It's a bit quiet tonight as the small crowd, still shell shocked by some horrific Toploader sound-alikes, bring themselves towards the stage as 50hz launch into their set. Part Muse, part Mansun, with a singer who invokes the spirit of Brett Anderson '96 this four piece appear to have all the moves and all the tunes.
Launching themselves with new single, 'In The Town', the infectiously repetitive melody blends disco dynamics with well studied guitar rock. Later they will play b-side, 'Half The Nation', showcasing their more traditional side, all chiming guitar melodies and soaring vocals. The rest of the set regularly swings from one side to the other. It's not just the tunes that are strong though, the way the front man tenses and twists his skinny indieboy frame to every pang of emotion suggests that even if the rest of the band are only feeling the vibe a little he's living every lyric.
Crowd reaction is good, a couple of student photographers fill their memory sticks and, more shockingly, a few people even dance. Between-song banter is limited to dedicating a song to Tony Blair and announcing song titles. Nothing more is required though, tonight the music did the talking.
