I always dreamt of being a columnist for Maximumrocknroll. Some of you guys might be the same.
Anyway, I've always felt that MRR has been held back by its (admirable) refusal to cover any type of music other than three-chord, two-minute punk. That's my least favourite style of punk, and yet I still buy MRR for its columns.
I believe that a print zine with columns as great as MRRs, which covers a diverse range of indie and alternative music and is generally less obviously associated with old-skool punk, could be a real success.
For ages, I've wanted to try and put out something like that. But there were too many problems: for instance, where to find great columnists, how to organize distribution etc.
But I have just recently found some terrific column writers in the US who are willing to write and distribute. I am hoping that amongst the DiS community there might be some UK-based writers who can do the same. Ideally, I'm looking for people who can do the following:
1. Write a quarterly column (this might become monthly, depending on how successful the zine becomes). The column doesn't have to cover music, but should appeal to people who listen to alternative music. Personal columns are great, but sorry folks - no fiction. Go out and buy a copy of MRR to see how they do it.
2. Be prepared to review other zines, books, gigs and records. I envision a zine half filled with columns, half filled with reviews. Of course, if all goes to plan, I hope we will start to receive stuff to review from bands and small record labels - which means free stuff for us!
3. Be prepared to distribute the zine in your local area. This will probably involve taking copies down to your local indie shop on a sale-or-return basis. Or perhaps selling copies at gigs - which means cash in hand!
Needless to say, other than the cash you might make selling the zine in your area, I can't pay people. But, of course, you'll have the space in your column to plug whatever the hell you want.
If anybody is interested, then email a sample column to:

And put 'Zine' in the subject line so I know it isn't spam. Cheers.
