Artists: Johnny Cash

Walk The Line, the new biopic of the early career of Johnny Cash, has earned itself five Oscar nominations for the forthcoming 78th Annual Academy Awards.

The much-hyped Brokeback Mountain, directed by Ang Lee, earned itself the most nominations with eight, including Best Picture. Walk The Line missed out on the top category, despite taking over $100 million so far in the US, along with Peter Jackson's King Kong. Joaquin Phoenix, who plays Cash in the movie, is up for Best Actor, and his opposite lady, Reece Witherspoon as June Carter, is in the running for Best Actress.

Of course, the movie overlooks a great many details in its account of Cash's career 'til his 1968 Folsome Prison gig (not least of all that he played at a number of other prisons prior to Folsome), but has nevertheless been acclaimed by everyone from the broadsheets to the BBC's Jonathan Ross.

The Oscars take place on March 5th.

undecided

not sure if i wanna see this film or not...

brokeback mountain was pretty cool.

I

have seen the film and its not all that great, a bit sentimental really. seems really rushed as well, in a barely scratches the surface kind of way.

I dunno

I really enjoyed it. Phoenix and Witherspoon certainly deserve top marks for their singing which - while not entirely faithful to the originals - was certainly listenable in its own right.

In fact, one of the friends I went to see it with confessed to preferring the film version of 'Jackson' to the original.

It did seem to cram a lot into a short time frame, and it only covered part of Cash's career, but as a movie it was entertaining and it will hopefully act as a springboard to get more people into the music.

That's one of

my favourite 'rock portraits' ever up there.

I've seen it as well

I personaly think it's a good film, even if it is not entirely true. I think Joaquin Pheanix is greate

i was talkin'

'bout the photograph...

The film's pretty good...

Joaquin Phoenix is excellent. It does do a lot of the biopic cliches but still worth a go if you like Cash's music...

hmm

That Johnny Cash film is the most shameless Oscar-bait in cinemas at the moment. And I mean that in a bad way.
