ANTIHERO
Antihero sprung to err.. fame when their self financed and released CD single 'MTV' was picked up by Radio One DJs John Peel and Steve Lamacq, since then they've released several singles on Integrity Records, the latest being 'Stravinsky Gave me Nightmares'. They've gained a huge amount of press, including a mention in a NME feature alongside the likes of Ikara Colt, The Cooper Temple Clause, Hoggboy and labelmates Miss Black America.
Their sound is punked-up lollipop rock with a hint of a hip-hop R&B influence. It owes as much to each member's very diverse tastes as it does to American influences like Everclear, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Pixies, Nirvana and, closer to home, the likes of The Beatles and Blur.
"Emotional but furious guitar-toting tykes." Time Out
"Heroic. What more could you want?" John Peel
"My favourite buzzband right now. We'll be hearing a lot more from them." Steve Lamacq
THE CRIMEA
The Crimea, formed from the ashes of Welsh punksters The Crocketts, released their debut single 'Lottery Winners On Acid' last year through the Shiny Beast label. Since then they've picked up numerous plays on Steve Lamacq, John Peel and Xfm, plus received rave reviews from many sections of the press including Kerrang, NME, The Fly, etc. Lead by Davey McManus, they bastardise folk rock and write songs no one's ever nearly written before.
"The music veers from the perfect hooks of Elvis Costello and The Pixies, to the rawness of Neil Young." Kerrang
"You can see the Crimea now - scuffling along Camden backstreets, behoilsting a drunken Flaming Lips and spouting to a young Bowie." The Fly
CHEERLEADER
London foursome Cheerleader formed in 2001, the two founding members Jodi Devine and Mel Ainsworth met in London as extras on a porn movie set, they stole a drummer Andy Chinneck, after seeing him play at some dodgy biker funeral in Wales and recruited another member - Wiggy - a reject from The Guitar Institute in London. This fabulous disaster releases their debut single 'Hair-Out' on 24th March 2003. As yet they've not picked up much press, but they've had 'Single Of The Week' on Diamond Dave's TotalRock show.
"We have been waiting for a band to fill the void left by Twist, this could well be it!" Drowned in Sound
THE BROKEN FAMILY BAND
The Broken Family Band hail from Cambridge and are culled from various indie bands, Hofman, Too Many Zeros, Dr Xadrez, Gwei-lo, Hairdresser and Skinrush. Much loved by John Peel, they combined all their influences to produce a unique sound that is at once bluegrass, punk, drone rock and luscious psychedelia. They've previously supported The Frames, Goldrush and The Mountain Goats plus more recently The Thrills at a Xfm X-posure night.
"There's a hint of Will Oldham, but the songs on this mini-album reference more mainstream (and less country) fare as well. The Perfect Gentleman manages to hint at the Stones, the Pixies, Weezer and Grandaddy." The Sunday Times
"More tumbleweed ballads from the cactus strewn streets of Cambridge. British alt. country Anglicana, if you will is a rum old thing, but when the only way is down you can't beat it." NME
In addition to that, there will be a mini CD sale (well, me with a table and a clear out of my back catalouge) as well as the privelige of meeting me and James Moore. What more could you ask for???
Dis Colchester: Line Up Confirmed
however, there are a number of frankly shocking typos in that story.
I love the Broken Family Band...

KaitO + Querelle + Jet Johnson @ The Windmill
Do Something Pretty Fanzine
presents...
KAITO + QUERELLE + JET JOHNSON
Wednesday 23rd April
8pm - late
The Windmill
22 Blenheim Gardens
Brixton, SW2

Admission: £3
KAITO U.K - This Norwich quartet Kaito U.K continue to bring fresh energy to
an under-represented genre. Catchy in the best sense of 'pop' then busting
the melodies to shreds with impeccable noise. Amidst the mayhem, however,
they never lose the rare sense of tunefulness, beating down the noise for
noise sake crowd.
"'Catnap' is not only a huge and hummable terrace chant rant, it truly rocks
like it wants to torch your record collection and have sex with your dog.
This is guitar music as it should be played by lusty young things with scant
regard for animal welfare." NME
"Kaito plays connect the dots with crunchy Sonic Youth noise pop and the
wigged-out jive of a hopped-up Beta Band." Insound
QUERELLE - Querelle have been creating somewhat of a reputation with their
live shows, holding their own with the likes of Life Without Buildings, NPB,
Reynolds, Degrassi and The Dudley Corporation. The Italian trio have an
incredible stage presence and leave newcomers shell-shocked with their
explosive post punk, a cross between The Lapse, Blonde Redhead and Unwound.
The band has recently been approached by three well-known indie labels and
should release their debut single sometime soon.
"As the aching guitar and thundering drums crash into a cacophonous finale,
I realise that I never want to be without Querelle again. I want to rush out
and buy their records. The only problem is that they haven't even made any
yet." Bleedmusic
"Loud, abrasive, infectious artrockers Querelle boast a scruffy, amazingly
energetic sound." Strange Fruit
JET JOHNSON - Gavin Baker (Billy Mahonie/Glider/Meets Guitar), Caroline
Nesbø (Peachfuzz), and Kevin Smith (Reynolds) get together to play peculiar
post-pop. Since forming in 2000, the band have released material on several
indie labels, the latest being their mini album 'Tula' for Errol Records,
which picked up rave reviews and airplay.
"Jet Johnson sound like a storybook, with clever banjo-plucking and Caroline
Nesbo's delicate vocals giving '9000 Men' a dreamlike quality, while the
plaintive strain of 'That's How It Goes' is a fairytale squeezed into
musical form." The Fly
"Acts like Empress, Low and Piano Magic come to mind." Substance
