i saw mew at academy 2 in manchester last night. really enjoyed it - songs from the new album sounded quite heavy, a nice contrast to the softer stuff of old.
the visuals on the bigh screen were interesting. lots of weird little girl/puppet/beardy-face things singing along with the songs. kind of looked like a chris cunningham interpretation of a borthers grimm fairy tale.
anyone else seen them on this tour? opinions?
learn to fucking spell
Yeah
I was there last night, I saw them a few years ago but I'd forgotten how good they are live
did you see
that aggro-boy shove a crowd surfer during 'comforting sounds'? weird.
Mmmmm
Mew's latest is fast becoming one of my all time favourites. Saw them at the Fleece here in Bristol last year, they were extremely good.
Nah
I was kinda in the middle, couldn't really see anything apart from the back of the guy in front of me's head. There were quite a few people going crazy by me though, it was quite strange.
haha
my friend was complaining afterwards that it was probably the largest crowd of freakishly tall people he'd ever seen.
I'd lurve to see them live !
I wanna see them live, i had the chance to go last time they went to BHam but none of me mates would go :'(
I'm supposed to be seeing them live
in Reading soon. Is it actually that good? I haven't been able to fully get into mew, no idea why
personally i'm looking forward to my luminaries, the sandcreek massacre and broken jack tonight
Saw them at shepherd's bush
I thought they were great, after a slow start..."White Lips Kissed" and old song "Saliva" (jonas accompanying himself on piano after the rest of the band had left the stage) seemed to kill the mood momentarily...however the crowd seemed to rejoice at the quiet-heavy bits in old frengers songs...You can somehow tell Mew aren't trained in their art (they could've done a bit more with opener "special" and "156")and that they are just lucky wannabes but they have great tunes and need to be picked up by a bigger uk audience...
Does anyone know if Jonas really sings (or mimes/digitally aids his voice) when playing live?
I
don't understand what you mean about them being "lucky wannabes". they seem a hell of a lot cleverer than most pop bands, and their set contained all the crowd pleasers you'd expect.
Teenheat...
what i meant is that when they started out they could barely play their instruments well and they were booed off stage on their first gig (when they were called orange dog...thats not a good name is it?)...the album tracks off their denmark only albums (that didnt make it to frengers...which was effectively a best of) aren't that great either (listen to "im a tsin tsi for you, and "king christian" amongst others)...however i love frengers and and the glass handed kites (although some of the melodies on the latter are a little sluggish, it is one of the albums of 2005)...Im a huge mew fan, and meant it not as a put down...GO DENMARK!!!
um..
bands grow and mature?
Yes...
but at the same time, they're not a band that have struggled to make music since they were born...i guess theyre like Coldplay, though, of course, a lot better...
this really confuses me
do people really think that tracks like Wherever, Tsin-Tsi and Wheels over me are 'bad'?
Orange Dog? this intrigues me...

backing trackssss...
Saw Mew in Reading last night. Loved it Loved it. First time i've been at a gig for ages, and shut my eyes and been transported.
Would be really interested to have a listen to the track they're playing too, to see how much is on it... vocals and big noises wise.
Really great tho. Totally enjoyable.
Jessima xx
my impression was
it was some of the synth washes and stuff, but all the guitar and bass parts were definitely live and if the vocals were on backing tape then he's very good at lip-syncing.
Oddly, I don't actually enjoy Mew that much on CD but live they were great fun.
i think some backing vocals were tracked
especially at the end of 'zookeeper's boy'. but that's fair enough.
possibly some of the synths, but the guy with the glasses on the keys at the back was pretty loud in the mix so maybe that was just him and his POWER.
Yeah
there was definitely something going on at the end of Zookeepers boy...and yes the synth seemed to play itself at some points...weird guy with the glasses and hair, that is blatantly why they chose him to be in the band...
