....In days of old when knights were bold there was a show called Rapido, hosted
by Eurotrashmeister Antoine de Caunes, a former music journo.....In days of old
when knights were bold we were allowed to hear about Manu Negra, Les
Negresses Vertes, Young Gods and other top continental bands that get
ignored in the UK. Alas no more Rapido, and so the UK is oblivious to Saiian
Supa Crew, though they are huge in France....and yet this is some of the most
mindblowing rap I've ever heard.Saiian Supa Crew replace the DJ with three guys
doing human beatbox, but if you listened you wouldn't realise....it sounds SO good.
I think the boys in the US are still to catch up with virtuoso rappers who can
each make human beatbox sound like Grandmaster Flash jamming, scratching beats and
sounds and samples....but it's all in one guys mouth....and just when you've picked your jaw up off of
the floor.... he passes the mic and one of his compadrés takes over doing
the same thing but with different samples, different beats and different
scratches.....but I guess I'm no afficionado... Deedar from ADF is standing
to the left of me, and he reckons that Chicago outfit The Roots are possibly
in the same league... and I've HEARD of them... but even so,why is it that
the simple matter of language procludes us from listening to the rhythm and
spirit of FRENCH ghettos???This was the opening band on at the main stage of
this festival, and the ENTIRE crowd was dancing, punching the air and
singing as ONE.
With so much pulp like Will Smith and Puffy in the mainstream it's easy
to forget that people are STILL pushing the boundaries of rap, and I guess
even easier to forget when those artists don't do it in english....
More's the shame....
The Truth IS out there.......
