You’d be forgiven for thinking that Placebo had fallen off the face of the Earth post-‘Special K’, but now they’re well and truly back with ‘The Bitter End’ charting at number 11 in the UK charts.
‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ will either be loved or hated by devout Placebo fans, with more electronic influences throughout and appearing less approachable on the first listen. However, as with most bands who come back after a lay-off of a year or more, it takes a while to realise that Placebo haven’t lost it – they’ve just shifted direction almost imperceptibly. The album kicks off with ‘Bulletproof Cupid’, a heavily charged instrumental track that hits you like a bag full of bricks being dropped off a high-rise building. This song puts everyone at ease and lets them know that Placebo can still rock out as much as any other band, and with that aside it’s on to the real fun. ‘English Summer Rain’ is up next, and opens up with a drum track that sounds like it was recorded in a kitchen and played on pots and pans. Molko’s vocals are soft and pleading against the echoing keyboards and there’s an underlying malevolence that is reminiscent of the more obviously jarring moments on ‘Without You I’m Nothing’. The whole album has a very atmospheric feel, with each song set to a backdrop of confused thoughts and emotions – typified best in the album’s title track ‘Sleeping With Ghosts’.
‘The Bitter End’, the first single to be taken from the album, best showcases the melding of old and new Placebo; classic throbbing guitars based over the dry crack of the drums and with the new layered synths. It gives the whole song (and album) a more satisfying depth and involvement for the listener, with no stone left unturned in the search for perfect expression through music.
The album swings from disturbing and dark (‘Something Rotten’) to life affirming and positive (‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ and ‘I’ll Be Yours’) through good old rock and everything in between. It’s this eclectic aspect both musically and emotionally that makes it one of the most complete Placebo albums to date, and while it may take some time to get used to, it’d be impossible to say Placebo weren’t moving forward.
‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ may take more than one listen to truly shine, but with just a little perseverance you’ll be rewarded with a truly awesome album that will morph and grow to fit whatever the listener is lacking. In a world filled with records where generalization is the key to mass marketing, Placebo still manage to appeal to everyone through strongly personal material.

You didn't mention Special Needs though, one of the best Placebo tracks ever.

I don't consider myself to be a "true fan" (I thought that was reserved for Manics acolytes), but I've been listening to Placebo since the first album. I'm not so sycophantic that I worship everything Brian Molko farts out.
Oh, and if you could spot the tune in Plasticine, please show me where it is cause I think it was hiding on my copy of the album.

I'll forgive the awful grammar as English isn't your primary language, I'll also forgive the baffling insults for a moment.
I bought the Placebo albums because of the music, pure and simple. I believe that currently the music is not as good, and so I expressed what is known as an "opinion".
Now, it seems die-hard obsessive fans like yourself have persistent trouble with interpreting opinions properly, and have to get all defensive. People like you put off potential new fans by acting in this way.
I accept that you like the album, and that's your personal choice. Accept that I dislike Plasticine and English Summer Rain because I judge them against far better songs from previous Placebo albums.
As for wanking off over Placebo videos, if I was going to secretly lust after a cross-dressing midget, I would at least someone a bit less ugly.

Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts
Ok well....i haven't been a Placebo fan ever since their first album cos, well one, i was 6 and two, i just hadn't heard their songs up until recently because of my friends.
Within the last 4 months i have fallen in love with them and their songs and lyrics because it just makes me feel so much better, better mood, better about myself.
Their songs go on about being yourself and not being afraid of who you are and it makes me feel so much happier to listen to these people, one straight, one bi and one gay {someone said confused about their sexual orientation...er...hello? they KNOW they're straight/gay/bi}.
Ok and all those people that think placebo are terrible, that's fine, that's great, i mean i fucking hate girls aloud and think they're shit but not everyone would agree, but please, even if you do hate placebo with a fiery passion, don't take it too far cos people get angry

well i'm throwing my opinion in aswell, i hate it when people go on non-stop about being "the greatest fan" of something just because they force themselves to like everything. Real fans are willing to listen objectively, how do you know if somethings good if you're completely biased? i've listened to placebo since without you i'm nothing, and i admit that the album is totally self-indulgent, but i bought it at a time when i needed to be self-indulgent, and i'll always stick it on when i feel like having a good old tantrum, its brilliant. as for sleeping with ghosts, its not as sensitive, but theres no denying that its well refined and fans of earlier albums are just going to have to accept that they're moving on. i will say, however, that i was disappointed with them at leeds festival, i was really looking forward to them but it seemed like they couldn't be bothered.
