Hi there, I'm wondering how people feel about music from abroad (I'm talking non-American and non-British). Are you interested in it? Do you know much about bands/artists/acts from abroad? Why do you think we don't know much about them? What do you guys reckon would be the best way to promote these acts, website? Magazine?

Access is the key
Most abroad bands that i like i came accross through MysSpace. The net being a leveller of sorts not having to reley on the big distribution networks etc. My favourite bands from abroad tend to be from either Italy or Germany. Projekt 2501 are from Germany i think but live in America so dont know if that counts?
I think that the most popular/common exposure is for German Goth/Industrial/Darkwave bands.
My Bandmate nominates...
Front 242, Belgium
I really like
dEUS (belgium)
Internatioanl Noise Conspiracy (Sweden)
Panico (Mexico)
Broken Social Scene (Canada)
DFA1979 (Canada)
Turn (Ireland)
this list could go on and on....
I would have thought
the most popular german export would be electronic/techno stuff ala Kompakt, Playhouse, Tresor, etc.
i only really know the obvious ones
bjork, sigur ros, sepultura etc
it would be nice to hear more different music though
actually does anyone
have any recommendations for good hip hop acts outside of the UK and US?
french hip-hop?
there's load of that. TTC are good.
MC Solar...
for a start.
I like some hip hop in French as it's a very smooth language and flows really well.
accidental...
try Bumblebeez (or Bumblebeez 81 as they are know in America) they mix hip hop and rock really well.
They are from Australia.
i LOVE bumblebeez!
i don't understand why they're not bigger than they are.
also there are loads of great
Australian bands....
Love of Diagrams

oh yeah
i've heard good things about them. tried to catch them playing cargo last year (?) but didn't quite make it. i'll check them out.
i do have some french hip hop but i haven't heard of ttc so i will investigate. it would be nice to listen to some brazilian hip hop but i don't know where to start.
By the power...
of Myspace I've found some decent Spanish bands.
And we all know how good some music from Japan is.
which spanish bands?
spanish music is good fun.
they seem to really like their ska over there.
Check out my myspace page friends bit...
They must also like their Devo over there.
This is kool, ja?
If you're into your electronica then you've probably already discovered the überlegend that is Ulrich Schnauss, from German imprint City Centre Offices.

There's ain't a duff number on the whole CCO catalogue really. New album by Miwon is the most fun since Ghost Castle.

THE FRAMES
I
really don't like Bell X1. They're like a shit Belle and Seb. But in a blender, watered down with boring juice.
SHIT
Apart from a couple. Sigur Ros are alright and the Shout Out Louds. The rest are shit.
However, a bit of Japenese Jazz Funk House doesn't go amiss every Tuesday after SARCASTIC CLUB.
Cheers guys
Thanks for the input guys, that's great. Anyone else have an opinion? I take it everyone thinks web is the best option for promoting foreign music?
without a
doubt. also the cheapest.
some really good japanese bands
like Polysics and Electric Eel Shock.
well
for my money, some decent norwegian bands:
Mean+Flower
MEAN+FLOWER (We're really ace. First EP in June)
Syracus. They rock.
Seigmen, if you're into heavier stuff
low frequency in stereo
monomen
beezewax
serena maneesh (I suppose)
the samuel jackson 5
kaizers orchestra
surferosa
rockettothesky
youth pictures of florence henderson
MEAN+FLOWER (plug)
web
is the best for promoting almost anything these days. especially anything that people need to have a bit of disposable income for, like gig tickets and albums etc...
EFTERKLANG
are Danish and almost as good as bacon.
www.efterklang.net
Jaga Jazzist and The Radio Dept are pretty great too.
