Seltzer: To be honest, I really liked ABPK. It was the sort of band that you close your eyes and nod your head up and down to. Just these abrasive, hypnotic slashing rythmns.

Frank: I'm finding it harder to get revved up over bands that, admittedly make all the right noises, but essentially leave me wanting in the song department. I left not remembering a single tune.

Yeah, I know there's a lot of them about, and I don't fall over in excitement at all bands that go vram! vram! skreee!, but they had a certain intensity and groove. When you talk about tunes, I guess you mean hooks. And I understand that, but if they had hooks they'd be Hundred Reasons. Good god. And they looked cool, they looked like a band, which is rare. And nice.

F: I think you hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of those bands about at the moment but I don't think that ABPK manage to sufficiently raise themselves above the glut. Yeah, they certainly look great but they were a bit lifeless. Not one shenanigan. And they pouted far too much.

S:It aint going to change anyone's world, unless that is your world, and it is for a lot of people. I guess its a case of 'recommended if you like extreme post-hardcore Fugazi-style bands playing extended brain-slicing songs'. Which I do. And personally, I think they DO stand above the bands of their ilk.

F: OK, my closing statement is "ABPK - Nice Hair!!" Onto Lomax. Now these guys did make me feel that my brain had been sliced. They were loud with a capital LOUD. There are two bands that I always regret forgetting my earplugs for; Lomax and Winnebago Deal. Not only was it loud, but the guitar was so piercing it felt like my ears were being dragged across a carpark. Good tunes though.

S: But to me, Lomax suffer from Shoreditch syndrome - cool hair, cool clothes, suitably noisy and arch, but all a little bit bleugh. I didn't detect a great deal of tunes personally; it was NY Clash art punk noiseniks. At least something like ABPK is truthful.

F: Ahh haaaa, the old real/fake debate. Lomax do sound like a NY funky/punky thing, but they have a great tune in first single 'Anglicised'. The rest of the set admittedly does bleed together after a while, but they are energetic enough to keep me interested. Last nights show was a vast improvement on when I first saw them at the Buffalo Bar just post-Christmas.

S: Can I criticise a band for being on 93 Feet Records? Yes, I can. They may as well call it 'We Used To Like Breakbeats But Its All Guitars Round Here Now, Records'. And that kinda sums it all up. Oh well. Not bad, but never going to find a place in my heart.

AtomBombPocketKnife + Lomax - London Aldgate East Arts Centre

Interesting that that venue has started a label. Can the writers of that article inform of the breakbeat releases they mention, as I'd like to check them out.
