Creem Magazine: Rockin' Return!

Have we entered a time warp? Or is it a sign o'times that infamous, groundbreaking, magazine Creem is set to return..?

DiS can reveal that seminal American rock rag, once edited by Lester Bangs and contributed to by Cameron Crowe, Creem, is soon to be back!

Totally by accident we stumbled across creemmagazine.com where new and classic samples sit side by side. A message there reads "Lock the doors, hide your children, we're back! We're back to show kids around the world it's OK again to pick up guitars and make some fucking noise"

We obviously didn't believe it. So we got in touch with the peeps behind the mag who said:
"Yes, indeedie CREEM be hitting the streets again soon. We really just wanted to throw a couple things up there on the website to mark our turf. We have been busy going thru the boxes in Boy Howdy's basement looking for the archives, now it's time to find the new recruits and get on with it. Keep an eye on the dot com and we'll let you know what's going on."

Sounds good to us. Long live rock crit!

DiScuss: How do you feel about this? Is this extreme back in the dayness, hardcore 70s retroism, nostalgia raping? How many established mags will this kill? (I can think of one in particular we'd be better off without) Will this be better than the likes of Careless Talk and new monthly BANG?

Creem: Rock'n'Retro Hackshun!

Retro-fetishism is EVIL. Nostalgia is SHIT. Revivals of this nature should be discouraged. I can remember CREEM as it stumbled sorrily into the 80s, and was happy when they mercifully put the shotgun to its head.

It'll end in tears. The only thing it will kill is yer starry eyed idealism. Hey, maybe that's a good thing...

Re: Creem: Rock'n'Retro Hackshun!

by "yer" were yer refering to me? i aint stary eyed.. don't be confused by the dark space behind me pupils.

maybe you were generalising at the whole world?

Re: Creem: Rock'n'Retro Hackshun!

Sorry, ILX slang.

You or Your = personal pronoun

Yer or Yr = abstract generalised form of address.

Re: Creem: Rock'n'Retro Hackshun!

Quite right retro=evil. It's a fuck of a lot harder to balance on the cutting edge than to fester around in the past.
Sack Trick (who I sometimes play in) supported the Damned a few years ago, and the audience was full of OLD punks, replendent with OLD jackets covered with patches of OLD bands, and it made us think that there could be NO MORE CONSERVATIVE an audience than the one which clung so tightly to the past (and then we got scared cos we believed we were about to get bottled off stage).
It would be great if there were a whole lot of bands reacting against PROPER shit like the impending war (like the 60's people reacted against Vietnam), but fact is retro bands worry a fuck of a lot more bothered about where they left their kohl pencil. Embrace the bullshit of the past, but not the ideals.

Re: Creem: Rock'n'Retro Hackshun!

Wahey! The audience was like that when I saw the Damned a few years ago in Aberdeen.
And Sensible sang 'Happy Talk'!

Re: Creem: Rock'n'Retro Hackshun!

i've never been to a Damned gig properly, but the only time i went to a venue when they were playing, there was a guy who had pretty much had his finger severed after the venue owner tried to chuck him out! and that was before i even got inside the venue (where the floor had been replaced by several hundred thousand beer cans)...

sorry, just thought I'd share that...

Re: Creem: Rock'n'Retro Hackshun!

Where does it say they're planning to cling onto the past? I'm not familiar with Creem Magazine but as far as I know Mr Lester Bangs was a pretty passionate guy - surely if the operations of 70s-era Creem were applied to today's re-launched publication that would be a good thing.

Re: Creem: Rock'n'Retro Hackshun!

Well, the way i read the site they'd be putting in some "classic cuts" with blasts from the past... but yeah, it's not gonna be THAT retro, but probably covering bands now, who sound like bands back then (i'd guess.. Dirtbombs, Detroit Cobra's White Stripes, etc..)

Re: Creem: Rock'n'Retro Hackshun!

sorta agree but if the writing's good then this can only be a good thing can't it? Too many mags are scribbled without any sense of style nowadays.
