didn't mention Ben from Sugarcult's props to the UK with his Union Jack speedo which he showed off proudly.

You also forgot about how Matt Wong actually moved around the stage instead of staying glued to one spot by his amp. And that Carlos got up and gave the most wonderful speech the Astoria has probably ever heard.

I am disappointed by your lack of professionalism and research. No wonder you're doing little online 'zines instead of real press.

Re: Reel Big Fish + The Starting Line + Sugarcult - London Astoria

One other thing you got wrong, is that trombone player, Dan Regan was the one asking people to attend the anti-war protest, not Scott Klopfenstein.
I should just not read the article, all of the inaccuracies and missing pieces are too much to take.

Re: Reel Big Fish + The Starting Line + Sugarcult - London Astoria

"Kenny Vasoli is 18, not 17. Check your facts. That's why the label gives you a bio."

I asked and was told by the 'nurse' that he was 17 and no, we don't receive promos from Drive Thru.

"What's your beef with the Nurse?"

She's not in the band. She'd like to be. And she distracted me from what I went to see by sitting on the drum riser.

"And you didn't mention Ben from Sugarcult's props to the UK with his Union Jack speedo which he showed off proudly."

This really needed mentioning because?

"You also forgot about how Matt Wong actually moved around the stage instead of staying glued to one spot by his amp."

I'm sorry if I missed it, but I'm pretty sure he did stay glued to one spot, not that there's anything wrong with that. Maybe you caught the other show?

"And that Carlos got up and gave the most wonderful speech the Astoria has probably ever heard."

Speech?

"I am disappointed by your lack of professionalism and research. No wonder you're doing little online 'zines instead of real press."

Sorry Miss. I guess I'll have to try better next time, eh? For the record though, journalism is not my full time job and neither do I intend to make it my job; I prefer to write for small zines (though you can hardly call DiS a small zine) and thirdly how do you define 'real' press? Maybe if we were all paid for our work, that we receive 'payment' from labels and pr in exchange for features and favourable reviews, maybe that would make us 'real press'. You think?

Re: Reel Big Fish + The Starting Line + Sugarcult - London Astoria

I don't know about the rest of the messages in this post but here is my two cents:
I never told you Kenny was 17, I told you he was my age. 18.
I don't WANT to be in Reel Big Fish, one night I was drunk and dared in LA--so I did it. I don't know how I could of distracted you because I played such a minimal part in the evening. It's not my fault if you watched me instead of the band.

Re: Reel Big Fish + The Starting Line + Sugarcult - London Astoria

ok, well the age thing is my mistake then. Please see my email regarding the rest.

Re: Reel Big Fish + The Starting Line + Sugarcult - London Astoria
