Amid rumbles that the band are about to begin recording the follow-up to 'Morning View' the Take on Me video copyists, bring up ye olde 7 year entertainer law to try and leave the grasp of Sony.Inc..

According to antiMUSIC.com surf-sk8-rock-pop-with-a-dj-stars Incubus, have filed a lawsuit to the Los Angeles Superior Court against their label, Epic Records - part of the Sony Corporation - who they still contractually owe another four albums.

They're bringing up a California labour law which states, as entertainers, they cannot be locked into a "contract for over seven years, provided they meet certain requirement". And as luck would have it, they're soon to hit that seven-year anniversary.

Basically the band are throwing their toys out of the pram after not getting enough money back from their international success.

Their manager, Steve Renniehas had this to say:
"Under current standard industry practices, Sony Music has been handsomely rewarded financially during this period while the members of Incubus have received very little compensation from their creative and professional efforts...we're entitled to share fairly in the fruits of their labor going forward."

And some suit at Sony had this to say back:
"We have the highest regard for Incubus and their music and take great pride in the work we have done together to build a worldwide audience for them. Incubus is signed to an exclusive recording contract with Sony Music."

DiScuss: Will this all end in a mess with the band splitting up and/or never working in the music biz again? Do the band have enough cash to take megacorp to court properly? When will bands learn that record labels give you a big advance purely from to recoup all that money back and then some, and that they're not really your friends, especially them at big faceless corporations!

Everyone in a band should read this: http://www.arancidamoeba.com/mrr/problemwithmusic.html

Albini maybe a tad fatalistic as usual but still I would say he's pretty much spot-on.

Re: Incubus: Sues The Man!

Yes, steve albini on the money as usual, even if he did ruin Rid of Me. It's just a shame no-one can sue incubus for pretending they might be a decent Faith No More rip-off band, and then going soft rock wank.
